  • The frost penetration depth of pavement is usually estimated from the freezing index that made temperature data analysis of 30 years and decided the thickness of anti-frost layer. The field monitoring region in study was divided into five regions by freezing index 550~650$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, 450~550$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day and 350~450$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day. Each region has three-section of road pavement such as cutting area, boundary area of cutting and banking, and lower area of banking. The field monitoring system was established both in the section of anti-frost layer and in the section without anti-frost layer. The data analysis was conducted for determination of frost penetration depth within the paved road by the field monitoring system. The result showed that The temperature of subgrade without anti-frost layer shows below zero in centigrade for the region of freezing index 550~650$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, up and down around zero degree in subgrade for the region of freezing index 450~550$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, and there is no place existed below zero degree in subgrade for the region of freezing index below 450$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day. With comparison of field frost penetration depth for the cross-sections of pavement, the cutting area shows the greatest frost penetration depth, and less influence of frost penetration depth for the boundary area of cutting and banking, and the least influenced for the lower area of banking.

  • Recently, freezing index of frost penetration depth estimation used in Korea is applied according to the standard, published by MOLIT in 2003. However, it is difficult to consider can not be determined to standard reflects weather conditions in accordance with the current climate warming or abnormally high temperature. Also the temperature should be considered local variables because heavy local gap. Therefore, this study is through the freezing index presented in MOLIT's code by calculating the frost penetration depth determining whether the adequacy and conducted a study to apply in the field. As a result, when the Elevation 100m to standard in Incheon frost penetration depth is found to be 50.8cm.

  • The use of shield TBM is gradually increasing due to the urbanization of social infrastructures. Reliable estimation of advance rate is very important for accurate construction period and cost. For this purpose, it is required to develop the prediction model of advance rate that can consider the ground properties reasonably. Based on the database collected from field, statistical prediction procedure for field penetration index (FPI) was modularized in this study to calculate penetration rate of shield TBM. As output parameter, FPI was selected and various systems were included in this module such as, procedure of eliminating abnormal dataset, preprocessing of dataset and ridge regression with best subset selection. And it was finally validated by using field dataset.

  • Experimental ballast track and concrete track were installed on the railway site and the frost penetration depth and the frost heave amount in the winter were measured. As a result, when the freezing index was the same, the frost penetration depth of concrete track was deeper than that of ballast track. Furthermore, when an XPS and polyethylene aggregate layer was installed below the ballast track, the frost penetration depth of the ballast track decreased significantly; in the case of the concrete track, the frost penetration depth decreased when the thickness of the subbase increased. Meanwhile, the frost heave amount also decreased when an XPS and polyethylene aggregate layer was installed below the ballast track ; in the case of the concrete track, the frost heave amount decreased when the thickness of the subbase increased.

  • Generally, the plate load test and the field density test are conducted for compaction quality control in earthwork, and then additional analysis. Recently developed that the DCPT (Dynamic Cone Penetration Test) equipment for smart compaction quality control its the system are able to get location and real-time information about worker history management. The IoT-based the DCPT system improved the time-cost in the field compared traditional test, and the functions recording and storage of the DPI (Dynamic Cone Penetration Index) were automated. This paper describes using these DCPT equipment on in-situ and compared to the standards of the DCPT, and the compaction trend had be confirmed with DPI as the field test data. As a result, the DPI of the final compaction decreased by 1.4 times compared to the initial compaction, confirming the increase in the compaction strength of the subgrade compaction layer 10 to 14 cm deep from the surface. A trend of increasing compaction strength was observed. This showed a tendency to increase the compaction strength of the target DPI proposed by MnDOT and the results of the existing plate load test, but there was a difference in the increase rate. Therefore, additional studies are needed on domestic compaction materials and laboratory conditions for target DPI and correlation studies with the plate load tests. If this is reflected, it is suggested that DCPT will be widely used as smart construction equipment in earthworks.

  • Changes in substructure conditions, such as ballast fouling and subgrade settlement may cause the railway quality deterioration, including the differential geometry of the rails. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a hybrid cone penetrometer (HCP) to characterize the railway substructure. The HCP consists of an outer rod and an inner mini cone, which can dynamically and statically penetrate the ballast and the subgrade, respectively. An accelerometer and four strain gauges are installed at the head of the outer rod and four strain gauges are attached at the tip of the inner mini cone. In the ballast, the outer rod provides a dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the corrected DCPI (CDCPI) with the energy transferred into the rod head. Then, the inner mini cone is pushed to estimate the strength of the subgrade from the cone tip resistance. Laboratory application tests are performed on the specimen, which is prepared with gravel and sandy soil. In addition, the HCP is applied in the field and compared with the standard dynamic cone penetration test. The results from the laboratory and the field tests show that the cone tip resistance is inversely proportional to the CDCPI. Furthermore, in the subgrade, the HCP produces a high-resolution profile of the cone tip resistance and a profile of the CDCPI in the ballast. This study suggests that the dynamic and static penetration tests using the HCP may be useful for characterizing the railway substructure.

  • Using the results from laboratory soil test, field vane test and piezocone penetration test, the engineering characteristics of the soft ground at east side of Gwangyang Port, which is located at south coast of Jeollanam-do, were investigated and optimal piezocone penetration test depth was derived to calculate piezocone factor. In this paper, the results of 61 laboratory soil tests, 226 times of field vane tests and 26 piezocone penetration tests were used. The result of laboratory soil test suggested that some physical properties such as specific gravity, moisture content, liquid limit and plastic index and others are higher than other south coast regions, meanwhile uniaxial compression strength, undrained shear strength, defined as mechanical property, appeared to be relatively small, distributed widely. According to the plastic chart, the ground was classified as high compressibility clay and low compressibility clay, mostly represent to Type 3 clay by Robertson (1990)'s classification chart. Piezocone factor was calculated by empirical method, based on the undrained shear strength which was obtained by the field vane test. According to the analysis with 3 different depth range, to set the appropriate measured depth range of piezocone penetration for comparation, using average value of the range of 5 times the vane length showed the highest correlation.

  • The increased speed of a train causes increased loads that act on the track substructures. To ensure the safety of the track substructures, proper maintenance and repair are necessary based on an accurate characterization of strength and stiffness. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a cone penetrometer incorporated with the dynamic cone penetration method (CPD) for investigating track substructures. The CPD consists of an outer rod for dynamic penetration in the ballast layer and an inner rod with load cells for static penetration in the subgrade. Additionally, an energy-monitoring module composed of strain gauges and an accelerometer is connected to the head of the outer rod to measure the dynamic responses during the dynamic penetration. Moreover, eight strain gauges are installed in the load cells for static penetration to measure the cone tip resistance and the friction resistance during static penetration. To investigate the applicability of the developed CPD, laboratory and field tests are performed. The results of the CPD tests, i.e., profiles of the corrected dynamic cone penetration index (CDI), profiles of the cone tip and friction resistances, and the friction ratio are obtained at high resolution. Moreover, the maximum shear modulus of the subgrade is estimated using the relationships between the static penetration resistances and the maximum shear modulus obtained from the laboratory tests. This study suggests that the CPD test may be a useful method for the characterization of track substructures.

  • This paper is results of investigating the dominant factors influencing to coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction of Korean marine clays and their correlations through literature review. From the results of analyzing data obtained from field tests such as piezocone penetration and dilatometer tests as well as laboratory tests, coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction was found to increase with increase of stiffness index of soil while it decreases with the increase of dissipation time of pore pressure developed during field tests. In general, the coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction tends to increase with increase of undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure although correlation between them are relatively low. Friction ratio has a high correlation with coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction in case of friction ratio being greater than 1.0. For methods of estimating coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction with different testing device, values obtained from methods of P2-logt and DMT-A with dilatometer were quite similar to values from piezocone penetration test. Consistency of soil is quite proportional to coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction. Clear correlation between coefficients of consolidation in the horizontal and the vertical directions could not be found. coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction estimated from the results of field test tends to be 1.13~3.11 times greater than that obtained from laboratory tests.

  • The constrained modulus, representative property to evaluate compressibility of soil, is needed to estimate the settlement of ground structure. A series of lab and field cone penetration tests for clayey soil of Busan new-port and Noksan industrial area were conducted to evaluate the estimation method of constrained modulus. Since CPT generates large deformation of ground, it is difficult to correlate the cone resistance with the constrained modulus. Therefore, appropriate correlation between them is essential to estimate the constrained modulus based on CPT results. The test results show that the ratio of the constrained modulus to the cone resistance is inversely proportional with plasticity index. Based on this result, the estimation method of constrained modulus for Busan clay is suggested.
