Analysis of Engine Load Factor for a 78 kW Class Agricultural Tractor According to Agricultural Operations (농작업에 따른 78 kW급 농업용 트랙터 엔진 부하율 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to calculate and analyze the engine load factor of major agricultural operations using a 78 kW class agricultural tractor for estimating the emission of air pollutants and greenhouse. Engine load data were collected using controller area network (CAN) communication. Main agricultural operations were selected as plow tillage (PT), rotary tillage (RT), baler operation (BO), loader operation (LO), driving on soil (DS), and driving on concrete (DC). The engine power was calculated using the measured engine load data. A weight factor was applied to load factor for considering usage ratio according to agricultural operations. Weight factors for different agricultural operations were calculated to be 27.4%, 32.9%, 17.5%, 7.7%, 4.5%, and 10.0% for PT, RT, BO, LO, DS, and DC, respectively. As a result of the field test, load factors were 0.74, 0.93, 0.41, 0.23, 0.27, and 0.21 for PT, RT, BO, LO, DS, and DC, respectively. The engine load factor was the highest for RT. Finally, as a result of applying the weight factor for usage ratio of agricultural operations, the integrated engine load factor was estimated to be 0.63, which was about 1.31 times higher than the conventional applied load factor of 0.48. In future studies, we plan to analyze the engine load factor by considering various horsepower and working conditions of the tractor.

  • 3Y-TZP ceramics obtained by doping 3 mol.% of Y2O3 to ZrO2 to stabilize the phase transition are widely used in the engineering ceramic industry due to their excellent mechanical properties such as high strength, fracture toughness, and wear resistance. An additional increase in mechanical properties is possible by manufacturing a composite in which a high-hardness material such as oxide or carbide is added to the 3Y-TZP matrix. In this study, composite powder was prepared by dispersing a designated percentage of WC in the 3Y-TZP matrix, and the results were compared after manufacturing the composite using the different processes of spark plasma sintering and HP. The difference between the densification behavior and porosity with the process mechanism was investigated. The correlation between the process conditions and phase formation was examined based on the crystalline phase formation behavior. Changes to the microstructure according to the process conditions were compared using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The toughness-strengthening mechanism of the composite with densification and phase formation was also investigated.

Jet A-1 Coking Tests under Conditions Simulating Gas Turbine Combustor (가스터빈 연소기 모사 조건에서의 Jet A-1 코킹시험)

  • In a gas turbine, fuel is exposed to a high temperature environment until it is fed to the combustor through the injector. Hydrocarbon fuels can coke under high temperature conditions, which can cause coking material to deposit on fuel lines or block the injector passages. In this study, a specimen simulating a fuel line located inside a gas turbine and Jet A-1 were heated using electric devices. Jet A-1 coking tests were performed by changing the wall temperature of the stainless steel specimen and the temperature of Jet A-1 supplied to the specimen. After the coked specimens were cut, the coking material and the inner surface were analyzed using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer and a field emission scanning electron microscope.

  • Efforts for reducing greenhouse gas emission coping with climate change have also been performed in the field of water and wastewater works. In particular, the technical development for reducing energy has been applied in operating water distribution system. The reduction of energy in water distribution system can be achieved by reducing structural loss induced by topographic variation and operational loss induced by leakage and friction. However, both analytical and numerical approaches for analyzing energy budget of water distribution system has been challengeable because energy components are affected by the complex interaction of affecting factors. This research drew mathematical equations for 5 types of state (hypothetical, ideal, leak-included ideal, leak-excluded real, and real), which depend on the assumptions of topographic variation, leakage, and friction. Furthermore, the derived equations are schematically illustrated and applied into simple water network. The suggested method makes water utilities quantify, classify, and evaluate the energy of water distribution system.

Corrosion Protection Properties of Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles for Water-Based Epoxy Coatings on 2024-T3 Aluminum Alloys

  • In this study, cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and cobalt-doped magnetite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. They were then used as corrosion inhibitors for corrosion protection of AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys. These obtained nanoparticles were characterized by x-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and Zeta potential measurements. Corrosion inhibition activities of Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were determined by performing electrochemical measurements for bare AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys in 0.05 M NaCl + 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution containing Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Corrosion protection for AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys by a water-based epoxy with or without the synthesized Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy during immersion in 0.1 M NaCl solution. The corrosion protection of epoxy coating deposited on the AA2024-T3 surface was improved by incorporating Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles in the coating. The corrosion protection performance of the epoxy coating containing CoFe2O4 was higher than that of the epoxy coating containing Co3O4.

Effect of Carbon Fiber Layer on Electrochemical Properties of Activated Carbon Electrode

  • This study investigates the effects of a carbon fiber layer formed on the surface of an etched aluminum current collector on the electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes for an electric double layer capacitor. A particle size analyzer, field-emission SEM, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm analyzer are employed to analyze the structure of the carbon fiber layer. The electric and electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes using a carbon fiber layer are evaluated using an electrode resistance meter and a charge-discharge tester, respectively. To uniformly coat the surface with carbon fiber, we applied a planetary mill process, adjusted the particle size, and prepared the carbon paste by dispersing in a binder. Subsequently, the carbon paste was coated on the surface of the etched aluminum current collector to form the carbon under layer, after which an activated carbon slurry was coated to form the electrodes. Based on the results, the interface resistance of the EDLC cell made of the current collector with the carbon fiber layer was reduced compared to the cell using the pristine current collector. The interfacial resistance decreased from 0.0143 Ω·cm2 to a maximum of 0.0077 Ω·cm2. And degradation reactions of the activated carbon electrodes are suppressed in the 3.3 V floating test. We infer that it is because the improved electric network of the carbon fiber layer coated on the current collector surface enhanced the electron collection and interfacial diffusion while protecting the surface of the cathode etched aluminum; thereby suppressing the formation of Al-F compounds.

Rich Se Nanoparticles Modified Mo-W18O49 as Enhanced Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

  • Herein a rich, Se-nanoparticle modified Mo-W18O49 nanocomposite as efficient hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst is reported via hydrothermal synthesized process. In this work, Na2SeSO3 solution and selenium powder are used as Se precursor material. The structure and composition of the nanocomposites are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), EDX spectrum analysis and the corresponding element mapping. The improved electrochemical properties are studied by current density, and EIS analysis. The as-prepared Se modified Mo-W18O49 synthesized via Na2SeSO3 is investigated by FE-SEM analysis and found to exhibit spherical particles combined with nanosheets. This special morphology effectively improves the charge separation and transfer efficiency, resulting in enhanced photoelectric behavior compared with that of pure Mo-W18O49. The nanomaterial obtained via Na2SeSO3 solution demonstrates a high HER activity and low overpotential of -0.34 V, allowing it to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2.

Variations in electrode characteristics through simplification of phosphorus-doped NiCo2O4 electrode manufacturing process (인이 도핑된 NiCo2O4 전극 제조 공정의 간소화를 통한 전극 특성의 변화)

  • In this study, phosphorus (P)-doped nickel cobaltite (P-NiCo2O4) and nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (P-NiCo-LDH) were synthesized on nickel (Ni) foam as a conductive support using hydrothermal synthesis. The thermal properties, crystal structure, microscopic surface morphology, chemical distribution, electronic state of the constituent elements on the sample surface, and electrical properties of the synthesized P-NiCo2O4 and P-NiCo-LDH samples were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The P-NiCo2O4 electrode exhibited a specific capacitance of 1,129 Fg-1 at a current density of 1 Ag-1, while the P-NiCo-LDH electrode displayed a specific capacitance of 1,012 Fg-1 at a current density of 1 Ag-1. When assessing capacity changes for 3,000 cycles, the P-NiCo2O4 electrode exhibited a capacity retention rate of 54%, whereas the P-NiCo-LDH electrode showed a capacity retention rate of 57%.

Nano particle size control of Pt/C catalysts manufactured by the polyol process for fuel cell application (폴리올법으로 제조된 Pt/C 촉매의 연료전지 적용을 위한 나노 입자 크기제어)

  • This research aims to enhance the efficiency of Pt/C catalysts due to the limited availability and high cost of platinum in contemporary fuel cell catalysts. Nano-sized platinum particles were distributed onto a carbon-based support via the polyol process, utilizing the metal precursor H2PtCl6·6H2O. Key parameters such as pH, temperature, and RPM were carefully regulated. The findings revealed variations in the particle size, distribution, and dispersion of nano-sized Pt particles, influenced by temperature and pH. Following sodium hydroxide treatment, heat treatment procedures were systematically executed at diverse temperatures, specifically 120, 140, and 160 ℃. Notably, the thermal treatment at 140 ℃ facilitated the production of Pt/C catalysts characterized by the smallest platinum particle size, measuring at 1.49 nm. Comparative evaluations between the commercially available Pt/C catalysts and those synthesized in this study were meticulously conducted through cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FE-SEM EDS) methodologies. The catalyst synthesized at 160 ℃ demonstrated superior electrochemical performance; however, it is imperative to underscore the necessity for further optimization studies to refine its efficacy.

Hydrogen sensor using Pt-loaded porous In2O3 nanoparticle structures (백금 담지 다공성 산화인듐 나노입자 구조를 이용한 수소센서)

  • We prepared a highly sensitive hydrogen (H2) sensor based on Indium oxides (In2O3) porous nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with Platinum (Pt) nanoparticle in the range of 1.6~5.7 at.%. In2O3 NPs were fabricated by microwave irradiation method, and decorations of Pt nanoparticles were performed by electroless plating on In2O3 NPs. Crystal structures, morphologies, and chemical information on Pt-loaded In2O3 NPs were characterized by grazing-incident X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. The effect of the Pt nanoparticles on the H2-sensing performance of In2O3 NPs was investigated over a low concentration range of 5 ppm of H2 at 150-300 ℃ working temperatures. The results showed that the H2 response greatly increased with decreasing sensing temperature. The H2 response of Pt loaded porous In2O3 NPs is higher than that of pristine In2O3 NPs. H2 gas selectivity and high sensitivity was explained by the extension of the electron depletion layer and catalytic effect. Pt loaded porous In2O3 NPs sensor can be a robust manner for achieving enhanced gas selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of H2.
