The electric coupling between the lithosphere and the ionosphere is examined. The electric field is considered as a timevarying irregular vertical Coulomb field presumably produced on the Earth's surface before an earthquake within its epicentral zone by some micro-processes in the lithosphere. It is shown that the Fourier component of this electric field with a frequency of 500 Hz and a horizontal scale-size of 100 km produces in the nighttime ionosphere of high and middle latitudes a transverse electric field with a magnitude of ~20 mV/m if the peak value of the amplitude of this Fourier component is just 30 V/m. The time-varying vertical Coulomb field with a frequency of 500 Hz penetrates from the ground into the ionosphere by a factor of ${\sim}7{\times}10^5$ more efficient than a time independent vertical electrostatic field of the same scale size. The transverse electric field with amplitude of 20 mV/m will cause perturbations in the nighttime F region electron density through heating the F region plasma resulting in a reduction of the downward plasma flux from the protonosphere and an excitation of acoustic gravity waves.
A clear bipolar (negative/positive) signature in the Ey component was observed by the Cluster satellite in the magnetotail during a sudden impulse (si) on October 11, 2001 (day 284). During the interval of the negative perturbation in Ey, the magnetic field strength in Bx, a dominant magnetic field component, was nearly constant. However, the amplitude of Bx was strongly enhanced during the positive Ey perturbation. We suggest that the observed E and B field variations are due to outward/inward plasma motions, associated with expanded and then compressed magnetopause variations. We also observed quasi-periodic geomagnetic perturbations in the Pc5 band (∼1-6 mHz) at the low-latitude ground station Kakioka (L = 1.25) following the si event. They were highly correlated with the magnetic field perturbations at Cluster in the magnetotail (Xgse = ∼12 Re). We show that the source of these perturbations is the quasi-periodic solar wind pressure variations moving tailward.
A three-dimensional (3D) unstructured hydrodynamic solver for transient two-phase flows has been developed for a 3D component of a nuclear system code and a component-scale analysis tool. A two-fluid three-field model is used for the two-phase flows. The three fields represent a continuous liquid, an entrained liquid, and a vapour field. An unstructured grid is adopted for realistic simulations of the flows in a complicated geometry. The semi-implicit ICE (Implicit Continuous-fluid Eulerian) numerical scheme has been applied to the unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the numerical method and the preliminary results of the calculations. The results show that the modified numerical scheme is robust and predicts the phase change and the flow transitions due to boiling and flashing very well.
Let ${\tilde{M}}$ be a Riemannian manifold equipped with a concircular vector field ${\tilde{X}}$ and M a submanifold (with its induced metric) of ${\tilde{M}}$. Denote by X the restriction of ${\tilde{X}}$ on M and by $X^T$ the tangential component of X, called the canonical field of M. In this article we study submanifolds of ${\tilde{M}}$ whose canonical field $X^T$ is also concircular. Several characterizations and classification results in this respect are obtained.
In the evaluation of aging degradation on the structural materials based on the fracture mechanics, the detection and size prediction of defect are very important. Aiming at nondestructive detection and size prediction ol defect with high accuracy and resolution, therefore, an lnduced Current Focusing Potential Drop(ICFPD) technique has been developed. The principle of this technique is to induce a focusing current at an exploratory region by an induction wire flowing an alternating current(AC) that is a constant ampere and frequency. Defects are assessed with the potential drops that are measured the induced current on the surface of metallic material by the potential pick-up pins. In this study, the lCFPD technique was applied for evaluating the location and size of the surface crack and blind crack made in plate specimens, and also for detecting the defects existing in valve, a field component, that were developed by SCC etc. during the service. The results of this present study show that surface crack and blind crack are able to defect with potential drop. these cracks are distinguished with the distribution of potential drop, and the crack depths can be estimated with each normalized potential drop that are parameters estimating the depth of each type crack. In the field component, the defects estimated by experiment result correspond with those in the cutting face of the measuring point within a higher sensitivity.

This article presents the statistical characteristics of elastic floor acceleration spectra that represent the peak response demand of non-structural components attached to a nonlinear supporting frame. For this purpose, a set of stiff and flexible general moment resisting frames with periods of 0.3-3.6 sec. are analyzed using forty-nine near-field strong ground motion records. Peak accelerations are derived for each single degree of freedom non-structural component, supported by the above mentioned frames, through a direct-integration time-history analysis. These accelerations are obtained by Floor Acceleration Response Spectrum (FARS) method. They are statistically analyzed in the next step to achieve a better understanding of their height-wise distributions. The factors that affect FARS values are found in the relevant state of the art. Here, they are summarized to evaluate the amplification and/or reduction of FARS values especially when the supporting structures undergo inelastic behavior. The properties of FARS values are studied in three regions: long-period, fundamental-period and short-period. Maximum elastic acceleration response of non-structural component, mounted on inelastic frames, depends on the following factors: inelasticity intensity and modal periods of supporting structure; natural period, damping ratio and location of non-structural component. The FARS values, corresponded to the modal periods of supporting structure, are strongly reduced beyond elastic domain. However, they could be amplified in the transferring period domain between the mentioned modal periods. In the next step, the amplification and/or reduction of FARS values, caused by inelastic behavior of supporting structure, are calculated. A parameter called the response acceleration reduction factor ($R_{acc}$), has been previously used for far-field earthquakes. The feasibility of extending this parameter for near-field motions is focused here, suggested repeatedly in the relevant sources. The nonlinearity of supporting structure is included in ($R_{acc}$) for better estimation of maximum non-structural component absolute acceleration demand, which is ordinarily neglected in the seismic design provisions.
Let ${\gamma}$ be a hyperbolic closed orbit of a $C^1$ vector field X on a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold M, and let $C_X({\gamma})$ be the chain component of X which contains ${\gamma}$. We say that $C_X({\gamma})$ is $C^1$ robustly shadowable if there is a $C^1$ neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$ of X such that for any $Y{\in}\mathcal{U}$, $C_Y({\gamma}_Y)$ is shadowable for $Y_t$, where ${\gamma}_Y$ denotes the continuation of ${\gamma}$ with respect to Y. In this paper, we prove that any $C^1$ robustly shadowable chain component $C_X({\gamma})$ does not contain a hyperbolic singularity, and it is hyperbolic if $C_X({\gamma})$ has no non-hyperbolic singularity.

In this paper we predict the track of typhoons using a Bayesian principal component regression model based on wind field data. Data is obtained at each time point and we applied the Bayesian principal component regression model to conduct the track prediction based on the time point. Based on regression model, we applied to variable selection prior and two kinds of prior distribution; normal and Laplace distribution. We show prediction results based on Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) estimator and Median Probability Model (MPM) estimator. We analysis 8 typhoons in 2006 using data obtained from previous 6 years (2000-2005). We compare our prediction results with a moving-nest typhoon model (MTM) proposed by the Korea Meteorological Administration. We posit that is possible to predict the track of a typhoon accurately using only a statistical model and without a dynamical model.
It is demonstrated by using a highly positive uranium ion as a test case that the exact relation between the small and the large components of a Dirac spinor in relativistic self-consistent-field (RSCF) calculations is not fully satisfied by the kinetic balance condition only even for two electron systems. For a fixed number of large component basis functions, total energies are sensitive to the change of the size of the small component basis sets even after the kinetic balance condition is fully satisfied. However, the kinetic balance condition appears to be a reasonable guideline in generating reliable and practical basis sets for most applications of RSCF calculations. With a complete small component basis set, energies from RSCF calculations exhibit a variational behavior, implying the stability of the present RSCF procedure.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the changes in ingredients according to its cultivation method by examining the content of saponin and non-saponin components of ginseng. Methods: Ginseng saponin component analysis was compared and reviewed using the high-performance liquid chromatography method, and acidic polysaccharide component was measured using the carbazole sulfuric acid method. Results: The comparative analysis of ginseng saponin content of 4 and 6 years old fresh ginseng showed the following results. According to the cultivation method, upland field cultivation fresh ginseng showed higher average content of crude saponin than paddy field cultivation fresh ginseng. Whereas, paddy field cultivation fresh ginseng showed higher average content of total saponin than upland field cultivation fresh ginseng. Ginsenoside Rb1 showed higher content of paddy field cultivation fresh ginseng than upland field cultivation fresh ginseng in 6 years old ginseng. However, it showed higher content of upland field cultivation fresh ginseng than paddy field cultivation fresh ginseng in 4 years old ginseng. Additionally, ginsenoside Rg1 showed higher content of paddy field cultivation fresh ginseng than upland field cultivation fresh ginseng in 6 years old ginseng, whereas upland field cultivation fresh ginseng showed higher content of paddy field cultivation fresh ginseng in 4 years old ginseng. The effect on the content of ginseng saponins and acidic polysaccharides according to paddy field and upland field cultivation methods is considered to be small. Conclusions: The paddy field cultivation method, which is more efficient in production cost due to depletion of farmland and long-distance cultivation, is considered to be an economical cultivation method.
