Strengthening as well as correcting unsightly deflections of reinforced concrete (RC) beam may be accomplished by retrofitting. An innovative way to do this retrofitting that is proposed in this study utilizes turnbuckle to apply external post-tensioning. This Turnbuckle External Post-Tensioning (T-EPT) was experimentally proven to improve the serviceability and load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete beams. The T-EPT system comprises a braced steel frame and a turnbuckle mechanism to provide the prestressing force. To further develop the T-EPT, this research aims to develop a numerical scheme to analyze the structural performance of reinforced concrete beams with this kind of retrofitting. The fiber method analysis was used as the numerical scheme. The fiber method is a simplified finite element method that is used in this study to predict the elastic and inelastic behavior of a reinforced concrete beam. With this, parametric study was conducted so that the effective setup of doing the T-EPT retrofitting may be determined. Different T-EPT configurations were investigated and their effectiveness evaluated. Overall, the T-EPT was effective in improving the serviceability condition and load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete beam.

In this study, it was experimentally investigated the effectiveness of repair and strengthening methods for RC beams deteriorated under severs enviromental conditions. Polymer cement were employed to restore the sectional loss and aramid fiber-reinforced sheet was used to reinforce the surface subject to tension. Repaired and strengthened reinforced-concrete samples were subjected to loading tests. The tests revealed that the sectional restoration enhanced the loading capability of the sample structures. Additional strengthening with one aramid fiber-reinforced sheet improved 18% of yielding load and 30% of ultimate load of the structure. Reinforcing with two aramid fiber-reinforced sheets brought about an enhancement of 22% of yielding loading and 49% of ultimate load.
It was well recognized that the damages associated mainly with the aging of civil infrastructures were one of very serious problems for assurance of safety and reliability. Recently carbon fiber sheet(CFS) has been widely used for reinforcement and rehabilitation of damaged concrete beam. However, the fundamental mechanism of load transfer and its load-resistant for carbon fiber sheet reinforced concrete are not fully understood. In this study, three point bending test has been carried out to understand the damage progress and the micro-failure mechanism of CFS reinforced mortars. For this purpose, four different types of specimens are used, that is, mortar, steel bar reinforced mortar, CFS reinforced mortar, and steel bar and CFS reinforced morter. Acoustic Emission(AE) technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of damage progress and the failure mechanism of specimens. in addition, two-dimensional AE source location was also performed to monitor crack initiation and propagation processes for these specimens.

This study was performed to provide basic data for development and construction of reinforced soil wall that mixed with reinforcements such as calcium carbonate, monofilament fiber. In order to determine proper moisture content and mixing ratio by weight of reinforcement, Poisson's ratio and compressive strength tests for sandy soil had been conducted. Model tests for long-term behavior of reinforced soil wall were carried out to investigate the effect of reinforcement during loads and under static loads. The results of creep and model tests for sandy soil compared with clayey soil. Reinforced sandy soil mixed with calcium carbonate and cement showed brittle rupture by shear but that of mixed with monofilament fiber showed ductile rupture due to the tension force of fiber. It was shown that when age increased, creep strain of reinforced soil under sustained load approached constant values.

Today, carbon fibers are used as heating elements. Carbon fibers are generally used to reinforce composite materials because they are lightweight and have a high strength and modulus. Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are used for aerospace, automobile, and wind turbine blade applications. This work explored the possibility of using carbon fiber reinforced composite materials as self heating materials. The temperatures of the carbon fiber reinforced composites were measured. These results verified that the carbon fiber reinforced composite materials could be used as heating elements. A glass fiber was laminated using various methods. The thermal characteristics of the composites were evaluated. This confirmed that the generation of heat varied according to the lamination thicknesses of the carbon fiber and glass fiber. As the number of carbon fiber laminations increased, the heat-generating temperature increased. In contrast, as the number of glass fiber laminations increased, the amount of heat decreased. The generation of heat and ability to remain warm could be controlled by controlling the carbon fiber and glass fiber laminations.

This study presents a mathematical model predicting the stress-strain behavior of fiber reinforced (FMMCs) and fiber/particle reinforced metal matrix composites (F/P MMCs). MMCs were fabricated by squeeze casting method using Al2O3 short fiber and particle as reinforcement, and A356 aluminum alloy as matrix. The fiber/particle ratios of F/P MMCs were 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 with the total reinforcement volume fraction of 20 vol.%, and the FMMCs were reinforced with 10 vol,%, 15 vol. %, 20 vol. % of fibers. Tensile tests were conducted and compared with predictions which were derived using laminate analogy theory and multi-failure model of reinforcements. Results show that the tensile strength of FMMCs with 10 vol.% of fiber was well matched with prediction, and as the fiber volume increases, predictions become larger than experimental results. The difference between the prediction and experiment is considered to be a result of matrix allowance of fiber damage in tensile loading. As the fiber volume fraction in FMMCs increases, the fiber damage increases and so that the tensile strength is reduced. The strength of F/P MMCs approaches more closely to the prediction than FMMCs reinforced with 20 vol.% of fibers because F/P MMCs contains small quantity of fibers and thus has a positive effect in fiber strengthening.

PURPOSES: As pavement generally provides service shorter than an expected life cycle, maintenance cost increases gradually. In order to help extending the service life and reduce maintenance cost, a new multi-functional composite pavement system is being developed in Korea. METHODS: This study is a part to develop the multi-functional composite pavement and is to investigate the mechanical performances of fiber-reinforced lean concrete for pavement subbase. The inherent problem of fiber reinforced concrete is dispersion of fibers in concrete mix. This study additionally evaluated fiber dispersion characteristics with respect to different fiber types. RESULTS: From the test results, the compressive strengths of the concretes satisfied the required limit of 5MPa at 7days. The standard deviation of the measured number of fibers were lower in the order of nylon, steel fiber and polypropylene. CONCLUSIONS: Reject ash was shown to be satisfactory as a replacement material to Portland cement in lean concrete base. The fiber volume fraction is suggested to be 0.4% even though the fracture toughness did not vary significantly with respect to fiber types. However, fracture energy absorbed up to complete failure increased with the increased fiber volume fraction increment.

Generally, normal concrete has the disadvantages of low tensile strength, low ductility and volume instability. To improve its performance, fiber reinforced cimentitious composite(FRCC) have been development. These composites are composed of cement, sand, water, a small amount of admixtures, and an optimal amount of fiber like synthetic fiber and steel fiber. This research investigates influence of sand, hybrid fiber and fiber volume fraction, and reports the test results of mechanical properties, fracture behavior and failure pattern of the FRCC. Our experiment was observed that sand mixed FRCC has lower compressive strength and higher bending strength than no sand mixed FRCC, and more steel fiber mixed FRCC has higher compressive strength and bending strength. Hybrid FRCC of steel and polypropylene had superior properties than FRCC of polypropylene only in same fiber volume fraction.

This study evaluated the bonding property of fiber and flexural behavior of fiber reinforced concrete. Amorphous steel fiber, hooked steel fiber and polyamide fiber was used for evaluation of bonding property and flexural behavior. As a result, the hooked steel fiber was pulled out from matrix when peak stress. However amorphous steel fiber occurred shear failure because bonding strength between fiber and matrix was higher than tensile strength of fiber. Polyamide fibers occurred significantly displacement to peak stress because of elongation of fiber. After that peak stress, fiber was cut off. Amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete had a greater maximum flexural load compared with hooked steel fiber reinforced concrete because bonding performance between fiber and matrix was high and mixed population of fiber was many. However flexural stress was rapidly reduced in load-deflection curve because of shear failure of fiber. Flexural stress of hooked steel fiber reinforced concrete was slowly reduced because fiber was pulled out from the matrix. In the case of polyamide fiber reinforced concrete, flexural stress was rapidly lowered because of elongation of fiber. However flexural stress was increased again because of bonding property between polyamide fiber and matrix. The pull-out properties of the fiber and matrix has effect on the deformation capacity and flexural strength of fiber reinforced concrete.
In this study, to understand mechanical characteristic of hybrid reinforced concrete by PVA-fiber 6 mm and PP-fiber 50 mm, which are organic fiber replaced macro-fiber with PP-fiber, four mixed Hybrid Organic Fibers Reinforced Concrete (HFRC) is compared with one mixed plain concrete without fiber reinforcement. Volume portion of the fibers are limited under one percent. The result presents that hybrid reinforcement of the organic fibers cannot maximize stiffness and ductility behavior of the steel fiber reinforcement. however, in comparison to plain concrete, it is confirmed that meaningful relation between toughness index and equivalent flexural strength with advanced ductility behavior. Also, in the case of concrete hybrid reinforced by organic fiber, when the volume portion of the fiber increases, ductility also increases. PP-fiber, which is macro fiber, has more effect on the flexural behavior of concrete than PVA-fiber, which is micro fiber, does. The result also shows that it decrease chloride penetration in chloride penetration test.
