  • In several industrial fields, epoxy resin is widely used as an adhesive for co-curing and manufacturing various structures. Controlling the manufacturing process is required for ensuring robust bonding performance and the stability of the structures. A fiber optic sensor is suitable for the cure monitoring of epoxy resin owing to the thready shape of the sensor. In this paper, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor was applied for the cure monitoring of epoxy resin. Based on the experimental results, it was demonstrated that the FBG sensor can monitor the status of epoxy resin curing by measuring the strain caused by volume shrinkage and considering the compensation of temperature. In addition, two types of epoxy resin were used for the cure-monitoring; moreover, when compared to each other, it was found that the two types of epoxy had different cure-processes in terms of the change of strain during the curing. Therefore, the study proved that the FBG sensor is very profitable for the cure-monitoring of epoxy resin.

  • To investigate the causes of the thermal deformations of packaging materials when microwave-heating ready-to-eat sauce products packaged in stand-up pouches, patterns of temperature changes were determined using an infra-red thermal imaging camera, a thermo-sensitive tape, and a fiver-optic thermometer. The temperature distributions of spicy chicken sauce and Indian curry samples in a stand-up pouch were found to be uneven during micrewave heating. A sharp increase in the temperature was detected, especially above the filling layers and in the corners of sealing layers of the package. The temperature measurements using an infra-red thermal imaging camera are restricted to the surface, and therefore might underestimate the actual temperature. Using a thermo-sensitive tape, temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$ were measured in the spicy chicken sauce sample showing package deformation. When the temperature is measured using a fiber-optic thermometer, it is crucial to have precise sensor performance to accurately measure the temperature in a narrow hot-spot area of the package. In this experiment, the fiber-optic thermometer was attached to a GaAs crystal sensor, which obtained more sensitive and accurate temperature measurements than those by a convectional sensor.

  • An all-digital closed-loop (ADCL) signal processor for an open-loop FOG was developed to replace the analog circuitry of a Digital Phase Tracking (DPT) signal processor with new digital circuitry. When the ADCL signal processor without a stabilizer for fiber phase modulator (FPM) was attached to the FOG, temperature drift of FOG was about 0.26$\mu$rad/$^{\circ}C$, which makes the FOG unusable in medium or higher-grade applications. This drift was due to variations of phase modulation amplitude and phase delay of the FPM. The stabilizer controls its phase modulation amplitude and phase delay by regulating the ratio of harmonics of the FOG output. Thus, the stabilizer reduces the drift of the FOG to negligible.

  • In this paper, a Fiber Bragg Grating (FRG) sensor system is described and FBGs are well-suited for long term and extremely severe experiments, where traditional strain gauges fail. In the system, a reflect wave-length measurement method which employs a tunable light source to find out the center wave-length of FBG sensor is used. We apply the FBG system to nuclear energy Power Plant for structural integrity test to measure the displacement of the structure under designed pressure and to check the elasticity of the structure by measuring the residual strain. The system works very well and it is expected that it can be used for a real-time strain. temperature and vibration detector of smart structure.

  • Thermally-stabilized fiber-optic current sensors are proposed and demonstrated. The sensor head is made of two coil formers combined perpendicularly. In this sensor head, bending-induced birefringences can be reduced to the level much smaller than those of the single former type because the eigen-axes of the two perpendicular coil formers are made orthogonal to each other. Moreover, thermal variation of the birefringence is also expected to be minimized by the orthogonality of the two polarization eigen-axes. We changed the temperature slowly in the range of 20~45$^{\circ}C$ during 100 minutes. The overall linearity of the sensor is better than 1.2% in the range of 0~1000A. The long-term fluctuation of the sensor is less than 1% when measured for 3 hours at 500A and room temperature. Two orthogonally-polarized laser diodes are combined together to make the incident beam unpolarized. In the signal processing, the signals are separated by two parts and normalized respectively, which minimize the efects of optical fluctuations coming from sources, connectors, etc.

  • In this paper, we manufactured the regenerated FBG by the thermal annealing of seed FBG based on UV irradiation. The writing conditions of regenerated FBGs were investigated in four types of optical fiber. FBGs written in $H_2$-free fiber were erased and not regenerated during the thermal annealing. FBG written in $H_2$ loaded Boron co-doped fiber was erased at the temperature of about $580^{\circ}C$ and regenerated about $590^{\circ}C$. However, the extinction of regenerated FBG started at the temperature over $900^{\circ}C$ and then FBG disappeared out. FBG written in $H_2$ loaded Ge high doped fiber was erased and regenerated around the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ and maintained until the end of the thermal annealing. The reflection of the regenerated FBG was decreased about 12 dB and the center wavelength of the regenerated FBG was shifted about 0.7 nm compared with that of the seed FBG. The thermal characteristics of the regenerated FBG were analyzed by reheating from room temperature to $980^{\circ}C$. As results, the regenerated FBG had survived without a decrease of reflection and the thermal sensitivity was $15pm^{\circ}C$.

  • A fiber optic based weight sensor has fabricated using a fiber Bragg grating with a weight sensitive. The sensing concept exploits the inherent characteristics of the FBG and is based on the strain effect induced in the fiber Bragg grating through. A direct indication of the weight level is given by the shift of the Bragg wavelength caused by the expansion of the sensing material. A FBG behaves like a spectral filter which has inherent characteristics that render it very sensitive to strain and temperature. The sensing principle is also based on the strain effect induced in the FBG through the caused by the weight. The experimental setup used for the initial investigation to characterize the mass response of the sensor. The transmitted signal from the sensor was monitored using an optical spectrum analyzer with a resolution bandwidth of 0.4nm. In this paper, we presented the spectral characterization and shaping of FBG by scanning a mass element that affects a small grating fraction at a time, without permanent effects on the optical fiber when the various wavelength and strain is removed. That is, destruction when the optical fiber for weight is physically damaged.

  • In this paper, we present the simulataneous monitoring of the strain and temperature during cures f various composite laminates using fiber Bragg grating/extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (FBG/EFPI) hybrid sensors. Three types of graphite/epoxy composite were used : a undirectional laminate, a symmetric cross-ply laminate, and a fabric laminate. Two FBG/EFPI hybrid sensors were embedded in each laminate at different directions and different locations. We performed the real time monitoring of fabrication strains and temperatures at two points within the composite laminates during cure process in an autoclave. Throuhg these experiments, FBG/EFPI sensors proved to be an efficient choice for smart cure monitoring of composite structures.
