  • The fiber reinforced thermoplastics(FRTP) were prepared with polypropylene fiber(PP) as matrix and polyvinyl alchol(VF), aramid(KF) or polyamide fiber(PAF) as the reinforcing materials using the integrated fiber mixing apparatus. The reinforced thermoplastic sheets were prepared by com¬pression molding and their morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were characterized. In the morphological properties of composites, the wettability of the reinforced thermoplastics were decreased in proportion to the content of fibers. At low angular frequency, the viscosity of PAF /PP and VF/PP composite was increased with the content of reinforced fiber. However at high frequency the viscosity of composite reinforced with 5~20wt% fiber, was shown the reduced values which approaches that of the neat matrix. The mechanical properties of the composite were changed with the content of reinforecd fiber, and VF/PP and KF/PP composite had better properties than PAF/PP system.

  • The properties of FRP(fiber-reinforced plastics) depend not only on the characteristics of the matrix but also on the structure of fiber mat and the fiber type of reinforcement. Therefore it is very important to study the characteristics of reinforcement and matrix. In this paper, a method is proposed which can be used to measure the mean coeffcient of separation for the press molding of FRP, and the mean equivalent coefficient of separation is obtained from the separation coefficient. And the relationship between the mean equivalent coefficient of separation and the structure of fiber mat is discussed. The effects of corrlelation coefficient between separation and orientation on the mean equivalent coefficient are also presented.

  • In this study, bolted joint made of Glass-Mat Reinforced Thermoplastics (GMT) specimen was under tensile loading to investigate the relation between joint strength and glass-fiber weight fraction of the flat plate specimen. The effect of molding conditions such as the initial size of a GMT charge and molding temperatures was investigated under plane strain condition. In consideration of the specimen geometry, minimum end distance and width of the specimen to induce the bearing fracture mode of the bolted joint were determined. And finally, the effect of the outer diameter of washer and clamping pressure on joint strength was also investigated. Since joint strength is dependent on the local glass-fiber weight fraction, experimentally measured strength was modified, considering its irregular values of the specimen molded under various processing conditions in order to obtain a reasonable correlation between the two.

  • We review the modeling and simulation of fiber orientation during injection molding processes of short fiber reinforced thermoplastics. Generally, a group of fibers are described in terms of probability distribution function or orientation tensor. Various closure approximation models to express higher order tensor in terms of Bower order tensors are reviewed. Rheology of fiber suspensions, multiple fiber-fiber interaction and numerical technique for the prediction of fiber orientation are also considered for concentrated situations.

  • A main property for fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite material in compression molding is the flow of fibers. This flow is so effective a long direction of acting force that this study examined for the inclined angel of 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and 6$^{\circ}$. Below the near softing temperature of plastic, the fiber has been fractured at a point so that the fiber strength is smaller then the local hydrostatic stress in the mold. It has been found that the position of fracture is changing accrding to the incling angle. In case of the above softing temperature, the larger the inclined is, the farther the flow of fiber move. Also the plastic flow has been progresed with the cicular are type.

  • In recent years, compression molding of long fiber-reinforced thermoplastics has been increased in commercial aspects. In the process of compression molding of composites, the flow analysis must be developed in order to accurately predict the finished part properties as a function of the molding process parameters. In this model FRTP is assumed to be nonisothermal fluid, which has different viscosities in extensional and in shear. For verification of the model, the formation of a knit line in the L-shaped parts is compared with that of experiments results. In this paper we will discuss the effects of extensional & shear viscosity ratio and slip parameter $\alpha$ on the other modle fill-ing parameters.

  • The family of unidirectional continuous fiber reinforced polymeric composites are currently used in automotive bumper beams and load floors. The material properties and mechanical characteristics of the compression molded parts are determined by the curing behavior, fiber orientation and formation of knit lines, which are in turn determined by the mold filling parameters. In this paper, a new model is presented which can be used to predict the 3-dimensional flow under consideration of the slip of mold-composites and anisotropic viscosity of composites during compression molding of unidirectional fiber reinforced thermoplastics for isothermal state. The composites is treated as an incompressible Newtonian fluid. The effects of longitudinal/transverse viscosity ratio A and slip parameter $\alpha$ on the buldging phenomenon and mold filling patterns are also discussed.

  • Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite materials have been widely used in various industrial fields because the design variables can be adjusted according to the application of the required structure. Thermosetting and thermoplastic resins are used as the base materials of CFRP composites for the lightweight construction of automotive components. Thermoplastics have several advantages such as no curing and recyclability compared to thermosetting resin. In this study, CFRP composites were made using the Long-Fiber Thermoplastic-Direct (LFT-D) process. The LFT-D process includes an in-line production system that directly impregnates a thermoplastic resin, extrudes the composite material, and molds it. This process increases the strength and decreases the molding time. The tensile strength characteristics on the mechanical properties of CFRP were analyzed according to the parameters of LFT-D based on thermoplastics. To analyze the properties of CFRP, the specimens were prepared based on the tensile test standard ASTM 3039 of composite materials.
