  • In this study, we have fabricated a fiber-optic radiation sensor using an organic scintillator and plastic optical fiber for brachytherapy dosimetry. Also, we have measured relative depth dose rates of Ir-192 source using a fiber-optic sensor and compared them with the results obtained using a conventional EBT film. Cerenkov lights which can be a noise in measuring scintillating light with a fiber-optic sensor are measured and eliminated by using of a background optical fiber. It is expected that a fiber-optic radiation sensor can be used in brachytherapy dosimetry due to its advantages such as a low cost, simple usage and a small volume.

  • Thermal characteristics, such as diffusivity and temperature induced change in the fiber mode index of rotation sensing fiber coil are critical factors which determine the time varying, thermo-optically induced bias drift of interferometric fiber-optic gyroscopes (IFOGs). In this study, temperature dependence of the transient effect is analyzed in terms of the thermal characteristics of the fiber coil at three different temperatures. By applying an analytic model to the measured bias in the experiments, comprehensive thermal factors of the fiber coil could be extracted effectively. The validity of the model was confirmed by the fact that the extracted values are reasonable results in comparison with well known properties of the materials of the fiber coil. Temperature induced changes in the critical factors were confirmed to be essential in compensating the transient effect over a wide temperature range.

  • A fiber-optic interferometric temperature sensor is fabricated using a hollow optical fiber with 8 um air hole. This interferometric sensor for measuring temperature consists of 13 mm long hollow optical fiber whose one end is attached to the single mode fiber and the other end is cleaved. After the sensor is put in a furnace, the phase change of the sensor output signal is measured as the temperature of the furnace increases from $28^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The phase change of the fiber sensor is proportional to the change of temperature and the relationship between the change of phase and temperature is approximately linear. The sensitivity of this sensor is $2.7{\;}radians/^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, we developed a fiber-optic goniometer for the continuous measurement of knee joint angle which provides important medical information on Alzheimer's disease. The fiber-optic goniometer is composed of a light-emitting diode (LED), a plastic optical fiber (POF), and a voltage output photodiode (PD). As a sensing part of the fiber-optic goniometer, a unclad fiber with regular intervals of 1 mm was fabricated to improve efficiency of bending loss according to the angle variation of knee joint. The emitting light with a center wavelength of 470 nm from a LED is guided by a POF to the PD, the transmitted light is then attenuated by the bending loss inside the bent POF. The intensity variation of the light transmitted from the POF gives rise to a change in output voltage in the fiber-optic goniometer. Therefore, we measured the real-time output voltage of the proposed fiber-optic goniometer using the unclad fiber according to the knee joint angle. Through the repeated experiments, the fiber-optic goniometer shows that it has a reversibility and a wide measurable angle range.

  • In this paper, we propose the time synchronization module on fiber optic repeater to use optic line delay for obtaining time synchronization between up-link and down-link, in the 2.3 GHz WiBro network using TDD/OFDM (Time Division Duplex/Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) Generally, when we use fiber optic repeater to remove the shade area, it occurs transmission delay which is caused by optic transmission between RAS (Radio Access Station) and fiber optic repeater and inner delay of fiber optic repeater. Because the WiBro system is adopting a TOO method and there exists the difference of switching time which is caused by these delay between up-link and down-link, it occurs ISI (Inter Symbol Interference), ICI (Inter Carrier Interference). These interference results in the reduction of the coverage. And the inconsistency between Up-Link and Down-Link switching time maybe gives rise to the interruption of communication. In order to prevent these cases, we propose synchronization module using analog optic line delay as the one of synchronizing up-link and down-link. And we propose the consideration factor for the designing time synchronization module and the feature of optic line of analog method. The measurement result of optic line time synchronization module of structure proposed is as follows, the delay error of $0.5{\mu}g$ and the insertion loss value below maximum 4.5dB in range of $0{\sim}40{\mu}s$. These results fully meet the specification of WiBro System.

  • Fiber optics provide a solution to the problems at interference, capacity and reliability in communication. Approximately 20 kilometera of a six-fiber, multimode, longwave($1.3{\mu}m$), graded index silica glass fiber optic cable was helically wrapped around a phase conductor at a Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) 154KV transmission line. This paper presents an economic comparison of several fiber optic cable installation alternative and discusses the characteristics at the helically wrapped fiber cable, as well as the entire installation, including high voltage phase-to-ground (PTG) end termination, and splicing. The fiber link was installed for the field trial and practical use with overhead composite optical fiber cable which installation performed a few years earlier some other location and is intended to accommodate not only telephone but also supervisory Control and Data Acquisition(SCADA), protective relaying, and telemetry functions.

  • It's important that detect early caries of deciduous and permanent teeth to prevent dental caries and prevserve teeth, especially on proximal surface of deciduous teeth. The reason is that their prominent pulp horn lead to pulp treatment easily due to rapid caries progression. There are conventional exploring, visual inspection and radiographic exam for early caries detection. But, the standard method for diagnosing dental caries is subject and cavitation may be accelerated during exploring procedure. Caries can be diagnosed up to 40% mineral loss with radiograph. $DIFOTI^{(R)}$ (Digital Imaging Fiber-Optic TransIllumination) is diagnostic imaging system for early caries detection using fiber-optic illumination. It is possible that remineralize the tooth surface without tooth preparation and conserve the tooth structure by using $DIFOTI^{(R)}$.

  • In this paper, we propose a new implementation of a failure detector. The implementation uses a dual model of heartbeat and interaction. First, the heartbeat model is adopted to shorten the detection time, if the detection process does not receive the heartbeat message in the expected time. The interaction model is then used to check the process further. The expected time is calculated using the exponential smoothing method. Exponential smoothing can be used to estimate the next arrival time not only in the random data, but also in the data of linear trends. It is proven that the new detector in the paper can eventually be a perfect detector.

Fiber optic BOTDA sensor was constructed with 1 laser diode and 2 electro-optic modulators. The intrusion detection experiment was peformed by the strain inducing set-up installed on an optical table to simulating an intrusion effect. In the result of this experiment, the intrusion effect was well detected as the distance resolution of 3 m through the fiber length of about 4.81 km during 1.5 seconds.

  • In recent years Fiber optic hydrophone systems have been the focus of much attention in the sonar world. For sonar arrays, a fiber optic approach offers the major benefit of passive multiplexing of large numbers of hydrophones without underwater electronics. This paper describes recent development work covering array construction, opto-electronics development, hydrohpone design and sea trials. And the development of an interferometric mult-channel fiber optic hydrophone system which uses time division multiplexing capable of driving in excess of 32 channel is described. For this, a 12 channel time division multiplexing array has been constructed, and the performance of this system is demonstrated by sea trial.
