Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber was grafted with casein after alkaline hydrolysis and chlorination reactions of the original fiber. The structures and morphologies of the casein grafted fiber were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Moisture absorption, specific electric resistance, water retention value, and mechanical properties were also investigated. The results showed that casein was grafted onto the surface of the PAN fiber and the grafted PAN fiber presented better hygroscopicity compared with the untreated fiber. With proper tensile strength, the modified fiber could still meet the requirement for wearing. A mechanism was proposed to explain the deposit of casein on the synthetic acrylic fiber.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), which have been developed for their high mechanical properties, are insufficient to secure machinery. This paper investigates the use of magnetic abrasive finishing methods and the characteristics of surface roughness for mirror machining of CFRP. The cylindrical surface of CFRP was ground using a diamond paste with sizes of 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 6${\mu}m$. Consequently, an effective surface roughness of 0.03${\mu}m(R_a)$ could be obtained via a paste size of 0.5${\mu}m$. The surface roughness was not improved due to epoxy abrasion between the carbon fiber and the epoxy.
We developed a simultaneous strain measurement and damage detection technique using a pair of surface-mounted piezoelectric transducers and a fiber connecting them. This is a novel sensor configuration of the fiber acoustic wave (FAW) piezoelectric transducer. In this study, lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) transducers are installed conventionally on a plate's surface, which is a technique used in many structural health monitoring studies. However, our PZTs are also connected with an optical fiber. A FAW and Lamb wave are simultaneously guided in the optical fiber and the structure, respectively. The dependency of the time-of-flight of the FAW on the applied strain is quantified for strain sensing. In our experimental results, the FAW exhibited excellent linear behavior and no hysteresis with respect to the change in strain. On the other hand, the well-known damage detection function of the surface-mounted PZT transducers was still available by monitoring the waveform change in the conventional Lamb wave ultrasonic path.
The purpose of this study was to improved the durability of a improved movable weir by replacing the improved movable weir's metal gate with a hybrid steel/glass fiber reinforced polymer composites panel gate. Because the metal gate of a improved movable weir is always in contact with water, its service life is shortened by corrosion. This study made four type of hybrid steel/glass fiber reinforced polymer composites panel gate with different steel gate surface deformation (control, sand blast, scratch and hole), flexural. Fracture properties tests were performed depending on the steel gate surface deformation. According to the test results, the flexural behavior, flexural strength and fracture properties of hybrid steel/glass fiber reinforced polymer composites panel gate was affected by the steel panel gate surface deformation. Also, the sand blast type hybrid steel/glass fiber reinforced polymer composites panel gate shows vastly superior flexural and fracture performance compared to other types.
The rapid growth of zinc-oxide (ZnO) nanostructures (NSs) on woven carbon fiber (WCF) is reported in this study employing a microwave-aided chemical bath deposition process. The effects of different process parameters such as molar concentration, microwave duration and microwave power on morphologies and growth rate of the ZnO on WCF were studied. Furthermore, an attempt has been taken to study influence of different type of growth solutions on ZnO morphologies and growth rates. The surface functionalization of WCF fabrics is achieved by successful growth of crystalline ZnO on fiber surface in a very short duration through one-step microwave synthesis. The morphological, structural and compositional studies of ZnO-modified WCF are evaluated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy respectively. Good amount of zinc and oxygen has been seen in the surface of WCF. The presence of the wurtzite phase of ZnO having crystallite size 30-40 nm calculated using the Debye Scherrer method enhances the surface characteristics of WCF fabrics. The UV-VIS spectroscopy is used to investigate optical properties of ZnO-modified WCF samples by absorbance, transmittance and reflectance spectra. The variation of different parameters such as dielectric constants, optical conductivity, refractive index and extinction coefficient are examined that revealed the enhancement of optical characteristics of carbon fiber for wide applications in optoelectronic devices, carbon fiber composites and photonics.
In order to analyse the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to the wavelength of ultraviolet rays and evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface resistivity, surface potential decay, and ESCA spectrum respectively. As irradiation energy are increased, the surface properties were steeply decreased in the range of 300[nm]. But the measured values within the scope of400[nm]∼440[nm] showed a increase as compared with the untreated ones. Also, fromthe result of ESCA spectrum, it was confirmed plenty of oxygen groups on the spot showing the maximum decrease of surface properties and the existence of ether groups on the surface of coloring phase. We can conclude that the degradation phenomena on the surface of epoxy composites are dominated by the induction of ester and carboxyl groups.
The physicochemical properties of stainless steel fibers which were modified by oxygen plasma treatment were analyzed through microscopy and XPS analysis. The wettability of the surface of the stainless steel fiber was observed by measuring water contact angle to find out the effect of the plasma treatment time on the surface characteristics of the stainless steel fiber. In addition, in order to understand the effect of oxygen plasma treatment on the deterioration of the stainless steel fiber properties, the physical properties due to plasma treatment was investigated by measuring the weight reduction, tensile strength, elongation, tensile modulus of the stainless steel fibers according to the treatment time. As a result, the stainless steel fiber surface was etched by the oxygen plasma and the surface became more wettable by the introduction of hydrophilic functional groups. However the physical properties of the stainless steel fiber were not significantly deteriorated even if the surface of the stainless steel fiber made hydrophilic.
Two kinds of sea-island type polyester ultramicro fibers (fiber fineness : 0.01 and 0.05 denier) were treated with NaOH varying time and concentration. Surface morphology of the treated fibers with alkaline weight loss was observed by SEM. The treated effects were investigated by measuring density, melting temperature, and X-ray diffraction patterns. The surface morphology of the polyester ultramicro fiber was changed by NaOH concentration. Weight loss of 0.01d fiber was much larger than that of 0.05d fiber. Density and crystallinity were increased with weight loss of fiber. After the weight loss had finished, the density and crystallinity were decreased because of attack of island partition of the fiber. A melting temperature$(T_m)$ is $250^{circ}$ at untreated fiber on the whole and in 0.05d fiber the $(T_m)$ is $252^{circ}$ at untreated. In 0.01d fiber the $(T_m)$ was increased with weight loss of fiber.
