In order to investigate the effect of Lycii Radicis Cortex on hyperlipidemia, experimental studies were performed on hyperlipidemia rats. Hyperlipidemia model (controll group) was induced by 1% cholesterol fed-diet for 8 weeks. Sample I group fed with 1% cholesterol and 4% Lycii Radicis Cortex diet for 8 weeks. Sample II group fed with 1% cholesterol and 8% Lycii Radicis Cortex diet for 8 weeks. The contents of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid, phospholipid, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were measured, and fat accumulation in liver and the change of elastic and collagenous fiber in aortic wall were observed. The results were summurized as follows ; 1. The content of total cholesterol in the serum compared with control group tended to be decreased in sample group, but did not show a significance. 2. The content of triglyceride in the serum compared with control group tended to be decreased in sample group, and then sample II group showed a significant value. 3. The content of free fat acid in the serum compared with control group tended to be decreased in sample group, and then sample II group showed a significant value. 4. The content of phospholipid in the serum compared with control group tended to be decreased in sample group, but did not show a significance. 5. The content of HDL-cholesterol in the serum compared with control group tended to be increased in sample group, and then sample I group showed a significant value. 6. The content of LDL-cholesterol in the serum compared with control group tended to be decreased in sample group, and then sample I group showed a significant value. 7. The lipophagy in liver compared with control group tended to be decreased in sample group. 8. The change of elastic and collagenous fiber lesion in tunica media of aortic wall, compared with control group tended to be decreased in sample group. According to the above results, it is assumed that Lycii Radicis Cortex has a valid effect on hyperlipidemia. Therefore, it seems to be applicable to the diseases related to hyperlipidemia.

In this study, the frequency properties of electrostatic capacity and dielectric loss for the samples with different types of filler has been measured in through the applied frequency range of 7 kHz ~3,000 kHz at temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$. The results of this study are as follows. When the sample is degradated at the temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$ and the frequency range of 7 kHz ~3,000 kHz is applied, It found that the electrostatic capacity of the sample with Polyimide film is larger than the sample with Grass fiber. It found that the dielectric loss for the sample with Polyimide film is larger than the sample with Grass fiber with increasing frequency and temperature in the $80^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$ range. Also, the dielectric loss decreased with increasing frequency. In case of the sample with Polyimide film, It found that the electrostatic capacity decreased with increasing temperature, and the dielectric loss gradually decreased with increasing frequency.
This study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical properties of the ethanol extracts and soluble dietary fiber from Cassia tora L. seed. The proximate composition of Cassia tora, soluble solid contents, color intensity and contents of emodin and rhein of Cassia tora extract, molecular mass distribution, sugar contents and viscosity of soluble fiber from Cassia tora were analyzed. Cassia tora contains 12.6% of moisture, 5.2% of ash, 13.4% of crude protein, 7.2% of crude fat, 8.8% of insoluble fiber and 48.3% of soluble fiber. The effects of extract condition on soluble solid contents, color intensity and contents of emodin and rhein of Cassia tora extract were investigated. The soluble solid contents were higher in 70% or 50% ethanol extracts than those in 100% ethanol extracts and showed highest value in grind sample extracts. In Hunter's color value, 100% ethanol extracts and whole Cassia tora sample extracts were higher in L and b value, but on the contrary, were lower in a value, than those of the other. The highest emodin and rhein contents were observed in 70% and 50% ethanol extracts, respectively, and showed higher value in room temperature extracts than in heating extracts. The molecular mass of soluble fiber from Cassia tora seed was estimated by gel filtration chromatography. Most soluble fiber(80%) exhibited a molecular mass range of between 50~2000 kDa. The major sugars of soluble fiber from Cassia tora seed were identified as xylose, mannose and galactose. The apparent viscosity of 0.5% soluble fiber from Cassia tora seed was 33 mPas showing a higher value than pectin or xanthan gum.

Silk fibroin (SF) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and their application as an enzyme immobilization support was attempted. By varying the concentration of SF dope solution the diameter of SF nanofiber was controlled. The SF nanofiber web had high capacity of enzyme loading, which reached to $5.6\;wt\%$. The activity of immobilized a-chymotrypsin (CT) on SF nanofiber was 8 times higher than that on silk fiber and it increased as the fiber diameter decreased. Sample SF8 (ca. 205 nm fiber diameter) has excellent stability at $25^{\circ}C$ by retaining more than $90\%$ of initial activity after 24 hours, while sample SF11 (ca. 320 nm fiber diameter) shows higher stability in ethanol, retaining more than $45\%$ of initial activity. The formation of multipoint attachment between enzyme and support might increase the stability of enzyme. From these results, it is expected that the electrospun SF nanofibers can be used as an excellent support for enzyme immobilization.
The purpose of this study was to process bio-active glass ceramic composite, reinforced with sapphire fibers, by hot press. Also to study the interface of the matrix and the sapphire fiber, and the mechanical properties. Glass raw materials melted in Pt crucible at 1300$^{\circ}C$ during 3.5 hours. The melt was crushed in ball mill and then crushed material, ground and sieved to $<40{\beta}{\mu}m$. Sapphire fibers cut (30mm) and aligned. Powder and fibers hot pressed. The micrographs show good bonding between the matrix and the fiber and no porosity in the glass matrix. This means ideal fracture phenomena. Glass is fractured before the fiber. This is indication of good fracture strength. EDXS showing aluminum rich phase and crystalline phase. Bright field image of the matrix showing crystalline phase. Also diffraction pattern of TEM showing the crystalline phase and more than one phase. Strength of the samples was determined by 3 point bend testing. Strength of the 10vol% sample was approximately 69MPa, while strength of the control sample is 35MPa. Conclusions through this study as follow: 1. Micrographs show no porosity in the glass matrix and the interface. 2. The interface between the fiber and the glass matrix show no gaps. 3. Fracture of the glass indicates characteristic fiber-matrix separation. 4. Presence of crystalline phase at high processing temperature. 5. Sapphire is compatible with bioactive glass.

We propose a measurement method for evaluating constituent contents of carbon fiber/epoxy composites through a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The sample used in the test was taken from a strand specimen made of carbon fiber/epoxy tow prepreg, and the change in weight of the sample over time was measured in real time. Using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), we examine the thermal damage condition of the carbon fiber depending on whether resin was removed or not. We find that it was possible to test even a small amount of sample when using TGA vis-à-vis using a conventional muffle furnace. In addition, TGA enables the temperature and exposure time to be controlled, allowing the constituent contents of composite materials to be efficiently and quantitatively evaluated.
Fiber fineness characteristics are important for yarn production and quality. In this paper, degummed bast fibers such as hemp, flax and ramie have been examined with the Optical Fiber Diameter Analyzer (OFDA100 and OFDA2000) systems for fiber fineness, in comparison with the conventional image analysis and the Wira airflow tester. The correlation between the results from these measurements was analysed. The results indicate that there is a significant linear co-relation between the fiber fineness measurement results obtained from those different systems. In addition, the mean fiber width and its coefficient of variation obtained from the OFDA100 system are smaller than those obtained from the OFDA2000 system, due to the difference in sample preparation methods. The OFDA2000 system can also measure the fiber fineness profile along the bast fiber plants, which can be useful for plant breeding.

This paper reports an improved headspace gas chromatographic method for the determination of carboxyl group content in wood fibers. Pretreatment of wood fibers was applied using dilute HCl to convert carboxyl groups to carboxylic acid groups and then using deionized water to wash fiber samples thoroughly. The samples were finally air dried. Sodium bicarbonate solution was used to react with carboxylic acid groups of the pretreated fibers in a closed testing vial to release carbon dioxide. The content of carboxyl groups in fibers was accurately quantified by determining the amount of carbon dioxide released by a headspace gas chromatograph equipped with a thermal conductivity detector. The modified process for fiber sample pretreatment increased the reliability and accuracy in measuring carboxylic acid groups. The present method is simple, accurate.

The purpose of this study is to quantify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas sample using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled to GC analysis. The optimal HS-SPME conditions was CAR/PDMS fiber and 30 min absorprion time for the analysis of various VOCs. In optimal conditions, 80 VOCs could be detected within 1 ppbv and even less than 0.0005 ppbv especially in the case of BTEX. However, fiber reproducibility on adsorption efficiency was 1~9.2% (between the same fiber) and 5.9~13.5% (between the other fiber). We successfully determined 35 VOCs in landfill gas with this method and found that VOCs of high concentration are emitting from vent pipe of closed/open landfill site under the HS-SPME conditions. This method may apply to VOCs/odor determination from various atmospheric environmental samples as well as landfills.
We have constructed and analyzed the performance of a simple fiber bundle multi-focal microscope. The microscope had a fiber bundle substituted for micro-lens array that is the core part of MMM(multi-focal multi-photon microscope). The MMM is a type of confocal microscope. To analyze the performance and characteristics of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscope, three types of samples were used: a standard grating, USAF 1951(7, 3), and 1951(7, 6). Using two polarizers and a polarizing beam splitter, we eliminated noise and got clear images. We obtained the FWHM of fiber spot images with the standard grating using two different magnifier lenses which were 63X and 20X, and found an image of the sample as a distribution of fiber spot images. For this case we used the low magnification lens, which gives denser distribution, so that we could get clearer images. In order to test the resolution of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system, we used the USAF 1951 sample which has a smaller line interval than that of the standard grating. The FWHM of the line width of the image coincides well with the real line width of the USAF 1951 sample. We confirmed the performance of a fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system which is relatively simple but has submicron resolution and is able to get 1600 images at the same time.
