As the technique to remove Paraloid B-72, which is known as an irreversible material, the method using organic solvent and heating, though the ways vary depending on the kind of material to be removed, has been usually used, but it has yet to apply to mud mural because of the technical limit in processing and the potential risk of damage and, moreover, the removal efficiency which also remains unproven. Thus, in a bid to seek the way to safely remove Paraloid B-72 contained in mural, the test was conducted in a way of applying a compress method, which is deemed most efficient. The solvents which are proven to be Paraloid B-72 were applied to the absorbents such as active carbon fiber and methyl cellulose and then were eluted to the surface of mud mural sample which was prepared in the same size and condition for a certain time before evaluating the stability and removal efficiency. Such test was intended to identify the applicability to the mural of Mireukjeon Hall at Geunsansa Temple, which had been treated with Paraloid B-72 for preservation in the past. As a result, the way of mixing the absorbent such as active carbon fiber and Xylene alone or with other quick vaporable solvents proved to be most efficient in removing Paraloid B-72 from mud mural and particularly Acetone:Xylene(1:1wt%) was found to be the most stable among others. Such a test outcome is expected to be a useful data for removing Paraloid B-72 from the mural of Mireukjeon Hall at Geunsansa Temple as well as for restoring other mural cultural assets in the coming days.
The adhesive strength can be improved through surface treatment. The most common method is to improve physical bonding by varying the surface conditions. This study presents the effect of laser surface treatment on the adhesive strength of CFRP. The surface roughness was patterned using a 1064 nm laser. The effects of the number of laser shots and the direction and length of the pattern on the adhesion of the CFRP/CFRP single joint were investigated through tensile tests. Tests according to ASTM D5868 were performed, and the bonding mechanism was determined by analyzing the damaged surface after a fracture. The optimized number of the laser shots and the optimized depth of the roughness should be required to increase the bonding strength on the CFRP surface. When considering the shear stress in the tensile direction, the roughness pattern in the direction of 45° that increases the length of the fracture path in the adhesive layer resulted in an increase of the adhesive strength. The surface treatment of the bonding surface using a laser is a suitable method to acquire a mechanical bonding mechanism and improve the bonding strength of the CFRP bonding joint. The study on the optimized laser process parameters is required for utilizing the benefits of laser surface processing.
In this experiment, an α-Al2O3 ceramic hollow fiber was used as a support, and a hydrogen membrane plated with Pd and Pd-Ag was manufactured through electroless plating. The Pd-Ag membrane was annealed at 500℃ for 10 h to form an alloy of Pd and Ag. It was confirmed that it became a Pd-Ag alloy through EDS (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) analysis. Also, the thickness of the Pd, Pd-Ag plating layer was measured to be about 8.98 and 9.29 ㎛ through SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) analysis respectively. Hydrogen permeation experiment was performed using the H2 gas and mixed gas (H2 and N2) in the range of 350~450℃ and 1-4 bar using the prepared hydrogen membrane. Under the H2 gas condition, the Pd and Pd-Ag membrane has a flux of up to 21.85 and 13.76 mL/cm2·min and also separation factors of 1216 and 361 were obtained in the mixed gas at 450℃ and 4 bar conditions respectively.
Using non-destructive analytical methods, we identified the material characteristics of two gold fabric artifacts excavated from the Cheongsong Sim clan (Bugeum Wonsam, Jikgeum Chima), including the artifact condition, fiber type, surface contamination, and metallic threads. We found that the artifacts were buried and had turned brown; thus, we were unable to determine their original color. The fiber type was determined to be silk from cocoons, based on scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses of Amide I, II, III, and IV peaks, and color reactions Further, the FT-IR and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses identified the white and black stains as natural resin hydrolyzed substances, such as lipids and proteins, that occurred as microbial decomposition due to body decay. Finally, the XRF analyses identified the thin gold layer of the metallic yarn as gold (Au). According to the FT-IR data and the color reaction to the metallic yarn medium, the adhesive component of the medium was a product of-Amides I, II, III, and 3000 cm-1 within Amides A and B (an animal type), respectively. Thus, the medium was identified as Hanji (Korean paper), which is made from domestically produced Broussonetia kazinoki fibers.
The stacking configuration of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, achieved via the filament winding process, exhibits distinct variations compared to conventional FRP composite stacking arrangements. Consequently, it becomes challenging to ascertain the influence of mechanical properties based on the typical stacking structures. Thus, it becomes imperative to enhance the mechanical behavior and optimize the interleaved structures to improve overall performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of incorporating amorphous halloysite nanotubes (A-HNTs) within different layers of five unique layer arrangements on the low-velocity impact properties of interleaved carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) structures. The low-velocity impact characteristics of the laminate were validated using a drop weight impact test, wherein the resulting impact damage modes and extent of damage were compared and evaluated under microscopic analysis. Each interleaved structure laminate according to whether nanoparticles are added was compared at impact energies of 10 J and 15 J. In the case of 10 J, the absorption energy showed a similar tendency in each structure. However, at 15 J, the absorption energy varies from structure to structure. Among them, a structure in which nanoparticles are not added exhibits the highest absorption energy. Additionally, various impact fracture modes were observed in each structure through optical microscopy.
Iron oxide nanoparticles were microencapsulated using fibroin, a protein polymer of silk fiber, for theragnostic applications. The content of iron oxide was determined to be 4.28% by thermogravimetric analysis and 5.11% by magnetometer. A suspension of murine fibroblast 3T3 cells grown in medium supplemented with iron oxide-microcapsules turned clear in response to the magnetic force and the cells aggregated to the magnet direction. Neodymium magnets placed on the top of the culture dish, and attracted cells to the center of the culture surface. The cells collected on the culture surface aggregated to form a rough spheroid of 2 mm in a diameter after 72 h. In the outer layer of the cell aggregate, cells were relatively large and gathered together to form a dense tissue, but the central part was observed to undergo cell death due to the mass transfer restriction. In the outer layer, iron oxide-microcapsules were lined up like chains in the direction of magnetic force. Using microCT, it was demonstrated that the iron oxides inside the cell aggregate were not evenly distributed but biased to the magnetic direction.
In past, dye diffusion and dyeing rate in fibers have been emphasized in dyeing phenomena. However, in the light of the properties of colloids in the surface of disperse phase and dispersion, there exist specific characters such as adsorption or electric double layer, which seems to play important roles in determining the physiochemical properties in the dyeing system. Electrostatic bonding, hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals adsorption are common in dyeing as well as covalent bonding. Particularly, electrostatic bonding is premised on the existance of ionic radicals in fibers. The present study was aimed to clarify the electrokinetic phenomena of dyeing through the role of electric double layer by ion in amphoteric fibers with different ionic effects under different pH. Spectrophotometric analysis method was used to compare dyeing condition of surface, which can be detected by electrokinetic phenomena and the inner of fibers after deceleration of dyed fibers. Nylon and wool, the typical amphoteric fibers were dyed with monoazo acid dyes such as C.I. Acid Orange 20, and C.I. Acid Orange 10. Various combinations were prepared by combining pH, temperature and dye concentration, in order to generate streaming electric potential which were measured by microvolt meter and specific conductivity meter. The results were transformed to zeta potential by Helmholtz-Smoluchowski formular and to surface electric charge density by Suzawa formular, surface dye amount, and effective surface area of fibers. The amount of dyes of inner fibers were also measured by the Lambert-Beer’s law. The main results obtained are as follows. 1. By measuring zeta pontential, it was possible to detect the dyeing mechanism, surface charge density, surface dye amount and effective surface area concerning dye adsorption of the amphoteric fibers. 2. Zeta pontential increases in negative at low pH and high dye concentration in the process of dyeing. This implied that there existed ionic bond formation in the dyeing mechanism between acid dyes and amphoteric fibers. 3. Dibasic acid dye had little changing rate in zeta potential due to the difference in solubility of dye and in number of dissociated ions per dye molecule to bond with amino radicals of amphoteric fibers. The dye adsorption of mono basic acid dye was higher than that of dibasic acid dye. 4. The effective surface areas concerning dyeing were $6.3E+05\;cm^2/g$ in nylon, $1.6E+07\;cm^2/g$ in wool fiber being higher order of wool then nylon.
Recently, in this department, pressure-displacement curve and breaking tension of dog and human tympanic membrane were studied using intact, fresh or dried tympanic membrane attached to external auditory meatus. However, physical property, proper elasticity-Young Modulus, of the tympanic membrane has not been clarified yet. Present study is attempted to further clarify proper Young Modulus of tympanic membrane, and to distinguish possible difference between layer of stratum radiatum and layer of stratum circulare of tympanic membrane in breaking tension and in Young Modulus. Tympanic membrane was excised from sacrificed dog, and preparation was made into the size of approximately 1 mm in width and 3 mm in length. In fresh or dried tympanic membrane, which was dried at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs., some preparations were made along the long axis parallel to the fibers of radial direction, and others were made along the long axis perpendicular to the radial fibers-circular direction. Breaking tension and displacement according to loading, were measured and Young Modulus was calculated in tympanic membrane preparations under the different experimental conditions. Results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Young Modulus of fresh tympanic membrane in radial direction was $6.57{\times}10^8\;dyne/cm^2$, and that of fresh preparation in circular direction was $1.68{\times}10^8\;dyne/cm^2$. The Young Modulus of fresh tympanic membrane in radial direction resembles to that of silk and whale moustache. In dried tympanic membrane, Young Modulus of preparation of radial direction was $30.2{\times}10^8\;dyne/cm^2$ and that of preparation in circular direction was $25.0{\times}10^8\;dyne/cm^2$. 2. Breaking tension of fresh tympanic membrane was 44.9 gm/mm in radial preparation, and 7.9 gm/mm in circular preparation. In dried tympanic membrane, breaking tension was 46.7 gm/mm in preparation of radial direction, and 17.2 gm/mm in preparation of circular direction. 3. Much smaller breaking tension of the circular preparation-one fifth to the radial preparation-seemed to be responsible for the higher incidence of circular fiber breaking in tympanic membrane performation caused by trauma or sudden change in atmospheric pressure. 4. The correlation seemed to be very close between breaking tension and Young Modulus in tympanic membrane.

To investigate morphological characteristics of zephyr produced from two bamboo species, Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis and Gigantochloa apus, basic anatomic properties were examined by scanning electron microscopy and image analysis. According to SEM observation, zephyr from Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis was not of uniform in shape and showed macro crack between vascular bundle sheaths. This may be attributes to the sclerenchymatous fibers connected closely, thus resulting in difficult separation of intercellular layer. Zephyr from Gigantochloa apus was of uniform in shape, which may be caused by easy separation of intercellular layer of sclerenchymatous fibers having thin cell wall and large cell lumen. By image analysis in cross section of two species, the ratio of vascular bundle sheaths and cell wall ratio of sclerenchymatous fibers were examined. The ratio of vascular bundle sheaths in Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis was lower than that in Gigantochloa apus. However, cell wall ratio of sclerenchymatous fibers in Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis was higher than that in Gigantochloa apus.
To investigate the delignification behaviour in solvolysis pulping process, Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa H. and Pinus Kuraiensis S. et Z. were cooked with p-cresol and vater solvent(2:8, 5:5, 8:2 v/v) at $175^{\circ}C$ for 9 cooking time levels(20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, min). Pulp yield, residual lignin content, de lignification rate, decarborhydration rate were determined. Delignification behaviours were analyzed by TEM. 1. The p-cresol-water solvent cooking of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa showed good delignification at the solvent system which the mixture ratio of p-cresol and water were 2:8(v/v), while the cooking of P. koraiensis with the p-cresol and water mixture ratio of 5:5 was no good. 2. P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa showed three step-delignification phenomena at the solvent system which the mixture ratio of p-cresol and water were 2:8(v/v) anti 5:5(v/v). But P. koraiensis showed a first order delignification reaction at the same mixture ratio of p-cresol and water solvent system. 3. In TEM micrograph obtained for the solvent system which the mixture ratio of p-cresol and water was 5:5(v/v), the partial delignification of the cell corner of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa and P. koraiensis were observed at 60min. of cooking time. Complete delignification at the cell corner of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa was observed at 160min. and that of P. koraiensis was observed of 180min. of cooking time. 4. In optical microscopic observation, fiber separation of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa occured at 120min. and that of P. koraiensis began at 140min. of cooking time. 5. At the solvent system which the mixture ratio of p-cresol and water was 5:5(v/v), middle layer on secondary wall($S_2$) and cell corner of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa were more selectively delignified than primary wall(P) and outer layer on secondary wall($S_1$). However P. koraiensis did not showed any difference in delignification between cell wall layers and cell corner.
