  • The current study focuses on the assessment and interface response of reinforced concrete elements with composite materials (carbon fiber reinforced polymers-CFRPs, glass fiber reinforced polymers-GFRPs, textile reinforced mortars-TRM's, near surface mounted bars-NSMs). A description of the transfer mechanisms from concrete elements to the strengthening materials is conducted through analytical models based on failure modes: plate end interfacial debonding and intermediate flexural crack induced interfacial debonding. A database of 55 in total reinforced concrete columns (scale 1:1) is assembled containing elements rehabilitated with various techniques (29 wrapped with CFRP's, 5 wrapped with GFRP's, 4 containing NSM and 4 strengthened with TRM). The failure modes are discussed together with the performance level of each technique as well as the efficiency level in terms of ductility and bearing/ bending capacity. The analytical models' results are in acceptable agreement with the experimental data and can predict the failure modes. Despite the heterogeneity of the elements contained in the aforementioned database the results are of high interest and point out the need to incorporate the analytical expressions in design codes in order to predict the failure mechanisms and the limit states of bearing capacities of each technique.

  • As part of this study, has been developed a numerical method which allows to establish abacuses connecting the normal force with bending moment for a circular section and therefore to predict the rupture of this type of section. This may be for reinforced concrete (traditional steel) or concrete reinforced with steel fibers. The numerical simulation was performed in nonlinear elasticity up to exhaustion of the bearing capacity of the section. The rupture modes considered occur by plasticization of the steel or rupture of the concrete (under compressive stresses or tensile stresses). Regarding the fiber-reinforced concrete, the rupture occurs, usually, by tearing of the fibers. The behavior laws of the different materials (concrete and steel) correspond to the real behavior. The influence of several parameters was investigated, namely; diameter of the section, concrete strength, type of steel, percentage of reinforcement and contribution of concrete in tension between two successive cracks of bending. A comparison was made with the behavior of a section considering the conventional diagrams of materials; provided by the BAEL rules. A second comparative study was performed for fibers reinforced section.

  • The box girder was developed using polymer concrete, box girder were made for flexural behavior evaluation. The box girder was reinforced with reinforcing steel bars and fiber glass roving cloths. Failure loads were 13.5 tons and 16.6tons for steel reinforced girder and fiber glass reinforced girder, respectively. Especially for the fiber glass reinforced girder, the shape was not changed even after failure. It is expected that application of this idea will be useful for developing under ground box, girder, utility tunnel, small stream bridge box, etc.

  • Nowadays, as to increased the workability of the press concrete and decrease the cracking, the fiber-reinforced admixture has been widely used. As the low adhesion force between the paste and fiber-reinforced admixture, it was considered as could not be used in the structure. Even more, as the loss of flowability and the exposure of the fiber, further study is needed. In this study, as the different environment and position of the building, the dosages of the fiber-reinforced admixture has also been changed. The fundamental properties and cracking of fiber-reinforced concrete have been tested.

  • PURPOSES: As pavement generally provides service shorter than an expected life cycle, maintenance cost increases gradually. In order to help extending the service life and reduce maintenance cost, a new multi-functional composite pavement system is being developed in Korea. METHODS: This study is a part to develop the multi-functional composite pavement and is to investigate the mechanical performances of fiber-reinforced lean concrete for pavement subbase. The inherent problem of fiber reinforced concrete is dispersion of fibers in concrete mix. This study additionally evaluated fiber dispersion characteristics with respect to different fiber types. RESULTS: From the test results, the compressive strengths of the concretes satisfied the required limit of 5MPa at 7days. The standard deviation of the measured number of fibers were lower in the order of nylon, steel fiber and polypropylene. CONCLUSIONS: Reject ash was shown to be satisfactory as a replacement material to Portland cement in lean concrete base. The fiber volume fraction is suggested to be 0.4% even though the fracture toughness did not vary significantly with respect to fiber types. However, fracture energy absorbed up to complete failure increased with the increased fiber volume fraction increment.

  • In this study, to understand mechanical characteristic of hybrid reinforced concrete by PVA-fiber 6 mm and PP-fiber 50 mm, which are organic fiber replaced macro-fiber with PP-fiber, four mixed Hybrid Organic Fibers Reinforced Concrete (HFRC) is compared with one mixed plain concrete without fiber reinforcement. Volume portion of the fibers are limited under one percent. The result presents that hybrid reinforcement of the organic fibers cannot maximize stiffness and ductility behavior of the steel fiber reinforcement. however, in comparison to plain concrete, it is confirmed that meaningful relation between toughness index and equivalent flexural strength with advanced ductility behavior. Also, in the case of concrete hybrid reinforced by organic fiber, when the volume portion of the fiber increases, ductility also increases. PP-fiber, which is macro fiber, has more effect on the flexural behavior of concrete than PVA-fiber, which is micro fiber, does. The result also shows that it decrease chloride penetration in chloride penetration test.

  • Steel fibers are added to concrete to improve energy absorption, impact resistance and apparent ductility, and to provide crack resistance and crack control. This study is to investigate the toughness index and post-crack equivalent tensile strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete properties on the load-deflection behaviors of the steel fiber reinforced concrete beam model specimens.

  • In this study, unsaturated polyester resin, artificial lightweight coarse aggregate, artificial lightweight fine aggregate, heavy calcium carbonate and steel fiber were used to produce a steel fiber-reinforced lightweight polymer concrete with which mechanical properties were examined. Results of this experimental study showed that the flexural strength of unnotched steel fiber-reinforced lightweight polymer concrete increased from 8.61 to 13.96 MPa when mixing ratio of fiber content increased from 0 to 1.5%. Stress intensity factors($K_{IC}$) increased with increasing fiber content ratio while it did not increase with increasing notch ratio. Energy release rate ($G_{IC}$) turned out to depend upon the notch size, and it increased with increasing steel fiber content.

  • Organic fiber reinforced concrete is applicable to many applications for construction material. In general, organic fibers have low tensile strength and elastic modulus, but they have many advantages such as high crack resistance, impact resistance, chemical resistance, flexural behavior and corrosion resistance. In this study, hybrid organic fibers were prepared by mixing polyamide (PA) fibers and high strength polyester (PET) fibers. Then, flexural performance test of fiber reinforced concrete containing hybrid organic fiber was performed. The energy absorption capacity of the hybrid organic fiber reinforced concrete was evaluated.

  • Investigations on the behavior of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams with shear confinement are accomplished to determine their ultimate shear strength including diagonal tension strength. The parameters varied were the shear confinement ratio(Ps), and fiber volume fraction(Vs). Ultimate shear strength increased significantly in steel fiber reinforced concrete beam without shear confinement. In steel- fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams with shear confinement, there is no increase of ultimate shear strength but shows much beneficial effects of Ductility Capacity.
