  • The aims of this study were to determine mechanical properties of steel-fiber reinforced concrete under splitting tensile, flexural and compressive loading, and thus to improve the possible applications of concrete. The major factors experimentally investigated in this study were the fiber content and the length and the diameter of fibers. The major results obtained are summarized as follows : 1.The strength, strain, elastic modulus and energy obsorption capability of steel-fiber reinforced concrete under splitting tensile loading were significantly improved by increasing the fiber content or the aspect ratio. 2.The flexural strength, central deflection, and flexural toughness of steel4iber reinforced beams were significantly improved by increasing the fiber content or the aspect ratio. And flexural behavior characteristic was good at the aspect ratio of about 60 to 75. 3.The strength, strain, and energy absorption capability in compression were increased with the increase of the fiber content. These effects were not so sensitive to the aspect ratio. The energy absorption capability was improved only slightly with the increase of the fiber length. 4.The elastic modulus, transverse strains, and poisson's ratios in compression were not influenced by the fiber content. 5.The steel-fibers were considered to be appropriated as the materials covering the weakness of concrete because the mechanical properties of concrete in tension and flexure were significantly improved by steel-fiber reinforcement.

  • This study investigates the spatting properties of high strength concrete, $60\sim80MPa$ class, designed with diverse aspect ratios and fiber content of nylon(NY). Test showed that increase of fiber content and aspect ratio in concrete decreased the fluidity of fresh concrete, especially for 1580 and 3000 aspect ratio of fiber. As for the compressive and tensile strength, adding NY fiber did not significantly affect the values In the range of high strength. After completing the fire test, the specimens containing both 750 and 1000 aspect ratios of fiber protected the spatting occurrence even in 0.05vol.% of fiber content. This specimens indicated the residual compressive strength ratio at 37%, showing the most favorable value among other specimens. Therefore, it is demonstrated that to protect the spalling in high strength concrete considering the effective fluidity, strength and economic efficiency altogether, adding 0.05vol.% of NY fiber with 750 aspect ratio Is beneficial.

  • In this paper, material property of fiber reinforced concrete(FRC) according to the steel fiber, glass fiber and carbon fiber blended ratio. The fiber reinforced concretes are increased mechanical strength, because the fibers are dispersed with randomly direction and disturb crack progression in concretes. Adhesive fracture is occurred slowly at interface between fiber and concrete, and the fracture energy is absorbed due to softening phenomenon.

  • The mechanical properties of short carbon/glass fiber reinforced polypropylene are experimentally measured as functions of fiber content and nozzle diameter. Also, these properties are compared with the survival rate of reinforced fibers and fiber volume fraction using image analysis after pyrolytic decomposition. The survival rate of fiber aspect ratio as well as fiber volume fraction is influenced by injection processing condition, the used materials and mold conditions such as diameter of nozzle, etc. In this study, the survival rate of fiber aspect ratio is investigated by nozzle size variations in injection/mold sides. It is found that the survival rate of glass fiber is higher that the survival rate of glass fiber is higher than that of carbon fiber. Both tensile modulus and strength of short-fiber reinforced polypropylene are improved s the fiber volume fraction and nozzle diameter are increased.

  • This study was performed to ascertain the three-dimensional effect of the crack reduction and the restrained effect of crack growth, and to yield a suitable mixing ratio of the synthetic fiber reinforced soil. The results of the study are as follows ; 1) The synthetic fiber has the resisting force for crack because of the adhesion due to the attraction of soil particles. 2) As the synthetic fiber length and the mixing ratio are increased, mono filament synthetic fiber reinforced soil is increased the effects of crack reduction and the restraint of crack growth. 3) The fibrillated synthetic fiber is more effective than mono filament synthetic fiber for crack. 4) A suitable mixing ratio of synthetic fiber reinforced soil is 0.5% of the fibrillated synthetic fiber.

  • In this study, lignin/chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride)(CPVC) blended fibers have been produced for the development of low-cost carbon fiber. Carbon fiber manufacturing was accomplished through stabilization and carbonization process. The lignin/CPVC blended fibers were prepared by wet spinning method. Dimethylacetamid e(DMAc) and cychlohexanone in a ratio of 5:1(wt%) was employed as co-solvent. The ratio of lignin/CPVC was prepared at 0/10, 1/9, 2/8, 3/7, 4/6, and 5/5(wt%). The spinning solution was extruded at a rate of 0.1 to 0.4ml/min according to the blending ratio. The speed of the rollers was the same for all ratios(draw ratio=1). Analysis of fiber cross-section by scanning eletron microscopy(SEM) showed that as the lignin ratio increased in the same coagulation bath and distilled water, the pore size of the spinning fiber decreased. Therefore, the highest tensile strength of the blending fibers was 6.3±1.2MPa at the 5/5 ratio. The carbon fiber also showed the best tensile strength of 120.78±2.43MPa at 5/5 ratio.

  • Investigated whether fiber orientation distribution of twisted yarn composites and the fiber content are 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength and some correlation. Tensile strength of 0$^{\circ}$ directions of twisted yarn composites increased changelessly being proportional the fiber content and fiber orientation function get into anisotropic in isotropic. But, tensile strength ratio by separation of fiber filament of 90$^{\circ}$ directions tensile strength decreased when tensile load is imposed for width direction of reinforcement fiber. 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength ratio value of a twisted yarn composites not receive almost effect of the fiber content of fiber orientation function J = 0.4 lows. Although do, 20 wt% of the fiber content is high about 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength ratio about 1.6~2 than 10 wt% from J = 0.4. Therefore. could know that effect of the fiber content is dominate.

  • Thermo-mechanical behaviors of polymer matrix composite(PMC) with continuous TiNi fiber are studied using theoretical analysis with 1-D analytical model and numerical analysis with 2-D multi-fiber finite element(FE) model. It is found that both compressive stress in matrix and tensile stress in TiNi fiber are the source of strengthening mechanisms and thermo-mechanical coupling. Thermal expansion of continuous TiNi fiber reinforced PMC has been compared with various mechanical behaviors as a function of fiber volume fraction, degree of pre-strain and modulus ratio between TiNi fiber and polymer matrix. Based on the concept of so-called shape memory composite(SMC) with a permanent shape memory effect, the critical modulus ratio is determined to obtain a smart composite with no or minimum thermal deformation. The critical modulus ratio should be a major factor for design and manufacturing of SMC.

  • This study deals with the wire content, wire diameter, aspect ratio , it's arrangement of steel, wire fiber and the sorts of castable which affected the character of steel wire fiber reinformced refractory castable. Two kinds of alumina based refractory castables, one is for 1650℃ and the other is for 1800℃, and stainless steel which is SUS 304 type 0.25, 0.34 , 0.37 and 0.50m/min diameter were used respectively. Aspect ratio was adjusted to 50, 75, 100 and steel fiber content was also adjusted to 1-4wt% each. The results of the experiment were as follows : 1. At firing temperature around 1,000℃, MOR is increased with increasing wire content and aspect ratio with decreasing firing temperature, which depends on the Romualdi's Fiber Spacing Theory. But for calculation of the fiber spacing, Swamy equation is more a aplicable to the extensive fiber mixing conditions. However, the condition differs from the above at firing temperature around 1,350℃ ,because of the degradation of wire and the progress of sintering of castable. 2. Linear change is getting larger corresponding to the increase of wire content, and the spaling resistivity is increasing corresponding to the increase of wire content and to aspect ratio, and with decreasing wire diameter. 3. Firing shrinkage under load is getting greater as higher wire content, and the shrinkage of the test pieces which fiber is vertically oriented is getting greater than the test pieces which fiber is randomly oriented.
