  • Injection molding is the most widely used process for the industrial forming of plastic articles. During an injection molding process of composites, the fiber-matrix separation and fiber orientation are caused by the flow of molten polymer/fiber mixture. As a result, the product tends to be nonhomogeneous and anisotropic. Hence, it is very important to clarify the relations between separation·orientation and infection molding conditions. So far, there is no research on the measurement of fiber orientation using image processing. In this study, the effects of fiber content ratio and molding condition on the fiber orientation-angle distributions are studied experimentally. Using the image processing method, the fiber orientation distribution of welding parts in injection-molded products is assessed. And the effects of fiber content and injection mold shapes on the fiber orientation in case of fiber reinforced polymeric composites are studied. experimentally.

  • Characteristics of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic sheet depend on the quantity and shape of fibers. During a molding process of composites, the fiber-maxtrix separation and fober orientation are caused by the flow during the molding process. As a result, the product tends to be nonhomogeneous and anisotropic. Hence, it is very important to clarify the relations between separation-orientation and molding conditions. The correlation between the separation and the orientation have to be clarified for designing the fiber structure. In this paper, the degree of nonhomogeneity which is a measure of the separation is obtained using one-dimensional rectangular shaped part compression molding. And the orientation function is defined and measured by the image processing using soft X-rayed photograph and image scammer. Correlation between the degree of nonhomogeneity and the orientation function is discussed.

  • Short fiber reinforced composites manufactured by injection molding have diverse fiber orientations variable with measuring positions even in the same specimen, which is caused by the flow induced fiber orientation. Fiber orientations considerably affect the mechanical and thermal properties of final composite products. In this study, fiber orientation of injection molded carbon fiber reinforced PA6/PPO composite was measured at several points of the specimen by optical microscopy analysis and the corresponding izod impact strength, coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) were also measured to investigate the influence of local fiber orientation on the mechanical and thermal properties. Izod impact strength where fiber was perpendicular to the direction of crack propagation was higher than where fiber was parallel to the direction, which could be explained be the impact resistance reinforcing mechanism by fiber orientation. CTE was also lower where fiber was parallel to the measurement direction of CTE than where fiber was perpendicular to the direction, which could be also explained by the dimensional stability mechanism by fiber orientation.

  • To investigate accuracies between intensity method and count method for measurement of the fiber orientation distribution, fiber orientation function is derived by drawing simulation figure for the fiber orientation as varying fiber aspect ratio, fiber area ratio, and fiber orientation state, respectively. The values of fiber orientation function measured by intensity method and count method are compared with the calculated ones from simulation figures. The results show that measurement accuracy of fiber orientation angle distribution obtained by count method is by 4% higher than that by intensity method.

  • A new fiber orientation sensor has been developed and tested on an actual paper machine to demonstrate its capability to function as a real-time monitoring system. First, we demonstrate the ability of the sensor system to detect the change in the fiber orientation angle while the sensor head, and not the paper, was intentionally rotated from $-90^{\circ}\;to\;+70^{\circ}$ with respect to the paper-traveling direction. Next, we demonstrate that this system can successfully detect the change in the magnitude and angle of fiber orientation in running paper when the direction of material flow on the wire was changed on the paper machine. The angle and magnitude of fiber orientation were independently confirmed by SST and MOA measurements. Furthermore, we found that the system was capable of measuring the basis weight and the moisture content of running paper while detecting the angle and magnitude of fiber orientation.

  • During compression molding of fiber-reinforced polymeric composites, microstructural changes such as the fiber-matrix separation and the fiber orientation are occurred by the flow of composite materials. Since the nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of composites are caused by the separation and orientation of fibers. On the other hand, the separation and the orientation of fibers are inseparably related to each other. In this paper the degree of nonhomogeneity which is a measure of the separation is obtained using one-dimensional rectangular shaped part compression molding. And the orientation function is measured by the image processing using soft X-rayed photograph and image scanner. We study effects of the mold temperature on the degree of nonhomogeneity and the orientation function.

  • To evaluate the fiber orientation characteristics and estimate its effect on the flexural strength of steel fiber reinforced ultra high strength concrete with directions of concrete placing, we developed an image processing technique and carried out the flexural test to quantify the effect of fiber orientation characteristics on the flexural strength as well. The image processing technique developed in this study could evaluate quantitatively the fiber orientation property by the use of dispersion coefficient, the number of fibers in a unit area, and fiber orientation. It was also found that the fiber orientation characteristics were dependent on the direction of concrete placing. Fiber orientation characteristic was revealed to strongly affect the ultimate flexural strength, while hardly affecting the first cracking strength. Theoretical model for flexural strength was applied to compare with test results, which exhibited a good agreement.

  • The fiber contributes the high strength and modulus to the composite. The fiber orientation in FRP has a great effect on the strength of FRP because the strength of FRP mainly depends on the strength of fiber. In this study, FRP was made unidirectionally by pultrusion method and outer part of FRP was made by filament winding method to give fiber orientation to the FRP. The bending strength and bending stresses of FRP rods were simulated according to the winding orientation of glass fiber. The bending strength of FRP was also evaluated. The results of simulation and evaluation Were compared each other to investigate main stresses which affect the fracture of FRP. The main stresses which had a great effect on the strength of FRP were shear stresses.

  • Investigated whether fiber orientation situation of fiber reinforcement macromolecule composition board and the fiber inclusion rate are perpendicular and horizontal direction tensile strength and some correlation. Fiber orientation situation of tensile strength of 0 direction of composition board increased changelessly by aeolotropy in isotropy. Tensile strength of 90 direction that is isotropy and tensile strength of 0 direction that is aeolotropy agreed almost. Get into aeolotropy, the reinforcement rate of fiber decreased. When load interacts for width direction of reinforcement.
