  • A high sensitivity fiber optic temperature sensor based on a side-polished fiber (SPF) coupled to a tapered multimode overlay waveguide (MMOW) is proposed and studied. Both tapered and non-tapered MMOW were considered to study the effect of tapering of MMOW on the characteristics of the device and to investigate the criticality of the uniformity of the multimode overlay waveguide over the SPF. Present study shows that tapering of the MMOW can be used to tune the desired wavelength range without any loss in the sensitivity. Sensitivity up to 9 nm/$^{\circ}C$ within the temperature range of 25 to $100^{\circ}C$ can be achieved with the proposed sensor, almost 6 times higher compared even to state-of-the-art high-sensitivity grating-based fiber optic temperature sensors.

  • We have proposed and demonstrated a rotation angle sensor based on the stress -optic effect of a fused fiber coupler whose transmission spectrum is altered by the torsional stress. The peak of transmission spectrum was shifted to longer wavelength region with rotation of the coupler. The rotation angle sensor revealed reproducibility and symmetric behavior with respect to the rotation direction. The sensitivity of the sensor was 0.367 [nm/degee].

  • To detect external acoustic signal, fiber optic sensor array using Fabry-Perot interferometer which had benefit of minimize and light-weight was used. The sensor head has 1cm in length, total length of fiber is 9.5cm, and the sensor supported at both ends, simply. External sound applied in lateral direction and detected two signals were compared each other. It was confirmed that the Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor array detected acoustic signal, effectively.

  • Fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor was developed to be able to detect intrusion effect through several ten kilometer optical fiber. Fiber optic BOTDA sensor was constructed with 1 laser diode and 2 electro-optic modulators. The intrusion detection experiment was peformed by the strain inducing set-up installed on an optical table to simulating an intrusion effect. In the result of this experiment, the intrusion effect was well detected as the distance resolution of 3 m through the fiber length of about 4.81 km during 1.5 seconds.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the lathe tool vibration and verify its usefulness using the fiber optic interferometeric sensor instead of using common accelerometer. To compare two vibration signals a Fabry-Perot fiber optic sensor(FOS) is directly attached to the left-side surface of the lathe tool and an accelerometer is attached near to the fiber optic sensor. Measurement signals from the FOS and theoretical results of receptance simulation are compared. When the amplitude of tool vibration increased the frequency shift phenomena was occurred. This means that mass effect occurred and vibration spectrum moved to the low frequency region. Generally this results is agreement to the regenerative chatter. The chatter frequency is not same as the natural frequency of the tool itself. The FOS can also applied to laboratory experiments for students. This experimental technique is perhaps the first attempts because of directly attachment technique. Therefore, suggested Fabry-Perot fiber optic sensor can be used to monitoring the tool wear and vibration.

  • The fiber optic Sagnac interferometer is well established as a sensor for detection of physical perturbations such as acoustic and vibration. In this paper acoustic signals generated in the cylindrical cavity submerged in transformer oil were measured by the fiber optic sensor array in one Sagnac loop. Two different external sound frequencies, $f_1$ and $f_2$, were applied to the sensor array simultaneously by using piezoelectric with frequency range from 5 kHz to 90 kHz. Based on the experimental results, fiber optic sensor detected harmonic series of applied sound frequency such as $f_1$, $f_2$, $2f_1$, $2f_2$, ${\mid}f_1-f_2{\mid}$, ${\mid}f_1+f_2{\mid}$. Suggested fiber optic sensor array can be applied to monitor physical quantities such as internal sound pressure and vibration due to partial discharge in the real electric transformer system.

  • A fiber-optic radiation sensor was fabricated using a sensing probe, a plastic optical fiber, a photomultiplier tube, and a multichannel analyzer for gamma-ray spectroscopy. As an inorganic scintillator of the sensing probe, a LYSO crystal was used. In this study, we obtained the relationship between the photon counts of the fiber-optic radiation sensor and the activity of the radioactive isotope. In addition, the gamma-ray energy spectra were also measured using a fiber-optic radiation sensor to discriminate species of gamma-ray emitters.

  • We have demonstrated a highly sensitive temperature sensor using an etched single mode fiber with a thermally expanded core region. Large core size of thermally expanded core facilitates access to evanescent wave by the wet etching. The etched region was surrounded by a low dispersive external medium with high thermo-optic coefficient. Due to the large difference between the dispersion property of the fiber and that of the external medium, the device reveals a cut-off properties at spectral region. The cut-off wavelength was shifted by the variations of the environmental temperatures because of thermo-optic effect of the external medium. The sensitivity of the fabricated device was found to be $45nm/^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper describes a multiplexed-multivariate fiber-optic interferometric sensor system with remote sensing capability. Signal processor of the implemented sensor system is designed as a digital fringe counter that is well adapted to the signal processing of the remote fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor array. By summing up the reported optical data of the optical fiber, a guideline for choosing the optical effect suitable for a specific measurand is presented. As an example, a pressure sensing device that utilizes the strain-optic effect of the optical fiber by attaching it onto a stainless steel diaphragm of which diameter is 4.3 cm, is built and attached to the sensor system. The changes in optical phase difference of the fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric press ure sensor while filling a water tank 2 meters high, was counted by the half-fringe counting signal processor. Test results showed that the measurement error is less than ${\pm}3.6\;cm$ over the measured range of 2 meters.

  • Precision displacement of less than a few nm resolution was measured in real-time using fiber optic EFPI sensor. The novel method for real-time processing of analyzing EFPI output signal was developed and verified. Linearity in the mean values of interferometric light intensity among adjacent fringes was shown and verified the sinusoidal approximation algorithm that estimates past and coming fringe values. Real-time signal processing program was developed and the intensity signal of the EFPI sensor was transformed to the phase shift with this program. The resolution below $0.36{\sim}8.6$ nm in the displacement range of $0{\sim}300{\mu}m$ was obtained. The nano-positioner with a piezoelectric actuator and the EFPI sensor system was designed and tested. The positioner successfully reached to the desired destination within 1 nm accuracy.
