  • The EPON has been actively studied as one of the access networks for the economic configuration of FTTH. The EPON must support the dynamic bandwidth allocation to the subscribers in order to support the QoS due to its base on Ethernet technology EFM SG, which is actively working for the standardization of EPON, also recently decided to select DBA. Therefore in this paper, we designed a ONU buffer scheduling algorithm(AIWFQ) and a scheme of DBA(Class-based FCFS) for the OLT suitable for embodying MPCP of the EPON. In this paper, we proposed methods that the EPON system can make use of by measuring end to end process delay time and the buffer size in order to implement the algorithm by using the OPNET.

  • Optical packet switching (OPS) is being considered as one of the switching technologies for a future optical internet. For contention resolution in an optical packet switching (OPS) system, the wavelength dimension is generally used in combination with a fiber delay line (FDL) buffer. In this article, we propose a method to reduce the number of tunable wavelength converters (TWCs) by sharing TWCs for a cost-effective design of an asynchronous OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Asynchronous and variable-length packets are considered in the OPS system design. To investigate the number of TWCs needed for the OPS system, an algorithm is proposed, which searches for an available TWC and an unused internal wavelength, as well as an outgoing channel. This algorithm is applied to an OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Also, the number of internal wavelengths (i.e., the conversion range of the TWC) needed for an asynchronous OPS system is presented for cost reduction of the OPS system.

  • The packet error rates of an optical packet switching node with an optical address processor using an EDFA in order to detect M-ary correlation pulses at a fiber-optical delay line matched filter output have been evaluated. Effects of A PIN diode NEP, the gain and noise figure of the EDFA, and the bandwidth of an optical filter on the packet error rate of the switching node have been compared. There is negligible error rate change depending upon the variation of the PIN diode NEP and the EDFA gain. If the bandwidth of the optical filter is below 10 times of the data rate, there is no appreciable effect on the error rate. If the noise figure of the EDFA increases, however, the power penalty increases as much as the noise figure increment at all the bit rates and for address code sets considered in this work.

  • In this work, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is used to investigate soil samples collected from different desert areas of Riyadh city in Saudi Arabia. Both qualitative analysis and plasma parameters are studied via the observed LIBS spectra. These experiments have been done using a Spectrolaser-7000 system with 50 mJ fundamental wavelength of Nd:YAG laser and detection delay time of 1 microsecond. Many spectral lines are highly resolved for many elements like Al, Fe, Mg, Si, Mn, Na, Ca and K. The electron temperatures Te and electron densities Ne, for the constituent of generated LIBS plasma, are determined for all the collected samples. It is found that both Te and Ne vary from one desert area to other. This variation is due to the change of the elemental concentration in different desert areas that affects the sample's matrices. Time dependent measurements have also been performed on the soil samples. While the signal-to-base ratio (SBR) reached its optimal value at 1 microsecond, the plasma parameters Ne and Te reach values of $4{\times}10^{17}cm^{-3}$ and 9235 K, respectively, at 2.5 microsecond. The later indicate that the plasma cooling processes are slow in comparison to the previously observed results for metallic samples. The observed results show also that in the future it is possible to enhance the exploitation of LIBS in the remote on-line environmental monitoring application, by following up only the values of Ne and Te for one element of the soil desert sample using an optical fiber probe.

  • The supply expansion of 5G services and personal smart devices has caused the sharp increase of data traffic and the demand of various services. Again, these facts have resulted in the huge demand of network bandwidth. However, existing network technologies using electronic signal have reached the limit to accommodate the demand. Therefore, in order to accept this request, optical internet has been studied actively. However, optical internet still has a lot of problems to solve, and among these barriers a very urgent issue is to develop QoS technologies. Hence, in order to achieve service differentiation between classes in optical internet, especially in OBS network, a new QoS method automatically tuning the size of data bursts is proposed in this article. Especially, the algorithm suggested in this article is based on fiber delay line.

  • In this paper, we studied the OCT(Optical Coherence Tomography) system which it has been extensively studied because of having some advantages such as high resolution cross-sectional images, low cost, and small size configuration. A basic principle of OCT system is Michelson interferometer. The characteristics of light source determine the resolution and the transmission depth. As a results, the light source have a commercial SLD with a central wavelength of 1,285 nm and FWHM(Full Width at Half Maximum) of 35.3 nm. The optical delay line part is necessary to equal of the optical path length with scattered light or reflected light from sample. In order to equal the optical path length, the stage which is attached to reference mirror is moved linearly by step motor And the interferometer is configured with the Michelson interferometer using single mod fiber, the scanner can be focused of the sample by using the reference arm. Also, the 2-dimensional cross-sectional images were measured with scanning the transverse direction of the sample by using step motor. After detecting the internal signal of lateral direction at a paint of sample, scanner is moved to obtain the cross-sectional image of 2-demensional by using step motor. Photodiode has been used which has high detection sensitivity, excellent noise characteristic, and dynamic range from 800 nm to 1,700 nm. It is detected mixed small signal between noise and interference signal with high frequency After filtering and amplifying this signal, only envelope curve of interference signal is detected. And then, cross-sectional image is shown through converting this signal into digitalized signal using A/D converter. The resolution of the OCT system is about 30$\mu\textrm{m}$ which corresponds to the theoretical resolution. Also, the cross-sectional image of ping-pong ball is measured. The OCT system is configured with Michelson interferometer which has a low contrast because of reducing the power of feedback interference light. Such a problem is overcomed by using the improved inteferometer. Also, in order to obtain the cross-sectional image within a short time, it is necessary to reduce the measurement time for improving the optical delay line.

  • In the APON(ATM Passive Optical Network), the transmission of the upstream traffic is based on a TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) method that an OLT(Optical Line Termination) permits ONUs(Optical Network Units) sending cells by allocating time slots. Because the upstream is not a streaming mode, the cell synchronizer has to be operated in the burst mode. Also, the cell phase monitor is required to prevent collisions between cells which are transmitted by multiple ONUs through a single optical fiber. In this paper, a TDMA burst cell synchroniser is implemented with the FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) being used in the APON based on G.983.1 for transmitting upstream cells. It has two main functions which are the upstream data recovery and the phase monitoring. The former is to recover the upstream data and clock in the OLT by seeking the preamble which is the overhead of the upstream time slot and by aligning the phase of the bit and cell with the system clock. The latter is to provide the information to the ONU to compensate for the equalization delay by monitoring continuously the phase difference between adjacent cells to avoid the cell collision on the upstream.

  • An ATM-PON (Passive Optical Network) system consists of an OLT (Optical Line Termination), multiple ONUs (Optical Network Units) and the optical fiber which has a PON (Passive Optical Network)configuration with a passive optical splitter. To avoid cell collisions on the upstream transmission, an elaborate procedure called as ranging is needed when a new ONU is installed. The ONU can send upstream cells according to the grant provided by the OLT after the procedure. To prevent collisions being generated by the variation of several factors, OLT must performs continuously the cell phase monitoring. It means that the OLT predicts the expected arrival time, monitors the actual arrival time for all upstream cells and calculates the error between the times. Accordingly, TC (Transmission Convergence) chip in the OLT needs a predictor which predicts the time that the cell will arrive for the current grant. In this paper, we implement the predictor by using shift registers of which the length is equivalent to the equalized round trip delay. As each register consists of 8 bit, OLT can identify which ONU sends what type of cell (ranging cell, user cell, idle cell, and mini-slot). Also, TC chip is designed to calculate the effective bandwidth for all ONUs by using the function of predictor. With the time simulation and the measurement of an implemented optical board, we verify the operation of the predictor.
