In this paper, experimental as well as numerical analysis of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminated composite has been presented under ballistic impact with varying projectile nose shapes (conical, ogival and spherical) and incidence velocities. The experimental impact tests on GFRP composite plate reinforced with woven glass fiber ($0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$)s are performed by using pneumatic gun. A three dimensional finite element model is developed in AUTODYN hydro code to validate the experimental results and to study the ballistic perforation characteristic of the target with different parametric variations. The influence of projectile nose shapes, plate thickness and incidence velocity on the variation of residual velocity, ballistic limit, contact force-time histories, energy absorption, damage pattern and damage area in the composite target have been studied. The material characterization of GFRP composite is carried out as required for the progressive damage analysis of composite. The numerical results from the present FE model in terms of residual velocity, absorbed energy, damage pattern and damage area are having close agreement with the results from the experimental impact tests.
During fatigue loading of composite materials, damage accumulation can be monitored by measuring their material properties. In this study, fatigue modulus is used as the damage index. Fatigue life of composite materials may be predicted analytically using damage models which are based on fatigue modulus and resultant strain. Damage models are propesed as funtions of applied stress level, number of fatigue cycle and fatigue life. The predicted life was comparable to the experimental result obtained using E-glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin materials and pultruded glass fiber reinforce polyester composites under two-stress level fatigue loading.

The experimental work was performed to investigate the effect influenced to the hystresis and the flexural strength improvement of RC beam using carbon fiber plates. Major parameters of this experimental program were the section size of carbon fiber plates and the damage level of RC beam before reinforcement. Particularly, the damage level of beam is for the cases damaged by overloads. The damage level is for 30%, 60%, and 100% of flexural strength, and no damaged beams were also tested for comparison with the damaged one. from the test results, it showed that the beams reinforced by carbon fiber plates had the higher strength and lower deformation capacity than the general beams and that it had the same ductility ratio of the general beams.
Multivariate statistics based damage detection algorithms employed in conjunction with novel sensing technologies are attracting more attention for long term Structural Health Monitoring of civil infrastructure. In this study, two practical data driven methods are investigated utilizing strain data captured from a 4-span bridge model by Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors as part of a bridge health monitoring study. The most common and critical bridge damage scenarios were simulated on the representative bridge model equipped with FBG sensors. A high speed FBG interrogator system is developed by the authors to collect the strain responses under moving vehicle loads using FBG sensors. Two data driven methods, Moving Principal Component Analysis (MPCA) and Moving Cross Correlation Analysis (MCCA), are coded and implemented to handle and process the large amount of data. The efficiency of the SHM system with FBG sensors, MPCA and MCCA methods for detecting and localizing damage is explored with several experiments. Based on the findings presented in this paper, the MPCA and MCCA coupled with FBG sensors can be deemed to deliver promising results to detect both local and global damage implemented on the bridge structure.

The HPFRCCs show that the multiple crack propagation, high tensile strength and ductility due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. Moreover, performance of cement composites varies according to type and weight contents of reinforcing fiber. and HPFRCCs with hybrid fiber have better performance than HPFRCCs with single fiber in damage tolerance. Total four cylindrical specimens were tested, and the main variables were the type and weight contents of fiber, which was polyvinylalchol (PVA), polyethylene (PE). In order to clarify effect of hybrid types on the characteristics of fracture and damage process in cement composites, AE method was performed to detect micro-cracking in HPFRCCs under cyclic compression. Loading conditions of the uniaxial compression test were monotonic and cyclic loading. And from AE parameter value, it is found that the second and third compressive load cycles resulted in successive decrease of the amplitude as compared with the first compressive load cvcle.
Mode II delamination propagation is an important damage mode in laminated composites and this paper aims to investigate the behavior of this damage in laminated composite materials using acoustic emission (AE) technique. Three different lay-ups of glass/epoxy composites were subjected to mode II delamination propagation and generated AE signals were recorded. In order to investigate the propagation of delamination behavior of these specimens, AE signals were analyzed using Wavelet Packet Transforms (WPT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In addition, conventional AE analyses were used to enhance understanding of the propagation of delamination damage. The results indicate that different fracture mechanisms were the main cause of the AE signals. The dominant mechanisms in all the specimens were matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding and fiber breakage, with varying percentage of the damage mechanisms for each lay-up. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations were in accordance to the AE results.

In this research, we investigated the frequency characteristic of low-velocity impact induced damage signals on graphite/epoxy composite laminates using high-speed fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor system. Appling the FBG sensors to damage assessment, we need to study the response of FBG sensors as the damage signals of the different incident angles because FBG shows different directional sensitivity. In order to discriminate an impact induced damage signal from that of undamaged case, drop impacts with different energies were applied to the composite panel with different incident angle to the FBG sensor. Finally, detected impact signals were compared using frequency distributions of wavelet detail components in order to find distinctive signal characteristics of composites delamination.
Rubber-modified epoxy resins have been employed as adhesive and matrix materials for glass and corbon-fiber composites. The behavior of fracture around a crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated through the acoustic emission (AE) analysis of compact tension specimens. Damage zone and rubber particles distributed around a crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The damage zone in front of pre-crack tip in rubber-modified specimen $(15wt\%\; rubber)$ began to form at about $13\%$ level of the fracture load and grew in size until $57\%$ load level. After that, the crack propagated in a stick-slip manner. Based on time-frequency analysis of AE signals and microscopic observation of damage zone, it was thought that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15-0.20 MHz and 0.200.30 MHz were generated from cavitation in the damage zone and crack propagation, respectively.

Tensile properties and fracture toughness of monolithic aluminum, fiber reinforced plastics and glass fiber/aluminum hybrid laminates under tensile loads have been investigated using plain coupon and single-edge-notched specimens. Elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength of GFMLs showed different characteristic behaviors according to the Al kind, fiber orientation and composition ratio. Fracture, toughness of A-GFML-UD which was determined by the evaluation of $K_{IC}$ and $G_{IC}$ based on critical load was similar to that of GFRP-UD and was much higher than monolithic Al. Therefore, A-GFML-UD presented superior fracture toughness as well as prominent damage tolerance in comparison to its constituent Al. By separating Al sheet from GFMLs after the test, optical microscope observation of fracture zone of GFRP layer in the vicinity of crack tip revealed that crack advance of GFMLs depended on the orientation of fiber layer as well as Al/fiber composition ratio.
Fiber is an important ingredient in fiber-reinforced cement composite (FRCC) which can control fracture of cement composite by bridging action. In compliance with the action of the fiber and the aggregate size, it also showed a different failure mechanism. For practical application, it is needed to investigate the fracture behavior of the FRCC and to understand the micro-mechanism of cement matrix with reinforcing fiber. In order to evaluate a characteristics of fracture process in the FRCC, acoustic emission (AE) technique was used for the analysis and evaluation of FRCC damage by acoustic emission under flexural and cyclic compressive loadings. The AE signals were monitored by AMSY4 AE instrument during the entire loading period. The specimens are reinforced with 0, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% (by volume) Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber. The test results showed that the damage progress of the FRCC was characteristic for the fiber replacement ratio. As a result of analyzing the felicity ratio (FR) values, it is shown that this values can be used for evaluating the degree of FRCC damage. On the whole the felicity ratio values of FRCC are shown between 0.4 and 1.1. And, the AE kaiser effect was shown in the all FRCC specimen. In addition, the damage behavior and the microscopic fracture process of the FRCC are evaluated using the AE parameters, such as calm ratio, b-value and felicity ratio. The purpose of this reserch was to advance the state of knowledge regarding the applicability of acoustic emission as an evaluation method for FRCC.
