Even though grass species are one of major importance in livestock industry, the response of intergeneric hybridization of Lolium and Festuca and interspecific hybridization of Lolium m.X Lolium p. to Korean climatic condition has not been adequately documented. This reasearch was conducted to examine the growth characteristics and dry matter yield of Festulolium, cv. Felopa and C-Stamm N 66 and hybrid ryegrass, cv. Maja and Tetilelite. 1. The early growth of Italian ryegrass was better than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. The plant length and helght of Italian ryegrass were longerltaller than those of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium, but the number of tillers of Italian ryegrass was less than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. 2. Festulolium and hybrid ryegrass were more tolerant than Italian xyegrass to winter killing, 70-80% of tillers was survived. 3. After wintering, early spring growth of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were better than that of Italian ryegrass. Dry matter yield of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were more than that of Italian ryegrass. 4. Spikes of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium (C-Stamm N66) were more than those of Italian ryegrass. Seed yield per $m^2$ of hybrid ryegrass and Italian ryegrass were almost same, but that of Festulolium was lower.

This study was conducted to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality of mixture swards associated with Festulolium braunii(Festuca pratensis Huds. ${\times}$ Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four mixture types: A(control); orchardgrass(seeding rate 60%) + tall fescue 20% + Kentucky bluegrass 10% + white clover 10%, B; orchardgrass 60% + tall fescue 20% + Festulolium braunii 10% + white clover 10%, C; orchardgrass 60% + Festulolium braunii 20% + Kentucky bluegrass 10% + white clover 10%, and D; orchardgrass 30% + Festulolium braunii 30% + red clover 40%. This study was carried out from Sept. 1996 to Dec. 1998 at Chungnam National University. The DM yield of D mixture type was higher than that of other mixture types(P<0.05). Compared with A(control) mixture type, the DM yield of the B mixture type which substitutes Kentucky bluegrass with Festulolium braunii was higher, but the C mixture type which substitutes tall fescue with Festulolium braunii was lower than that of A(control) mixture type. The content of CP, NDF, ADF, hemi-cellulose and cellulose among mixture types shows no significant differdence. Howerever, the DMD was not significantly different among mixture types in 1997, but the DMD of C and D mixture type were significantly higher than those of other mixture types in 1998(P<0.05). On the otherhand, the yield of CP and DDM in D mixture types was higher than those of the other mixture types(P<0.05). In botanical composition, the Festulolium braunii percentage of B, C and D mixture type with mixed Festulolium braunii wasd highly maintained, especially D mixture type was ranging from 40% to 60% in experimental periods. Following the above result, It is the most favorable mixture method for Festulolium braunii to make use of top grass like orchardgrass + red clover. It is also recommened to substitute bottom grass like Kentucky bluegrass with Festulolium braunii rather than with tall fescue in A(control) mixture type.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the forage yield and quality potential of Festulolium braunii (Festuca pratensis Huds. $\times$ Lolium multiflotum Lam) as forage source in Korea. The experimental design was a split plot design with four replications from Feb. 1994 to Jan. 1996 at Hohenheim uniwrsity. Main plots were three forage species {Fesruca pratensis(Cosmos), Lolium mult~~orum(Lemtal) and Festulolium braunii(Pau1ita)) and subplots were three N levels (150,300 and 450kgha). No differences in dry matter(DM) yields were noted between Festulolium braunii and Lolium multj7orum, but DM yields for Festulolium braunii was 138 more than for Fesruca prafensis(P<0.01 ). Total DM yields over all species increased linearly with increasing N levels. The peak of DM yields over 2 years mean at 450kglha N levels were higher for Lolium mulriJotum(l5,724kg) than for Festulolium braunii(14,730kg) and for Festuca pratensis(l3,68 l kg) (P<0.01). OMD, ME, NEL and other minerals of Fesrulolium braunii were slightly higher and CP, Ca and Mg slightly lower than thsoe of Fesruca pratensis, but CP, OMD, NEL and minerals were absolutly higher for Fesrulolium braunii than for Lolium mulriflorum(P<0.01). It appears that Festulolium braunii has higher potential for improvement of the forage quality than Fesruca prarensis or Lolium rnulrijlorum. The content of CP, CF and minerals were increased, wherease OMD, ME and NEL were decreased in all species with increasing N levels. Yields of CP, DOM and NEL over 2 yean mean were increased in all species with increasing N levels. CP, DOM and NEL yields of Festulolium braunii were higher than those of Lolium multiflorum or Festuca pratensis(P

This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of Festulolium braunii(Festuca pratensis Huds. $\times$ Loliurn mulrijZorum Lam.)as forge sources. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with four replications from Feb. 1995. to Jan. 1996 at Hohenheim university. Main plots consisted of three forage species, Festulolirtrn braunii(Paulita), Lolium multiJomm(Lemtla), and Secale cereale(Halo) and subplots consisted of three maturity, boot, heading, and anthesis. The growth characteristics, DM yields, nutritive value, N and energy balance were observed. The heading date of Festulolium braunii was about two days earlier than that of Loliunz mrtltiflorum, farthermore Fesrulolium braunii retained higher leaf weight ratio(LWR) than other species. Festulolium brarrnii failed to show any significant differences in grass length, number of tillers, LAI, CGR, and DM accumulation when harvested at the same stage of maturity as compare with Loliurn mulriiflorutn or Setale cerede, bur the content of CP, OMD, and mineral elements and NEL value of Festulolium braunii compare to othes were slightly increased(P<0.05), while the content of NDF, ADF, and lignin decreased(P<0.05). The yield of CP was greater for Festulolium braunii than for Lolium multfimm and yields of DOM and NEL per unit area(ha) for Festulolium braunii were greater than for other species(P<0.05). The equivalent or higher DM production and nutritive value are obtained when Festulolium braunii are cut during the period from boot to anthesis stages, therefor DM intake, preference, and N and energy balance were also higher for Festulolirtm braunii compare to for other species. It could be suggested that Lolium multrfirum would be a more suitable substitute to Festuloliron braunii without decreasing forage production and quality, but the substitutive effect of Secale cereale would be difficult because of the maor differences in growth type and period compare to Fesrulolium braunii. From above the results of this experiment it appears that Festulolium braunii have a potential to provide forage sources. but funher research is needed to ascertain their potential under the climate of Korea.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the forage yield and quality and the possibility to provide Festulolium bmunii(Festuca pratensis $Huds{\times}Lolium$ mult~jlotum Lam.) as forage source in Korea. The Festuloliurn braunii were harvested at boot, heading and anthesis stage, respectively. The field trials were performed 6om 1994 to 1996 at the forage experimental field, College of agriculture, Chunpam National University. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The date of boot, heading and anthesis stage of Festulolium bmunii observed in Taejon were May 12, May 23 and June 1 in 1995, and June 1, June 4 and June 9 in 1996, respectively. Winter survival percentage of Festulolium bmunii war ranged 6om 96% to 98% and summer survival percentage were 75-86%. It would suggest that Festulolium brawlii persisted well in the aspect of overwintering, while it wasn' t widely adapted to drought and high temperature in Taejon regions. 2. The CP content and DMD of Festulolium bmunii tended to decline as the growth stage advanced. The CP content and DMD of Festulolium bmunii were high at the boot stage and those at the anthesis stage were low. But fiber contents at the boot stage were lower than those at anthesis stage(P< 0.05). The yields of the DM and DDM with advancing the growing stage tended to increase, while there was no difference in the CPDM yields among stages. On the otherhand, the yields of DM and DDM at the anthesis stage were the highest (P< 0.05), but there was no difference in CPDM yield among stages. Based on the results mentioned above, it is suggested that Festulolium b m n i i has a possibility to use until the anthesis stage under the cutting regimes and that it has a potentiality to provide one of a good forage sources. %'ifqqiZ 43q *(College of Agriculture, Chungnam National Un~versity, Taejon 305-764, Korea)

This study was conducted to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality of mixture types with Festulolium braunii (Festuca pratensis Huds. ${\times}$ Lolium multiflorum Lam.) as a forage sources. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three mixture types: (1) Festulolium braunii (seeding rate, FB 50%)+orchardgrass (OG 50%), (2) Festulolium braunii (FB 80%)+red clover(RC 20%), and (3) Festulolium braunii (FB 20%)+orchardgrass (OG 50%)+tall fescue(TF 20%)+white clover (WC 10%) and four replications. This study carried out from Sep. 1995 to May 1998 at Chungnam University. Throughout this experiment, the dry matter yields and forage quality were observed. The DM yield of FB+RC mixtures was higher than that of other mixture types, but there were no significant difference among mixture types. The FB+RC mixtures was higher than the other mixture types in the CP content(P<0.05). However, the NDF and ADF content of FB+RC mixtures were significantly lower than those of other mixture types(P<0.05). The CP and DDM yields of FB+RC mixtures were higher than those of other mixture types(P<0.05). In addition, the FB percentage of total herbage was ranged from 51% to 58% in all mixture types at the last cutting time in 1997. Based on the results mentioned above, it appears that FB has enough of possibility in mixture with other grasses, especially good mixed with RC.

The content of CP showed no difference between Potomac and Paulita, but NDF, ADF and lignin contents of Paulita were absolutly lower than those of Potomac (P<0.05). The retained N and energy were also high for Paulita compare to for Potomac. It could be suggested that Paulita has higher potential for improvement of the forage quality than Potomac and it have a potential to provide as a forage sources.

This experiment was carried out in order to examine the winterhardiness, heading date, fresh and dry matter yeild of Festulolium braunii, a hybrid of Festuca pratensis and Lolium multiflum, which is newly introduced in Korea. This experiment was performed at National Livestock Research Institute in Suwon and Namwon from September 2004 to July 2005. The results are as follows. 'Fleurial', 'Boxer', and 'Perun' showed stronger winterhardiness than 'Hwasan 101', which is one of the strongest in the winterhardiness hybrids. Therefore, we do not see there is any problem in winterhardiness when these hybrids are cultivated in Korea. The hybrids are turned out to be mid and late maturing hybrid. The average heading dates of the three hybrids were May 25 in Namwon and May 27 in Suwon. These dates are lower($1{\sim}3$ days) than that of Hwasan 101. They showed $91{\sim}96cm$ in leaf length at 1st cutting times which are comparatively long. This experiment also disclosed that their lodging and regrowth are strong and excellent. We also found out that there are significant difference between regions and hybrids in the total fresh yield per ha. The average fresh yield of Suwon was 83,222 kg/ha and that of Namwon was 69,139 kg/ha. We could not see any difference in the dry matter yield affected by region, however, there were significant difference in hybrids(p<0.05). The crude protein contents of the three hybrids indicated very high figures. the crude protein cotents of Perun, Fleurial and Boxer are 18.0% 17.4% and 16.7% respectively. However the ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber) shows $28.1{\sim}29.2%$ which is less contents than 33.2% of Hwasan 101. We found out from this experiment that these three hybrids have excellent feed quality because the NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber) is decreased by $7{\sim}3.8%$ comparing that the NDF of Hwasan 101 is 58.3%. Also each hybrids contains more crude fat by 1%, a little more chemical composition and less ash contents. Thus we can tern that chemical composition contents of these hybrids are also fittable.

This experiment was carried out to examine the winter hardiness, heading date, quality, and yields of Festulolium hybrids, Festuca pratensis and Lolium multiflorum, which were cultivated during September 2005 to July 2006 at Suwon and Namwon. The results are as follows; Perun, Boxer, and Fleurial showed stronger or same level of hardiness than Hwasan 101, which is one of the strongest hybrids in winter hardiness. Therefore, we did not detect any problem in winter hardiness when these hybrids were cultivated in Korea. These are turned out to be mid and late maturing hybrids. The average heading date of three hybrids were 24 to 27 May in Suwon and Namwon. These date are same or 3 days later than Hwasan 101. The average fresh yields of 3 hybrids were increased by $17{\sim}29%$ than that of Hwasan 101. And the dry matter yields of Perun, Boxer, and Fleurial were increased by 39%, 26%, and 29%, respectively, than that of Hwasan 101. We could not detect any difference in the average fresh and dry matter yields between region, however there were significant differences in hybrids(p<0.05). Crude protein contents of 3 hybrids were higher to $14.3{\sim}16.6%$ than that of Hwasan 101. The neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber were decreased by 3.9 and 7.0%, respectively, comparing to Hwasan 101. Therefore these hybrids have turned out to be excellent feed quality hybrids.
