  • In order to study the effect of lubrication during hot rolling, ferritic stainless steel (FSS) sheet were hot-rolled with and without application of lubrication. The effect of two hot rolling processes on the evolution of texture and microstructure after hot rolling, cold rolling and subsequent recrystallization annealing was studied by means of macro-texture analysis and microstructure observations. After hot rolling, the specimen rolled with lubrication showed rolling textures at the sheet surface, while the specimen rolled without lubrication displayed shear textures in the outer layers of the sheet. Hot rolling with lubrication was beneficial to the formation of strong recrystallization textures at sheet surface. However, hot rolling with lubrication led to the formation of orientation colonies in outer thickness layers of the recrystallized sheet.

  • Nucleation and growth process of sticking particle in ferritic stainless steels was investigated using a two disk type hot rolling simulator. The sticking behavior was strongly dependent on the surface roughness of a high speed steel roll(HSS) and the oxidation resistance of the ferritic stainless steels. A hot rolling condition with the lower oxidation resistance of the stainless steel and the higher surface roughness of HSS roll was more sensitive to sticking occurrence. It was also illucidated that the initial sticking particles were nucleated at the scratches formed on the roll surface and were served as the sticking growth sites. As rolling proceeded, the sticking particles grew sites. As rolling proceeded, the sticking particles grew by the process that the previous sticking particles provided the sticking growth sites.

  • The texture inhomogeniety during rolling is one of the greatest problems. Especially, shear texture develops more easily during ferritic rolling of steel sheets at high temperatures due to friction between rolls and the material. In this study, the influence of front and back tensions on the texture development during ferritic rolling has been studied. The rolling textures were simulated using the full constrains Taylor-Bishiop-Hill model with the strain history obtained from finite element analysis. The calculated textures showed that the back tension rolling could reduce the shear component more effectively than front tension or rolling without tension. However, the experimental results showed that the lension effect was very small compared to our prediction. It might be attributed to initial texture and difference in frictions between simulation and experiments.

  • Sticking behavior under the hot rolling conditions for ferritic stainless steels have been studied. Sticking, which is a phenomenon that the naked metal exposed to the surface by scale breakaway during hot rolling sticks to the roll surface, was affected by both high temperature tensile strength and oxidation resistance of the steels. A steel having higher tensile strength and lower oxidation resistance exhibits better resistance to the sticking. It is due to that higher tensile strength increases localized deformation resistance and lower oxidation resistance creates lower friction between steel and roll by forming thicker scale as a lubricant during hot rolling. So, the sticking tends to occur more severely in the order of 430J1L, 436L, 430 and 409L. The most sensitive temperature to the sticking was found to be 90$0^{\circ}C$ for all grade of steels. It was also found that the high speed steel(HSS) roll compared to the Hi-Cr roll was more beneficial to prevent sticking. Because higher surface hardness of HSS roll compared to that of Hi-Cr roll provides less nucleation sites for sticking such as scratch on the roll surface.

  • Recent trend and future prospect of flat rolling of steel has been summarized based on the earlier reports. Key technology in the plate rolling is to have ultra fine microstructure having high resistance against crack propagation during application. Heavy accelerated cooling facility and high power rolling mill will be helpful to develope the high toughness steel. Precise modeling of properly prediction based on deformation and transformation imposed on microstructure of steel during processing is highly anticipated. For the hot strip rolling process, new trend is lies on the production of ultra-thin gauged hot strip to substitute cold rolled strip. For the substitution of cold rolled strip into hot rolled strip widely, high formable property of hot strip is highly required. For the formabilit, the ferritic rolling of extra low carbon steel under high lubricated condition is essential. Recently introduced semi-continuous thin slab and rolling mill line is very plausible to develope those kinds of products easily In the view groin facility combination. New idea to modify the existing continuous hot strip mill line to produce the ultra thin-gauged hot strip in an economic way is suggested in this report.

  • Mechanisms of sticking phenomena occurring during hot rolling of a modified STS 430J1L ferritic stainless steel have been investigated in this study by using a pilot-plant-scale rolling machine. As the rolling pass proceeds, the Fe-Cr oxide layer formed in a reheating furnace is destroyed, and the destroyed oxides penetrate into the rolled steel to form a thin oxide layer on the surface region. The sticking does not occur on the surface region containing oxides, whereas it occurs on the surface region without oxides by the separation of the rolled steel at high temperatures. This indicates that the resistance to sticking increases by the increase in the surface hardness when a considerable amount of oxides are formed on the surface region, and that the sticking can be evaluated by the volume fraction and distribution of oxides formed on the surface region. The lubrication and the increase of the rolling speed and rolling temperature beneficially affect to the resistance to sticking because they accelerate the formation of oxides on the steel surface region. In order to prevent or minimize the sticking, thus, it is suggested to increase the thickness of the oxide layer formed in the reheating furnace and to homogeneously distribute oxides along the surface region by controlling the hot-rolling process.

  • Ferritic STS 439 Steel sheet were deformed by hot rolling with and without lubricant. The effect of friction between roll and specimen on inhomogeneous texture was studied by means of EBSD, XRD texture analysis. The textures were compared with those of obtained by Taylor FEM simulation. High friction between roll and sheet gave rise to the formation of the inhomogeneous shear texture through thickness.

  • JLF-1 steel (Fe-9Cr-2W-V-Ta), reduced activation ferritic steel, is one of the promising candidate materials for fusion reactor applications. Tensile properties of JLF-1 base metal and its TIG weldments has been investigated at the room temperature, $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength of base metal (JLF-1) showed the level between those of weld metal and the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). When the test temperature was increased from room temperature to high temperature ($400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$), both strength and ductility decreased or base metal, weld metal and the HAZ. The longitudinal specimens of base metal represented similar strength and ductility at room temperature and high temperature, compared to those of transverse specimens. Little anisotropy for the rolling direction was observed in the base metal of JLF-1 steel.

  • In order to improve the sheet formability of the ferritic stainless steel, the through-thickness textures of the recrystallized sample was modified by means of a thermomechanical treatment. An annealing process between the cold rolling reductions modified the preferred orientations throughout the thickness, which resulted in the modification of the final cold rolling texture as well as the final recrystallization texture. With the help of the modification of the recrystallization texture by the intermediate annealing, improvement of the sheet formability, i.e. an increase of the Lankford value.

Effects of Y and Ti addition on microstructure stability and tensile properties of reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel

  • The effects of Y and Ti on the microstructure stability and tensile properties of the reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel have been investigated. The addition of Y and Ti affected the prior austenite grain size due to the pinning of the inclusions. Ti addition of 0.008 wt% to the steel was intended to promote the precipitation of nano-sized carbides with a high resistance to coarsening. 8Ti14Y exhibited a higher yield strength and a lower DBTT than the other alloys due to the fine grain size and additional precipitation hardening by (Ti, Ta)-rich MX. After thermal exposure at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1500 h, yield strength was dropped significantly in exposed 0Ti13Y. On the contrary, a lower reduction of YS was observed in 8Ti14Y. The $M_{23}C_6$ in 0Ti13Y and 8Ti14Y and MX in 25Ti14Y and 39Ti15Y coarsened seriously during ageing, which could be responsible for the reduction of the tensile properties of alloys.
