  • The insect industry is a promising agricultural resource and expected to grow steadily. In Korea, Gryllus bimaculatus and the larvae of Tenebrio molior, Protaetia brevitarsis, and Allomyrina dichotoma were listed as general food ingredients. As interest in these edible insects increases, rearing techniques and nutritious food sources are needed for mass production. In this study, wheat bran, dog feed, and pig feed were investigated for their effects on the larval growth of P. brevitarsis and A. dichotoma. When fermented sawdust with 30% wheat bran was used, the larval survival rate of P. brevitarsis and A. dichotoma (p=0.244341 and p=0.007966, respectively) and growth rate (p=0.001400 and p=0.000051, respectively) were significantly lower than those of the control (fermented sawdust with no supplement). Therefore, fermented sawdust with a high density of wheat bran was inappropriate for both insects. When fed fermented sawdust with 2.5 or 5% of dog and pig feed, the survival rate and growth rate of the larvae were higher than those of the control. Interestingly, the maximum larval weight with 2.5% dog feed was increased by $3.35{\pm}0.10g$ and $32.59{\pm}0.79g$ for P. brevitarsis and A. dichotoma, respectively. In addition, the larval period of both was shorter than that of the control by 40 days or more. Therefore, it is considered that animal feed can be used as a feed source for these edible insects.

  • Fresh dairy cow manure was mixed with dried sawdust at the following moisture contents and manure: sawdust ratios: 50% and 57:43 ($\underline{M50}$), 55% and 64:36 ($\underline{M55}$), 60% and 70:30 ($\underline{M60}$), 65% and 76:24 ($\underline{M65}$), 70% and 83:17 ($\underline{M70}$) 75% and 90:10($\underline{M75}$) and 80% and 96:04($\underline{M80}$). The mixtures were fermented by a fungal mycelium of Fomitella flaxinea for 2wk at 29 C to recycle cow manure along with sawdust and fungal mycelium as a ruminant feedstuff. Chemical composition and in vitro rumen dry matter digestibilities of fermented mixtures were compared with unfermented mixture. The crude protein contents of mixtures were not changed by fermentation with fungal mycelium. Neutral detergent fiber contents of 4WK fermented mixtures (90.6, 85.3, 80.4, and 76.4% for $\underline{M50}$, $\underline{M60}$, $\underline{M70}$ and $\underline{M80}$, respectively were lower (P<0.05) than those of unfermented mixtures (91.1, 89.9, 84.3, and 79.4%). However, acid detergent fiber contents of fermented mixtures (73.8, 68.9, 65.3, and 58.0%) were higher (P<0.05) than those unfermented mixtures (70.2, 67.8, 61.7, and 56.3%). In vitro rumen dry matter digestibilities of fermented mixtures for four weeks(49.4, 36.8, 28.6, and 22.3% for $\underline{M50}$, $\underline{M60}$, $\underline{M70}$ and $\underline{M80}$) were higher than those of unfermented mixtures(34.1, 27.5, 20.6, and 15.4%) (P<0.05).

  • In order to explore mycelial growth and fruiting body formation of Lyophyllum decates on different media, ten cultivation media by using cottonseed hull, sawdust, corn cob etc. as main components were designed for seven strains. The results showed that the mycelial colour of all strains are mainly snow-white, and the formula of media using corn cob as main materials was better than that using cottonseed hull and sawdust for mycelial growth, but no fruiting body was formed. The cottonseed hull medium with a small amount of sawdust, plant leaves, humus or fermented material and wheat was beneficial for fruiting formation. The incubation period for fruiting formation of strain 3001 was 108 days and the highest yield was-214.80 g/bag. Fructification of the strains tasted occurs successively in order of 3001, 1035, 1004 and 1013. It was concluded that different medium composition had significant effect on the mycelial growth and fruiting body formation.

  • To screen additives and their mixed ratio suitable for the mycelial growth and fruiting body formation of Oudemansiella radicata in the oak sawdust, additives such as rice bran, fermented soybean powder and wheat bran were used. Generally, the mycelial growth of O. radicata has been stable on oak sawdust mixed with rice bran of $5{\sim}20%$. In case that O. radicata was cultured for about 30 days at $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ under the illumination (350 lux) of 12 hours and moisture condition of $90{\pm}5%$, the primordia have been formed gradually from red-brown crusts covering the surface of oak sawdust media. Based on the experimental results from 9 strains of O. radicata, fruiting bodies were produced widely on oak sawdust medium mixed with rice bran of 5 to 30%. Even though fruiting bodies of O. radicata have been produced well on oak sawdust media mixed with rice bran, fruiting bodies of O. radicata were produced intensively on oak sawdust media mixed with rice bran of 10%. Therefore, this result will provide a basic information for commercial production of fruiting body of wild O. radicata. This result is the first report associated with an artificial fruiting body formation of O. radicata in Korea.

  • This study was performed to find a medium material that can replace Douglas fir sawdust and rice bran in spawn media for growing spawn directly in the oyster mushroom farm. The pH range, total nitrogen source, and total carbon source of the mixed spawn medium were 5.3~5.9, 0.65~1.11%, and 47.0~49.1%, respectively. The C/N ratio was high in the mixed medium of poplar sawdust, with a low total nitrogen content. The protein content was high in the medium containing fermented Douglas fir sawdust. The mycelium growth rate was higher in the medium containing wheat bran than that in the medium containing rice bran. The highest yield per bottle was observed with poplar sawdust, oak sawdust, and rice bran mixed at a ratio of 40:40:20 (v/v/v); however, there was no significant difference observed in terms of productivity with the other treatments. Thus, when growing sawdust spawns in farms, it is efficient to use poplar sawdust, oak sawdust, and wheat bran, which are also easily available, instead of Douglas fir sawdust and rice bran.

  • This experiments was conducted to investigate the influence on the growth of Sorghum ${\times}$ Sudangrass hybrid by use of various organic fertilizer and investigated their productivity, feed value and stock carrying capacity. In the results, the application of fermented poultry manure showed 93.6ton/ha, 19.6ton/ha, 1.12ton/ha, 11.31ton/ha of fresh yield, dry matter yield, crude protein (CP) yield and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield but there were no significant differences with the application of poultry by-product compost (poultry manure with sawdust) and swine by-product compost (swine manure with sawdust). And the average value of $K_{CP}$ and $K_{TDN}$ showed the highest one as 9.45head/ha/yr in the application of fermented poultry manure. However, organic matter content of fermented poultry manure to the lower portion of 32.1% compared to other organic fertilizers could imagine that mineralization of fermented poultry manure was fairly advanced and plant used most of nitrogen in fermented poultry manure, so productivity of Sorghum ${\times}$ Sudangrass hybrid was shown more than other organic fertilizers. If other organic fertilizers use continuous, this difference can be considered to be reduced further. As a result, fermented poultry manure is better than other organic fertilizers in productivity, feed value and stock carrying capacity due to the higher content of mineralizable matters. In addition, mixing poultry manure with cow and swine manure is better choice because cow and swine manure will meet a low organic matter in poultry manure.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the type and application level of swine manure on herbage productivity, efficiency of nitrogen utilization and environmental pollution by the leaching of nitrogen compounds in mixed grassland. The field experiment was carried out on established grassland sward growing on silt clay loam soil. Main plots were the types of swine manure, such as swine manure fermented with sawdust(SMFWS), swine manure fermented without sawdust(SMF) and swine slurry(SS), and mineral fertilizer(Urea). Subplots were the application levels of swine manure, such as 100, 200 and 400 kgN/ha, The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Herbage productivity, nutritive value and nitrogen yields were the highest with mineral fertilizer and followed by swine slurry(SS), and the lowest with swine manure fermented with sawdust(SMFS). As compared with dry matter(DM) yield by application of mineral fertilizer(100%), the DM percents of SMFWS, SMFS and SS were 90.6, 80,9 and 76.8%, respectively. 2. Organic matter(OM) contents of the soil were increased by the applications of swine manure. OM contents were the high set with SMFS and the lowest with mineral fertilizer. 3. The amounts of nitrate leaching by types and application levels of swine manure were the highest in the end of Aug. and early of Sep. during the seasons and ranged from 10 to 25ppm.

  • This study investigated the developmental and ovipositional characteristics of Protaetia brevitarsis individuals that were fed with fermented mulberry sawdust. The developmental periods of larvae were 164.0, 73.3, and 64.8 days at 25, 28, and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The maximum larval weight was 2.94 g at $25^{\circ}C$, and the weight of larvae decreased as temperature increased. The average weight of female adults were 0.94, 0.51, and 0.54 g at 25, 28, and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The weight of male adults was higher than that of females. The addition of 10% or 30% wheat bran to the fermented mulberry sawdust increased larval weight. It was possible to sell larvae from 75 days after mass rearing, when the cumulative rate of larvae that were heavier than 2.5 g was approximately 75%. The average number of eggs per female was 83.2 at $25^{\circ}C$, and this was the highest in the 5th week. Most of the eggs (73%) were oviposited between 3 and 8 weeks after adults emergence.
