  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of mentoring in enhancing the professionalism of low-experience science teachers on their general teaching and science teaching efficacies. The mentoring for low-experience science teachers was conducted on 24 science teachers with less than three years of experience over a nine-month period between April and December, 2016. The questionnaires developed by advanced researches were modified and used to test the teachers' general teaching and science teaching efficacies. As the result of a pre-test, the mean science teaching efficacy score was 3.02 points. In particular, the mean science teaching self-efficacy score was 2.86 points and the mean science teaching outcome expectancy score was higher at 3.17 points. In the domain of science teaching outcome expectancy, the mean for female teachers was higher than that of male teachers, and the mean for middle school teachers was higher than that of high school teachers in every domain. However, this result is not statistically significant. The results of a post-test showed that the mean science teaching efficacy score of mentee teachers increased to 3.08 points over the pre-test. In particular, the mean science teaching self-efficacy score was 3.11 points and the mean science teaching outcome expectancy score was 3.04 points in the post-test. This presents that the mentoring training conducted was effective in improving the science teaching efficacy of mentee teachers.

  • The purpose of this study was to study the student cognition toward the subject of physical education and toward the method of teaching in the class. For the statistical measurement, the population has been chosen as the fifth and sixth grade 319 students(160 male; 159 female) from four different elementary schools in Seoul, Korea. In terms of the teaching method and management of students, the results show that they agree with controlled participation in class and appreciate teachers ability such as explanation, skill demonstration, knowledge, evaluation, maintaining order and participating class. However, there were no statistical difference male and female except for teacher's explanation. This study clearly indicates that the students want more affirmative and cooperative class environment and they expect to be evaluated not only by skill itself, but also by class participation and activity in their physical education class. The cognition and preference toward the class between male and female students did not show any difference in this study. After all, Teachers need to have more understanding, more compassion and more sensitivity towards their elementary students for interesting, effective and affirmative class.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine mathematical performance predictions with gifted behavior ratings by teachers and parents. The participants of this study were 787 elementary 5th and 6th grade gifted students who took the mathematical performance test. This study asked gifted teachers and parents to rate gifted behaviors of these gifted students with using SRBCSS-R (Renzulli et al., 2002, 2009). The results indicated that gifted teachers rated gifted behaviors of the 5th grade gifted students higher than the 6th grade gifted students, except in 'mathematical characteristics.' Gifted teachers rated 'learning' gifted behaviors of male gifted students higher than those of female gifted students. In the meanwhile, parents of the 5th grade gifted students rated gifted behaviors higher than parents of the 6th grade gifted students in 'learning' and 'motivation.' In comparing the gifted behavior ratings by gifted teachers and parents, there were significant differences in 'learning' and 'motivation' ratings. That is, gifted teachers rated significantly higher 'learning' and 'motivation' of gifted students than parents. When this study explored the prediction of gifted behavior ratings by gifted teachers and parents on mathematical performances of gifted students, 'learning' and 'mathematical characteristics' ratings by gifted teachers predicted the mathematical performances of gifted students.

  • This study examines the employment conditions and labour experience of elementary after-school care teachers in South Korea. Based on the empirical data collected through in-depth interviews with after-school care teachers in Gwangju Metropolitan City, the study considers multifaceted problems faced by after-school care teachers in their workplace. The after-school care class is part of educational policies initiated and rapidly expanded by the Ministry of Education, resulting in the substantial increase of non-regular school workers. The irregularization of after-school care teachers illustrates that the common problems faced by female non-regular workers, such as social discrimination, exclusion and inequality, are also transplanted into the typical public sector. In the case of Gwangju Metropolitan City, during the past two years there have been evident increases both in under 15-hour short time contract care teachers and outsourcing of care classes. Temporary part-time contract care teachers suffer relentless job insecurity and experience poor working conditions, exclusion and discrimination within the workplace and labour alienation. In order to minimize the organized resistance of care teachers, school authorities implicitly individualize and isolate care teachers through hierarchization, the division of labour and the spatial division of classes between indefinite and temporary contract teachers.

  • There is no doubt about the importance of teacher knowledge for good teaching. Many researches attempted to conceptualize elements and features of teacher knowledge for teaching in a quantitative way. Unlike existing researches, this article suggests an interpretation of preservice teacher knowledge in the field of geometry using the Shulman - Fischbein framework in a qualitative way. Seven female preservice teachers voluntarily participated in this research and they performed a series of written tasks that asked their subject matter knowledge (SMK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Their responses were analyzed according to mathematical algorithmic -, formal -, and intuitive - SMK and PCK. The interpretation revealed that preservice teachers had overally strong SMK, their deeply rooted SMK did not change, their SMK affected their PCK, they had appropriate PCK with regard to knowledge of student, and they tended to less focus on mathematical intuitive - PCK when they considered instructional strategies. The understanding of preservice teachers' knowledge throughout the analysis using Shulman-Fischbein framework will be able to help design teacher preparation programs.
