  • A survey of 220 male and 233 female residents of Seoul was carried out to investigate why women appeared to be more fearful of crime than men. As expected, female respondents reported higher levels of fear of crime and perceived physical vulnerability to crime. Incivility factors in the neighborhood and perceived possibility of criminal victimization were significant predictors of fear of crime for both male and female respondents. For women more psychological variables such as trait anxiety and age were other significant predictors of their fear of crime, whereas the distance to police station and frequency of watching crime-related TV programs were significant predictors for men's fear of crime.

  • This paper examines the role of gender ideology in early British and American detective fiction focusing on the female detectives. Since a detective's attributes honor and idealize such traditionally masculine qualities as independence, intelligence, heroism, and bravery, the woman detective fiction has potentiality to operate against the established gender norms. The narratives about women in pursuit of justice and order through their criminal investigation can allow women to possess the masculine rationality and power. The subversive possibility inherent in the woman detective fiction is, however, contained by the representation of the female detectives and the negotiation through narratives. A female detective is represented either as unfeminine and thus unattractive and unlikeable or as desperate for survival. Her threatening potentiality is easily dismissed as that of an inadequate woman or a desperate one. The compromise in narratives is effected by the following three ways: first, a female detective is assigned to investigate crimes as an assistant to the male detectives; second, staying within the domestic sphere, she solves crimes by using her expert knowledge of the domestic service; and third, her detective narrative ends with the conventional marriage plot. Confining the female detectives within the conventional feminine roles and domains, the woman detective fiction supports and reestablishes the dominant gender ideology.

  • The study aims to examine the effects of crime on societal anxiety. For this purpose, two studies were conducted. In study 1, the data were collected from 286 students(male 160, female 126) regarding perceived seriousness of crime, estimation of crime occurrence, societal anxiety, and estimation of change in these 3 variables every 3 years from 1993 to 2011. The means of the 3 variables were higher than the midpoint of the scale. And the means of all the 3 variables gradually increased from 1993 to 2011 and the change patterns were very similar. Furthermore, the estimation of crime occurrence and perceived seriousness of crime were significant predictors of societal anxiety. Study 2 was conducted to explore the effect of frequency estimation of the criminal acts on the societal anxiety. The data from 259 subjects(male 141, female 118) were analysed. The occurrence of frequency of 7 types of crimes including 25 criminal acts were estimated and societal anxiety was measured. The results of study 2 showed that only the major crime was significant a predictor of societal anxiety, and among the major crimes, arson was a significant predictor of the dependent variable. Implications and limits of the studies are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the factors that affect the fear of crime by applying the risk interpretation model. Especially, whereas previous studies have not proven micro individual factor that the risk interpretation model had presented, This study includes micro individual elements such as neighborhood factor, perceived risk of crime, fears of crime as main variables. This study utilized secondary data of the National Crime Victimization Survey 2012, conducted by the Korean Institute of Criminology. In this study, multiple regression analysis of two stages and Sobel Test were conducted for verifying the individual influence of each independent variables and identifying the causal relationship between the variables set out in the risk analysis model. As the result, it appeared that the higher level of perceived risk of crime, neighborhood factor, crime experience, education, income cause the higher degree of the fear of crime. On the other hand, the lower degree of age was found to induce the higher level of the fear of crime. In addition, female showed the higher degree of the fear of crime than man. • Recently, as part of the crime prevention measures that focus on spatial characteristics on the determinants of crime-causing, interest in crime prevention (CPTED) through environmental design has been increasing. This study analyzed crime vulnerabilities in Ulju-gun for the purpose of establishing a master plan for crime prevention urban design (CPTED). The 12 indicators, including demographic, socioeconomic, and physical factors, were sampled from prior studies. As a next step, statistical analysis resulted in criminal vulnerability indexes. According to the analysis, districts with a high demographic crime vulnerability indexes were concentrated on apartment complexes, while districts with high socio-economic crime vulnerability indexes have low land prices and high proportion of female population. Also, the districts with high physical crime vulnerability indexes were found to be heavily distributed commercial ones with a large number of entertainment places. However, there was a limit to generalizing the indicators of previous studies to local governments with different regional characteristics. Therefore, further studies should be carried out by establishing additional indicators considering regional characteristics in the future.

Insight obtained through user research using the service design tool confirmed that it has a positive effect on user satisfaction in the production of the application. Based on the results of usability assessment, it is a follow-up research task to propose and commercialize actual production outputs for the prevention of sex crimes against single-person household women by further developing the sex crime prevention mobile applications that are the output of this study.
