  • The current mandatory domestic biodiesel blending ratio is 3.5%, which is planned to be gradually increased to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The aim of this study was to improve domestic self-sufficiency in biodiesel raw oil by conducting a technical review on the possibility of utilizing waste oils, such as soup oil, chicken oil, and leather oil, as biodiesel feedstocks. These waste oils have an acid value that is too high to be converted directly into biodiesel. Therefore, a pretreatment to reduce the acid value is necessary. The neutralization process was examined as a potential technology for reducing the acid value. The oil recovery rate of the soup oil after neutralization was significantly low at 37.6 wt%. The oil recovery rates of leather oil and chicken oil were 66.49 wt% and 79.08 wt%, respectively. Based on biodiesel conversion experiment using waste oil with a reduced acid value, the conversions were analyzed as 89 wt%, 91.1 wt%, and 90.5 wt% for soup oil, leather oil, and chicken oil, respectively. Thus, it is technically possible to use soup oil, leather oil, and chicken oil as raw materials for producing biodiesel.

  • High temperature co-electrolysis of H2O-CO2 mixtures using solid oxide cells has attracted attention as promising CO2 utilization technology for production of syngas (H2/CO), feedstock for E-fuel synthesis. For direct supply to E-fuel production such as hydrocarbon and methanol, the outlet gas ratio (H2/CO/CO2) of co-electrolysis should be controlled. In this work, current voltage characteristic test and product gas analysis were carried out under various reaction conditions which could attain proper syngas ratio.

  • A unicellular green alga was axenically isolated from a tidal pool on Ulleung-do, Korea. Morphological, molecular, and biochemical analyses revealed that the isolate belonged to Auxenochlorella protothecoides. The current study is the first record of this species in Korea. The microalgal strain was named as A. protothecoides MM0011 and its growth, lipid and pigment compositions, and biomass properties were investigated. The strain is able to thrive in a wide range of temperatures ($5{\sim}35^{\circ}C$) and to withstand up to 1.5 M NaCl. The results of GC/MS analysis showed that the isolate was rich in nutritionally important polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Its major fatty acids were linoleic acid (27.6%) and ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid (39.6%). Thus, this indigenous microalga has potential as an alternative source of ${\omega}3$ and ${\omega}6$ PUFAs, which currently come from fish and plant oils. Also, the HPLC analysis revealed that the value-added antioxidant, lutein, was biosynthesized as the accessory pigments by the microalga. A proximate analysis showed that the volatile matter content was 85.6% and an ultimate analysis indicated that the gross calorific value was $20.3MJ\;kg^{-1}$. Since 40.5% of total nitrogen and 27.9% of total phosphorus were removed from the medium, respectively, it also has potential as a feedstock for biofuel applications which could be coupled to wastewater treatment. In addition, the biomass may also serve as an excellent animal feed because of its high protein content (51.4%). Therefore, A. protothecoides MM0011 shows promise for application in production of microalgae-based biochemicals and as a biomass feedstock.

  • In this study, anaerobic co-digestion was carried out using desulfurization sludge and sewage sludge (primary sludge) to evaluate the effects of sulfur compounds in anaerobic digestion. The experiment was carried out in the form of a batch test using 500 mL duran bottle, and the mixing ratio of the feedstock was selected based on the ratio of COD/SO4. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the amount of biogas generated and the yield decreased at the mixing ratio of COD/SO4 20 or less. In particular, below COD/SO4 10, it was lower than seed (283.5 mL) which was set without feedstock to correct biogas generated by itself from seed sludge. Methane yield tended to decrease from a ratio of COD/SO4 20 or less to 0.135 m3/kg VS compared to 0.396 m3/kg VS of COD/SO4 50. In addition, compared to 0.0097 m3/kg VS of hydrogen sulfide yield from COD/SO4 50, the ratio of COD/SO4 20 increased sharply to 0.0223 m3/kg VS, and in particular, the highest result was 0.0855 m3/kg VS in COD/SO4 10. Based on these results, it is judged that the effect of sulfide in anaerobic digestion can have an adverse effect if the COD/SO4 ratio decreases to less than 20.

  • The manufacturing processes of high-precision parts for PGM (Precision Guided Missiles) have not been improved for decades; they still depend on machining or high-precision casting. These processes have an advantage when making small amounts of high-reliability parts in the usual case of a PGM system. In the case of a PGM system, however, which has been made for striking an extensive area, requires hundreds of bomblet units that require mass productivity. In addition, in the case of a part that is very difficult to machine, mass productivity and quality cannot be satisfied at the same time. In particular, cost reduction is an essential precondition to strengthening the export competitiveness of Korean defense articles. This study examined whether the MIM process is appropriate for manufacturing high-precision parts that require mass productivity. The optimized MIM process condition was determined after carrying out fundamental research. Comparisons of the quality of prototype parts with original parts and a functional test of a fuse that had been made with MIM parts highlighted the application possibility of the MIM process.

  • A continuous low temperature ($510^{\circ}C{\sim}530^{\circ}C$) pyrolysis experiment in a pilot-scale of 85.3 kg/hr was carried out by the mixed feedstock of half dried digested sewage sludge and waste plastics. As a result, the amount of pyrolysis gas generated was maximum 68.3% of input dry mass and scored $40.9MJ/Nm^3$ of lower heating value (LHV), and the percentage of air inflow caused by continuous pyrolysis was 19.6%. The oil was produced 4.2% of the input dry mass, and the LHV was 32.5 MJ/kg. The sulfur and chlorine contents, which could cause corrosion of the facility, were found to be 0.2% or more respectively. The carbide generated was 27.5% of the input dry mass which shows LHV of 10.2 MJ/kg, and did not fall under designated waste from the elution test. The concentration of carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides and hydrogen cyanide of emitted flu gas from pyrolysis gas combustion was especially high, and dioxin (PCDDs/DFs) was within the legal standards as $0.034ng-TEQ/Sm^3$. Among the 47 water pollutant contents of waste water generated from dry flue gas condensation, several contents such as total nitrogen, n-H extract and cyanide showed high concentration. Therefore, the merge treatment in the sewage treatment plants after pre-treatment could be considered.

  • This study was conducted to develop a simulation model for estimating the amount of such products as round wood, dimension lumber and the residual wood biomass produced by processing the individual trees of Larix kaempferi. In the model, the stem volume is assessed using the taper equations of the species to estimate the stem forms. Then, the model simulates the conversion processes of logs to round wood or lumber and assesses the maximum amount of the wood products by the lumber dimensions or round wood size. Also the model provides information on the amount of residuals for kerf and slabs produced on the conversion processes for sawn timber or round wood. According to the results of an application of the model to a L. kaempferi process, the trees greater than 12 cm of DBH can be converted to logs for lumber or round wood production. For the trees, of which DBH is available for log conversion, the maximum amount of final products by dimensions were analyzed. In this analysis, production of the bigger dimension lumber was assumed to be preferred to that of the smaller or round wood. This model can be used for assesment of forest economic value through estimation of merchantable volume for the trees, and assessment of mill residues which has the potential to provide significant amount of feedstock for bioenergy production as well.

  • In the entrained flow gasifiers, the slag viscosity is an important parameter determining the operation conditions. The slag viscosities of 9 coals, which were selected and tested as possible gasification feedstock in Korea, were measured in a high temperature slag viscometer under gasification conditions. The type and size of crystalline phases that were known to affect the slag viscosity behavior were also determined. The slag samples were obtained from the IEA dry-feed gasifier. The slags of Alaska Usibelli, Curragh, Kideco, Adaro, Denisovsky, Baiduri and Drayton coals showed the behavior of crystalline slags, while those of Datong and Cypurus glassy slags. When a recommended minimum operating temperature was arbitrarily defined as $T_{1000}$poise/+$50^{\circ}C$ for glassy slags and $T_{cv}$ +$50^{\circ}C$ for crystalline slags, the Drayton slag required the lowest temperature, while Denisovsky slag required the highest. All the slags contained C $r_2$ $O_3$ from the refractory. The crystalline slags with $T_{cv}$ at around 132$0^{\circ}C$ contained large anorthites as the major crystalline phase that would have caused the rapid inrease in viscosity. Denisovsky slag contained many pores which were formed by $O_2$ from F $e_{x}$O reduction..
