  • Piezoelectric actuator is widely used in precision positioning applications due to its excellent positioning resolution. However, serious hysteresis nonlinearity of the actuator deteriorates its open loop positioning capability. Generally, a nonlinear hysteresis model is used in feedforward loop to improve positioning accuracy. In this study, however, a simple lead compensator is proposed as a substitution for a complex nonlinear hysteresis model and tested through experiments for precision position control.

  • A real-time hourly operation model for the flood control of Soyanggang Dam and Hwachon Dam, which are located in the North Han River is developed. The method is based on simulation with a feedforward-feedback control. The feedforward control was mainly concerned with providing the release history from the single dams. The outflows from the single dam operation rules with forecasted inflows were used as the inputs to simulation. And then feedback control is applied to reduce the peak discharge at the junction. Also, sensitivity analysis of the operation model was provided to respect the temporal and spatial distribution of storms to the model.

  • A 6.5 V/50 kA high-frequency switching power supply (HSPS) system composed of 10 power modules is developed to meet the requirements of copper-foil electrolysis. The power module is composed of a two-leg pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier and a DC/DC converter. The DC/DC converter adopts two full-wave rectifiers in parallel to enhance the output. For the two-leg PWM rectifier, the ripple of the DC-link voltage is derived. A composite control method with a ripple filter is then proposed to effectively improve the performance of the rectifier. To meet the process demand of copper-foil electrolysis, the virtual impedance-based current-sharing control method with load current full feedforward is proposed for n-parallel DC/DC converters. The roles of load current feedforward and virtual impedance are analyzed, and the current-sharing control model of the HSPS system is derived. Virtual impedance is used to adjust the current-sharing impedance without changing the equivalent output impedance, which can effectively reduce current-sharing errors. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the structure and control method.

  • This paper presents a longitudinal acceleration controller that can be applied to real vehicles (nonlinear and time-varing systems) with only a simple experiment regardless of the type of vehicle and the control interface structure. The controller consists of a feedforward term for fast response, a zero-throttle acceleration compensation term, and a feedback term (P gain) to compensate for errors in the feedforward term, and another feedback term (I gain) to respond to disturbances such as slope. In order to easily apply it to real vehicles, there are only two tuning parameters, feedforward terms of throttle and brake control. And the remaining parameters can be calculated immediately when the two parameters are decided. The tuning procedure is also unified so that it can be quickly and easily applied to various vehicles. The performance of the controller was evaluated using MATLAB/Simulink and Truksim's European Ben model. In addition, the controller was successfully implemented to 3 medium-sized vehicle (HMC Solati), which is composed of different control interface characteristic. Vehicle driving performance was evaluated on the test track and on the urban roads in Siheung and Seoul.

  • Tn this paper, a novel control circuit applicable to the error sensor loop block in the feedforward linearizer system is proposed. The proposed control circuit is applied to the error sensor loop block, where in the 11dB power range, it operates stably, and makes main carrier signals to be eliminated more than 40dB below 3$\^$rd/ order IM level. In the operating point, the amplitude control error is 0.05∼0.12dB, and the phase control error is smaller than 0.02。. It is verified theoretically as well as experimentally that the control circuit can precisely compensate the variation of nonlinear characteristics in a high power amplifier, due to the variations of input power, operating temperature, humidity and the other system environments.

  • The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a prototype KAFO (Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis) powered by two artificial pneumatic muscles during walking. We had previously built powered AFO (Ankle-Foot Orthosis) and KO (Knee Orthosis) and used it effectively in studies on assistance of plantaflexion and knee extension motion. Extending the previous study to a KAFO presented additional challenges related to the assistance of gait motion for rehabilitation training. Five healthy males were performed gait motion on treadmill wearing KAFO equipped with artificial pneumatic muscles to power ankle plantaflexion and knee extension. Subjects walked on treadmill at 1.5 km/h under four conditions without extensive practice: 1) without wearing KAFO, 2) wearing KAFO with artificial muscles turned off, 3) wearing KAFO powered only in plantaflexion under feedforward control, and 4) wearing KAFO powered both in plantaflexion and knee extension under feedforward control. We collected surface electromyography, foot pressure and kinematics of ankle and knee joint. The experimental result showed that a muscular strength of wearing KAFO powered plnatarfexion and knee extension under feedforward control was measured to be lower due to pneumatic assistance and foot pressure of wearing KAFO powered plnatarfexion and knee extension under feedforward control was measured to be greater due to power assistance. In the result of motion analysis, the ankle angle of powered KAFO in terminal stance phase was found a peak value toward plantaflexion and there were difference of maximum knee flexion range among condition 2, 3 and 4 in mid-swing phase. The current orthosis design provided plantaflexion torque of ankle jonit in terminal stance phase and knee extension torque of knee joint in mid-swing phase.

  • This paper presents feedforward controllers to improve the control performance of the motion and grasping force of a surgical instrument used in an MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) robot. The surgical instrument has a long distance between the drive motors and its active joints. Therefore, the gripper on the instrument is controlled by a cable drive mechanism, which generates a coupled motion between the wrist joint and the grip direction. In order to solve the problem, this paper analyzes the pulley composition of the surgical instrument and proposes feedforward controllers to eliminate the coupled motion. Furthermore, feedforward controllers to regulate the grasping force are proposed to deal with another coupling problem between the grasping force of the instrument and the motion of the instrument joints. The experimental results demonstrate the improved control performance of the motion and grasping force of the instrument.

  • In this paper, a robust two-degree-of-freedom(TDF) the speed control system using $H_{\infty}$ optimization method and real genetic algorithm is proposed for the robust stability and the robust performance in dc servo motor system. This control system composed of feedback and feedforward controller. The feedback(FB) controller with $H_{\infty}$ optimization method is designed for real genetic algorithm that is model matching problem using mixed sensitivity function. The feedforward(FF) controller with $H_{\infty}$optimization method is minimized the error between transfer function of the optimal model and the overall transfer function. The proposed robust two-degree-of-freedom speed control system is simulated to the dc servo motor. By the simulation, feedback controller can obtain the robust stability property and feedforward controller can obtain the robust performance property under modelling error. The performance of the dc servo motor is analyzed by the experiment setting. The validity of the proposed method is verified through being compared with pid(proportional integrated differential)control system design method for the dc servo motor.

  • Self-tuning control algorithms for an input-amplitude constrained system are developed and implemented. Magnitude of control input for small motors is generally restricted to narrow bound due to actuator saturation. The gain-adjusted control algorithm and the bounded-gain control algorithm proposed in this study yield smoother control input variations within the magnitude constraints comparing with the existing Clarke's suboptimal control algorithm. In the gain-adjusted control algorithm, the feedforward gain is adjusted using maximum gain, while in the bounded-gain control algorithm, the feedforward gain is bounded using weighting factor. For the DC servo motor control, the system performances of the proposed algorithms are compared with those of the existing algorithm by computer simulation and experiment. It is shown that the input variations of the proposed algorithms are smoother as compared with the existing algorithm.
