  • Assignable causes producing temporary deviation from the underlying system can influence on process adjustment and process monitoring in dynamic feedback control system. In this paper, the influence of assignable causes on EWMA forecasts and compensatory variables are derived for a dynamic feedback control system. An example is presented to confirm the impact numerically through the analysis of a data.

  • This paper studies on the linearization of a looper system in hot strip mills, that plays an important role in regulating a strip tension or a strip width. Nonlinear dynamic equations of the looper system are analytically linearized by a static feedback linearization algorithm with a compensator. The proposed linear model of the looper is validated by a comparison with a linear model using Taylor's series. It is shown that the linear model by static feedback well describes nonlinearities of the looper system than one using Taylor's series. Furthermore, it is shown from the design of an ILQ controller that the linear model by static feedback is very useful in designing a linear controller of the looper system.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relative effectiveness of immediate feedback and informational prompt on safe sitting behaviors that may cause VDT syndromes. Participants were three white color workers and an ABCB within-subject design was adopted. Safety Posture System was developed specifically for the present study. The system could detect participants' unsafe sitting postures using sensors and provide feedback and prompt on the computer monitors. The results indicated that both immediate feedback and informational prompt considerably increased safe sitting behaviors. More importantly, the immediate feedback was more effective than the informational prompt in increasing safe sitting behaviors.

  • Feedback loop dominance is a key concept to understand structural driving forces of system behavior. In this paper, we propose two kinds of shifts in dominant feedback loops: continuous shifts (CS) and discrete shifts (DS). With the help of questionnaires, we verified three hypotheses regarding cognitive biases in perceiving the shifts in dominant feedback loops: 1) failure in perceiving continuous shifts, 2) tendency of decision making based on discrete shifts, and 3) different perception on the dominant feedback loops between level variables and rate variables. We discussed the implication of these cognitive biases on time delay and timing strategy in decision-making processes.

  • In this paper, we presented WT(wavelet transform) domain feedback canceller in hearing aids system. Most transform methods produce blocking effect and this effect degrades the performance of feedback canceller and overall hearing aids system. As a solution we proposed WT based feedback canceller. The performance of this new approach was compared with LOT (lapped orthogonal transform) based method in the frequency domain. As a result, WT based feedback canceller has not shown the blocking effect and improved convergence rate as compared with the LOT based feedback canceller.

  • The problem of designing a parallel feedforward compensator (PFC) is considered for a class of non-square linear systems such that the closed-loop system is strictly passive. If a given square system has (vector) relative degree one and is weakly minimum phase, the system can be rendered passive by a state feedback. However, when the system states are not always measurable and the given output is considered, passivation (i.e. rendering passive) of a non-minimum phase system or a system with high relative degree cannot be achieved by any other methodologies except by using a PFC. To passivate a non-square system we first determine a squaring gain matrix and design a PFC such that the composite system has relative degree one and is minimum phase. Then the system is rendered strictly passvie by a static output feedback law. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the PFC and the squaring gain matrix are given by the static output feedback formulation, which enables to utilize linear matrix inequality (LMI). As an application of the scheme, an alternative way of replacing the role of velocity measurements is provided for the PD-control law of a convey-crane system.

  • This study aimed to demonstrate the effect of feedback type on users' subjective responses in a voice user interface. Feedback type is classified depend on information characteristic it involves; verification feedback and elaboration feedback. Error type is categorized as recognition error and performance error. Users' subjective assessment about system, feedback acceptance, and intention to use were measured as dependent variables. The results of experiment showed that feedback type has impacts on the subjective assessment(likeability, habitability, system response accuracy) of VUI, feedback acceptance, and intention to use. the results also demonstrated an interaction effect of feedback type and error type on the feedback acceptance. It leads to the conclusion that VUI should be designed with the elaboration feedback about error situation.

  • This paper presents a feedback method for improving the system capacity of MU-MIMO system for downlink channel environments. In a typical conventional feedback method, CVQ, in order to enhance the channel capacity, not only the feedback load is increased but also the quantization of the channel vector is increased, because the channel parameter of each user has to be fed back after quantizing one of the pre-defined N-codebook vectors. In this paper, a novel feedback method is proposed which provides an improved system capacity by transferring the channel state information without increasing the feedback load. Performance of the proposed method is compared to the conventional CVQ method through computer simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed method with 3-bit feedback provides a system capacity comparable to the CVQ method of 6-bit feedback when the number of transmit antennas is 2.

  • In multi-user wireless communication systems, adaptive modulation and scheduling are promising techniques for increasing the system throughput. However, a mass of wireless recourse will be occupied and spectrum efficiency will be decreased to feedback channel quality indication (CQI) of all users in every subcarrier or chunk for adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Thus numerous limited feedback schemes are proposed to reduce the system overhead. The recently proposed compressive sensing (CS) theory provides a new framework to jointly measure and compress signals that allows less sampling and storage resources than traditional approaches based on Nyquist sampling. In this paper, we proposed two novel CQI feedback schemes based on general CS and subspace CS, respectively, both of which could be used in a wireless OFDM system. The feedback rate with subspace CS is greatly decreased by exploiting the subspace information of the underlying signal. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed methods, with the same feedback rate, the throughputs with subspace CS outperform the discrete cosine transform (DCT) based method which is usually employed, and the throughputs with general CS outperform DCT when the feedback rate is larger than 0.13 bits/subcarrier.

  • In this paper, we consider downlink throughput performances of multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with reduced channel information feedback schemes. Specifically, two types of reduced feedback schemes, namely, 1-bit per sub-carrier and selective feedback scheme are considered and compared with each other in terms of average network throughput. Since the strict throughput comparison for given number of feedback bits per user is quite difficult, rather we compare their general behaviors in various system configurations with different system parameters, which can give us an insight into practical system design with those reduced feedback schemes.
