  • We first review some history of the Global Geodynamics Project (GGP), particularly in the progress of ground-satellite gravity comparisons. The GGP Satellite Project has involved the measurement of ground-based superconducting gravimeters (SGs) in Europe for several years and we make quantitative comparisons with the latest satellite GRACE data and hydrological models. The primary goal is to recover information about seasonal hydrology cycles, and we find a good correlation at the microgal level between the data and modeling. One interesting feature of the data is low soil moisture resulting from the European heat wave in 2003. An issue with the ground-based stations is the possibility of mass variations in the soil above a station, and particularly for underground stations these have to be modeled precisely. Based on this work with a regional array, we estimate the effectiveness of future SG arrays to measure co-seismic deformation and silent-slip events. Finally we consider gravity surveys in volcanic areas, and predict the accuracy in modeling subsurface density variations over time periods from months to years.

  • We report a novel extension of 840 nm wavelength- based spectral domain optical tomography to in vivo/real-time human middle ear diagnosis. The system was designed to access the middle ear region with a specifically dedicated handheld probe. The real-time displaying feature was mandatory for in vivo imaging human subject with the handheld probe, and the system could provide about 20 frames per second for 2048 pixels by 1000 A-scans without using any graphics process units under the Labview platform. The inner ear structure of a healthy male volunteer was imaged with the developed system with the axial and lateral resolutions of $15\;{\mu}m$ and $30\;{\mu}m$, respectively. The application of the OCT technology to early diagnose otitis media(OM) is very promising and could be another extensive branch in the OCT field because it provides the depth resolved image including tympanic membrane (TM) and structures below TM whereas the conventional otoscope technique only gives asurface image of the TM.

  • The aim of this research is to investigate the difference in the capturing opportunities for each type of venture companies in the industry undergoing competition of a dominant design and then figure out the reason why they can be successful. Existing studies on venture companies are focused on the way to enhance a firm's competencies by acquiring and combining its resources. However, it is important for startups which have a lack of resources and capabilities to capture the opportunity to survive by understanding a changing environment. This study is focused on opportunity capture and strategic response to a changing environment and attempts to select and observe startup companies which are able to capture the opportunity and enter the market in the industry undergoing dominant design competition. In order to find out its difference in different types of business, we select one case from hardware startups and the other from software startups. According to the result of this study, the hardware startup focuses on market extension by lowering their prices and the software startup strives to induce more users to participate by the universalization of enabling technology so as to extend and standardize their technology in the environment undergoing dominant design competition. This feature of environment leads the difference in the approach for successfully capturing opportunity and thus hardware firms need to recognize the opportunity with profit potential from relationship with a number of cooperative firms while software firms need to identify the opportunity for extension of enabling technology which can be used by many users.

  • The concept of alternative sphere is terminologically various; resistance media, counter media, minjung media, grassroots media, underground media, alternative media, civic media, etc. Each terminology reflect the feature of times and the emphasis of advocator. This article explore the transformation of alternative public sphere and its motive in Korea. In a world, Korea's alternative public sphere has changed as following: resistance media and liberty media in 70', counter media and minjung media in 80', alternative media in 90', and alternative media and civic media in 2000'. The motive of transformation is basically the expansion of civil society and extension of social movement in Korea. As social movement's character has changed, the feature of alternative public sphere has also changed. Minjung movement played key role of social movement in 1980', the alternative public sphere characterized as minjung media or counter media which was based on working class consciousness. After this, According as civil movement have initiative of social movement, the character of alternative public sphere changed by alternative media and civic media. Besides, this article argue that the alternative public sphere of Korea has changed dialectically with social movement.

  • Target detection and recognition problems, in which neural networks are widely used, require translation invariant and real-time processing in addition to the requirements that general pattern recognition problems need. This paper presents a novel architecture that meets the requirements and explains effective methodology to train the network. The proposed neural network is an architectural extension of the shared-weight neural network that is composed of the feature extraction stage followed by the pattern recognition stage. Its feature extraction stage performs correlational operation on the input with a weight kernel, and the entire neural network can be considered a nonlinear correlation filter. Therefore, the output of the proposed neural network is correlational plane with peak values at the location of the target. The architecture of this neural network is suitable for implementing with parallel or distributed computers, and this fact allows the application to the problems which require realtime processing. Net training methodology to overcome the problem caused by unbalance of the number of targets and non-targets is also introduced. To verify the performance, the proposed network is applied to detection and recognition problem of a specific automobile driving around in a parking lot. The results show no false alarms and fast processing enough to track a target that moves as fast as about 190 km per hour.

  • The security feature is essential in wireless sensor network such as intrusion detection or obstacle observation. Sensor nodes must have shared secret between nodes to support security such as privacy. Many methods which provide key pre-distribution need too many keys or support poor security. To solve this problem, probabilistic key pre-distribution is proposed. This method needs a few keys and use probabilistic method to share keys. However, this method does not guarantee key sharing between nodes, and neighbor nodes nay not communicate each other. It leads to waste of network resource such as inefficient routing, extra routing protocol. In this paper, we propose new key distribution method using quorum system which needs a few keys and guarantee key sharing between nodes. We also propose extension of the method which needs fewer keys and guarantee key sharing when node deployment knowledge is well known.

  • Conventional character extraction methods extract character regions using methods such as color reduction, region split and merge and texture analysis from the whole image. Because these methods use many heuristic variables and thresholding values derived from a priori knowledge, it is difficult to generalize them algorithmically. In this paper, we propose a method that can extract character regions using a topographical feature extraction method and a point-line-region extension method. The proposed method can also solve the problems of conventional methods by reducing heuristic variables and generalizing thresholding values. We see that character regions can be extracted by generalized variables and thresolding values without using a priori knowledge of character region. Experimental results show that the candidate region extraction rate is 100%, and the character region extraction rate is over 98%.

  • We utilize AKARI's slitless spectroscopic capability to detect the $3.3{\mu}m$ polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission and measure star formation (SF) activity for various AKARI programs. First, we obtain $2{\sim}5{\mu}m$ spectra of 20 flux-limited galaxies with mixed SED classes in order to calibrate the $3.3{\mu}m$ PAH luminosity ($L_{PAH3.3}$) as a star formation rate (SFR) indicator. We find that $L_{PAH3.3}$ correlates with $L_{IR}$ as well as with the $6.2{\mu}m$ PAH luminosity ($L_{PAH6.2}$). The correlations does not depend on SED classes. We find that ULIRGs deviate from the correlation between PAH luminosities and $L_{IR}$, while they do not for the correlation between PAH luminosities. We suggest possible effects to cause this deviation. On the other hand, how AGN activity is linked to SB activity is one of the most intriguing questions. While it is suggested that AGN luminosity of quasars correlates with starburst (SB) luminosity, it is still unclear how AGN activity is connected to SF activity based on host galaxy properties. We are measuring SFRs for the LQSONG sample consisting of reverberation mapped AGNs and PG-QSOs. This is an extension of the ASCSG program by which we investigated the connection between SB and AGN activities for Seyferts type 1s at z ~ 0.36. While we found no strong correlation between $L_{PAH3.3}$ and AGN luminosity for these Seyferts 1s, $L_{PAH3.3}$ measured from the central part of galaxies correlates with AGN luminosity, implying that SB and AGN activities are directly connected in the nuclear region.
