  • To classify the vehicle targets automatically using thermal images, there are usually two main categories of feature extraction method, local and shape feature extraction methods. Since thermal images have less texture information than color images, the shape feature extraction method is useful when the segmentation results are correct. However, if there are some errors in target segmentation, the shape feature may contain some errors, then the classification accuracy can be decreased. To overcome these problems, in this paper, we propose the segmentation reliability estimation method for target classification. The segmentation reliability can be estimated by using the difference information of average intensities and edge energies between the target and the background area. The estimated segmentation reliability is applied in the decision level fusion method of classification results using both shape and local features. Experiment results using the thermal images of the vehicle targets (main battle tank, armored personnel carrier, military truck, and an estate car) show that the proposed classification method and the segmentation reliability estimation method have a good performance in classification accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient object detection and classification algorithm for video surveillance applications. Previous researches mainly concentrated either on object detection or classification using particular type of feature e.g., Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) or Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) etc. In this paper we propose an algorithm that mutually performs object detection and classification. We combinedly use heterogeneous types of features such as texture and color distribution from local patches to increase object detection and classification rates. We perform object detection using spatial clustering on interest points, and use Bag of Words model and Naive Bayes classifier respectively for image representation and classification. Experimental results show that our combined feature is better than the individual local descriptor in object classification rate.

  • Binary classification has been broadly investigated in machine learning. In addition, binary classification can be easily extended to multi class problems. To successfully utilize machine learning methods for classification tasks, preprocessing and feature extraction steps are essential. These are important steps to improve their classification performances. In this paper, we propose a new learning method based on weighted least squares. In the weighted least squares, designing weights has a significant role. Due to this necessity, we also propose a new technique to obtain weights that can achieve feature transformation. Based on this weighting technique, we also propose a method to combine the learning and feature extraction processes together to perform both processes simultaneously in one step. The proposed method shows the promising performance on five UCI machine learning data sets.

  • In clinical decision support system(CDSS), unlike rule-based expert method, appropriate data-driven machine learning method can easily provide the information of individual feature(clinical test) for disease classification. However, currently developed methods focus on the improvement of the classification accuracy for diagnosis. With the analysis of feature importance in classification, one may infer the novel clinical test sets which highly differentiate the specific diseases or disease states. In this background, we introduce a novel CDSS that integrate a classifier and feature selection module together. Random forest algorithm is applied for the classifier and the feature importance measure. The system selects the significant clinical tests discriminating the diseases by examining the classification error during backward elimination of the features. The superior performance of random forest algorithm in clinical classification was assessed against artificial neural network and decision tree algorithm by using breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease data in UCI Machine Learning Repository. The test with the same data sets shows that the proposed system can successfully select the significant clinical test set for each disease.

  • Musical genre is indispensible in constructing music information retrieval system, such as music search and classification. In general, the spectral characteristics of a music signal are obtained based on a subband decomposition to represent the relative distribution of the harmonic and the non-harmonic components. In this paper, we investigate the subband decomposition parameters in extracting features, which improves musical genre classification accuracy. In addition, the linear projection methods are studied to reduce the resulting feature dimension. Experiments on the widely used music datasets confirmed that the subband decomposition finer than the widely-adopted octave scale is conducive in improving genre-classification accuracy and showed that the feature-dimension reduction is effective reducing a classifier's computational complexity.

  • All application programs, including malware, call the Application Programming Interface (API) upon execution. Recently, using those characteristics, attempts to detect and classify malware based on API Call information have been actively studied. However, datasets containing API Call information require a large amount of computational cost and processing time. In addition, information that does not significantly affect the classification of malware may affect the classification accuracy of the learning model. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method of extracting a essential feature set after reducing the dimensionality of API Call information by applying various feature selection methods. We used CICAndMal2020, a recently announced Android malware dataset, for the experiment. After extracting the essential feature set through various feature selection methods, Android malware classification was conducted using CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) and the results were analyzed. The results showed that the selected feature set or weight priority varies according to the feature selection methods. And, in the case of binary classification, malware was classified with 97% accuracy even if the feature set was reduced to 15% of the total size. In the case of multiclass classification, an average accuracy of 83% was achieved while reducing the feature set to 8% of the total size.

  • This article introduces a unified method of choosing the most explanatory and significant multiway partitions for classification tree design and analysis. The method is derived on the impurity reduction (IR) measure of divergence, which is proposed to extend the proportional-reduction-in-error (PRE) measure in the decision-theory context. For the method derivation, the IR measure is analyzed to characterize its statistical properties which are used to consistently handle the subjects of feature formation, feature selection, and feature deletion required in the associated classification tree construction. A numerical example is considered to illustrate the proposed approach.

  • In this paper, an efficient feature vector extraction method and MLP neural network are utilized to automatically detect and classify power quality disturbances, where the proposed classification procedure consists of the following three parts: i.e., (i) PQ disturbance detection using discrete wavelet transform. (ii) feature vector extraction from the detected disturbance. using several methods, such as FFT, DWT, Fisher's criterion. etc.. and (iii) classification of the corresponding type of each PQ disturbance by recognizing the pattern of the extracted feature vector. To demonstrate the performance and, applicability of the proposed classification algorithm. some test results obtained by analyzing 10-class PQ disturbances are also provided.

  • This study investigated the classification performance of a kNN classifier using the feature selection methods based on document frequency(DF) and collection frequency(CF). The results of the experiments, which used HKIB-20000 data, were as follows. First, the feature selection methods that used high-frequency terms and removed low-frequency terms by the CF criterion achieved better classification performance than those using the DF criterion. Second, neither DF nor CF methods performed well when low-frequency terms were selected first in the feature selection process. Last, combining CF and DF criteria did not result in better classification performance than using the single feature selection criterion of DF or CF.
