  • Recently the synthetic antiferromagnetic layer (SAF) has received much attention because it replaces the pinned layer of the conventional spin valve (CSV) sensors and its overall performance [1], The spin valve (SV) with SAF has the from buffer/F/Cu/APl/Ru/AP2/AF, where F is the soft ferromagnetic layer (typically NiFe with CoFe interfacial doping), AP1 and AP2 are two ferromagnetic layers (typically CoFe alloys) antiferromagnetically coupled through a thin Ru layer. • A series of multicomponent $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1-x}Fe_{x}$ (x=0.00, 0.08, 0.15, 0.22, and 0.30) alloys are prepared and their oystal structure and P-C-T curves are examined. The electrochemical properties of these allqys such as activation conditions, discharge capacity, cycling performance are also investigated. $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1-x}Fe_{x}$ (x=0.00, 0.08, 0.15, 0.22 and 0.30) have the C14 Laves phase hexagonal structure. The electrode was activated by the hot-charging treatment. The best activation conditions were the current density 120 mA/g and the hot-charging time 12h at $80^{\circ}C$ in the case of the alloy with x=0.00. The discharge capacity increased rapidly until the fourth cycle and then decreased. The discharge capacity increased again from the 13th cycle, arriving at 234 mAh/g at the 50th cycle. The discharge capacily just after activation decreases with the increase in the amount of the substituted Fe but the cycling performance is improved. The discharge capacity after activation of the alloy with x=0.00 is 157 mAh/g at the current density 120 mA/g. $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.85}Fe_{0.15}$ is a good composition with a medium quantity of discharge capacities and a good cycling performance. The ICP analysis of the electrolyte for these electrodes after 50 charge-discharge cycles shows that the concentrations of V and Zr are relatively high. Another series of multicomponent $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.85}M_{0.15}$ (M = Fe, Co, Cu, Mo and Al) alloys are prepared. They also have the C14 Laves phase hexagonal structure. The alloys with M = Co and Fe have relatively larger hydrogen storage capacities. The discharge capacities just after activation are relatively large in the case of the alloys with M = Al and Cu. They are 212 and 170 mAh/g, respectivety, at the current density 120mA/g. The $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.85}Co_{0.15}$ alloy is the best one with a relatively large discharge capacity and a good cycling performance.

  • The effects of B additions, alone or in combination with Si, on the microstructure, $DO_3{\rightleftharpoons}B2$ transition temperature($T_c$) and corrosion behavior of Fe-25at%Al alloys were investigated. The raw materials were arc-melted in vacuum and then subjected to the following heat treatments to maximize the $DO_3$ order : homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 48hrs, slowly cooled to $500^{\circ}C$, and held at that temperature for 24hours. Results showed that the B addition to Fe-25at%Al alloys does indeed refine the grain and change from intergranular to transgranular fracture mode at room temperature, indicating a strengthening of grain boundaries. The Fe-25at% Al-1at% B-3at% Si alloy showed the highest $T_c$(${\Delta}T_c=150^{\circ}C$) in this work. However, the effectiveness of Si in raising $T_c$ decreased with more than 5at% Si additions combined with B. Since the preferential corrosion occurs at the precipitates, the corrosion resistance decreased due to the increased amount of precipitates with alloying additions.

  • The effect of Co additive on the electrical properties of Fe-Si alloys prepared by a RF inductive furnace was investigated. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured as a function of the temperature under an Ar atmosphere to evaluate their applicability to thermoelectric energy conversion. The electrical conductivity of the specimens increased as the temperature increased, showing typical semiconducting behavior. The electrical conductivity of Co-doped specimens was higher than that of undoped specimens and increased slightly as the amount of Co additive increased. This is most likely due to the difference in the carrier concentration and the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi (The ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi was detected in spite of an annealing treatment of 100 h at $830^{\circ}C$). Additionally, metallic conduction increased slightly as the amount of Co additive increased. On the other hand, Co-doped specimens showed a lower Seebeck coefficient due to the metallic phase. The power factor of Co-doped specimens was higher than that of undoped specimens. This would be affected more by the electrical conductivity compared to the Seebeck coefficient.

  • The magnetic properties of the amorphous $Fe_{73.5-X}Co_{X}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5}B_{9}(x=2,\;4)$ alloys, fabricated by a single roll rapid quenching technique and annealed at $400~650^{\circ}C$, have been investigated. The optimum annealing temperature is $550^{\circ}C$ for the amorphous $Fe_{71.5}Co_{2}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5}B_{9}$ alloy. The properties of the nanocrystalline $Fe_{71.5}Co_{2}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5}B_{9}$ alloy show the relative permeability of $1.1{\times}10^{4}$ and the coercive force of 0.22 Oe at 1 kHz. When annealed at $600^{\circ}C$, the nanocrystalline $Fe_{69.5}Co_{4}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5)B_{9}$ alloy shows the relative permeability of $1.0{\times}10^{4}$ and the coercive force of 0.19 Oe at 1 kHz. From the X-ray measurement, it is found that the remarkably improved soft magnetic properties are the effect of the formation of $\alpha$-Fe(Si) grain. By the results of FMR exper-imeIlt, the optimum annealing condition is just below temperature which the peak-to-peak line width of FMR spectrum increase rapidly.

  • Recently, a first-principles study led to a prediction that quaternary Heusler compounds, CoFeCrZ (Z = Ga, Ge) are excellent half-metallic ferromagnets. In this study, we investigate the electronic and the magnetic properties at the (001) surfaces of CoFeCrGa and CoFeCrGe by means of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method within generalized gradient approximation. We considered two types of surface termination: CoFe-terminated and CrZ-terminated surfaces, Z being either Ga or Ge. From the calculated total magnetic moments and the local density of states, we found that half-metallicity is not preserved for all the surfaces. But the calculated atomic density of states showed that CrGa-terminated surface of the CoFeCrGa is almost half-metallic. The magnetic moment of the Co, Fe, or Cr atoms at the surface or subsurface layers in each system had very different values.

  • CoFeNi alloys are some of the most studied soft magnetic materials because of their applications as write-head core materials in HDD and MEMS. Ternary CoFeNi films with high saturation magnetic flux density, Bs and low coercivity, He were successfully grown by electrodeposition. The optimal composition was $Co_{30}\;Fe_{34}\;Ni_{36}(at\%)$, and Bs and Hc were 1.9 T and 0.16 A/m, respectively. The XRD and TEM results show that the low Hc of the CoFeNi films was due to very fine crystal particles and mixed fcc and bcc phases.
