  • Arsenic (As) oxidation followed by precipitation from a high-As(III)-containing leaching solution derived from a sulfidic ore was investigated in this study to remove aqueous As from the solution using activated carbon (AC) with air injection as an oxidant. To obtain the initial leaching solution, a domestic sulfidic ore was leached in a sulfuric acid solution at pH 1 and 50℃ for 95 h, and approximately 7 g/L of Fe and 3 g/L of As were leached out. To determine the effect of the oxidative reaction utilizing AC with air injection, the leaching solution was tested under the following five oxidative conditions at an initial pH of 1 and 90℃ for 72 h: air-only injection; air injection with 1, 5, and 10 w/v% of AC addition; and H2O2 addition. The tests in the presence of both air and AC revealed that the oxidation kinetics and As removal were improved by the reaction between the metallic species and the surface group formed on the AC surface. In addition, the greater the amount of AC added, the better was the reaction efficiency, removing 93-94% of As with more than 5 w/v% of AC addition. Finally, X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the precipitate formed from the oxidative reaction was scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O).

  • The increasing sectional stiffness and inducing prestress method of continuous steel box girder using modular CFT members use the restoring force of the CFT module generated from removing the prestressing bars in the CFT module after integrating the prestressed CFT module with the lower steel plate of the steel box girders as a prestressing force. The integrated CFT module in the steel box girder can improve the sectional stiffness of the continuous steel box girder section. To examine the applicability of the introduction of prestressing to the integrated steel box girder using the CFT module, in this study, inducing prestressing tests were conducted using CFT modules for steel plate specimens simulating the lower steel plate of the continuous steel box girder, and FE analyses were conducted for inducing prestressing tests. In addition, to confirm the effect of inducing prestress to the actual steel box girder and increasing sectional stiffness by the CFT modules, FE analyses for the actually applicable continuous steel box section were carried out depending on prestressing force and sectional conditions of the CFT modules, FE analysis results were compared.

  • The ceramic balls impregnated with $20{\sim}40nm$ sized Ag colloid were examined for heavy metals absorption and antibacterial activities in the drinking water. The preparation conditions of ceramic ball that the porosity was excellent were as follows: starting material: 85 wt% $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$, binder: 5 wt% PVA and 15 wt% ${\alpha}-Ca_3(PO_4)_2$, heating temperature: $1000^{\circ}C$, duration: 3 hrs. The ceramic balls obtained under these conditions showed specific surface area of $110m^2/g$, pore size of $120{\mu}m$ and porosity of 80%. Also, as the results of a performance test on a rate of adsorbing and removing heavy metals in the drinking water by using the.AAS, heavy metals such as Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu were removed to the extent that their content became 0.03mg/l or lower after 1 day and they showed an excellent bactericidal activity that all coliforms were killed after 3 hrs.

  • Nitrate is a common contaminant in groundwater aquifer. The present study investigates the performance of the bipolar zero valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) packed bed electrolytic cell in removing nitrate in different operating conditions. The packing mixture consists of ZVI as electronically conducting material and silica sand as non-conducting material between main cathode and anode electrodes. In the continuous experiments for the simulated wastewater (contaminated groundwater, initial nitrate about 30 mg/L as N and electrical conductivity about 300 ${\mu}S/cm$), over 99% removal of nitrate was achieved in the applied voltage 600 V and at the flow rate of 20 mL/min. The optimum packing ratio (v/v) and flow rate were determined to be 1:1~2:1 (silica sand to ZVI), 30 mL/ min respectively. Effluent pH was proportional to nitrate influx concentration, and ammonia which is the final product of nitrate reduction was about 60% of nitrate influx. Magnetite was observed on the surface of the used ZVI as major oxidation product.

  • ZZFCa sorbents for hot gas desulfurization in IGCC were prepared by adding calcium oxide to ZZF sorbent in order to improve its attrition resistance in this study. ASTM attrition test for the sorbent was performed at several different weight percentages of CaO to investigate the attrition characteristics of ZBFCa sorbents as a function of CaO content. Attrition index of ZZF without CaO was 28.3% and its collected attrition index was 10.8%. ZZFCa-3 containing 3 wt% CaO showed the lowest attrition index (AI=17.3%, CAI=8.8%) in the test. From the results of SEM morphologies and particle size distribution measurements, ZZFCa-3 maintained a fine shape and a desirable average particle size even after attrition test. In the experiments of sulfidation/regeneration for ZZFCa-3 sorbent concentration of hydrogen sulfide in coal gas was lowered from 10000 ppm to below 1 ppm. Sulfur removing capacity was about 28.8 g S/100 g sorbent. Neither formation of CaSO$_4$ was observed in XRD measurement nor SO$_2$ slippage was observed during sulfidation process.

  • The CoCrMo as-built alloys prepared by 3D-printing process are studied on tensile strength, wear resistance, crystal structure and microstructure after complex heat-treatment including HIP. In this study, HIP treatment for removing micropores, ambient heat-treatment for formation of metal carbides, and solution heat-treatment for homogenization of the created metal carbides were tried and characterized for applying to artificial joint. The complex heat-treatment effects of the CoCrMo as-built alloys prepared by 3D-printing process were owing to the densification during HIP, formation of metal carbides and homogenization of the created metal carbides. The effects of the complex heat-treatment were confirmed by XRD, FE-SEM and EDS.

  • This study was investigated to improve the phosphorus release and water quality by transformation of sedimentary P fraction for application of $CaO_2$. For the experiment, 0.5% (w/w) of $CaO_2$ was homogenized in the sediment and incubated with the control for 20 days. The analytical results showed that pH increased with $CaO_2$ and redox potential (ORP) was improved in the sediment of the reactor. The growth rate of chlorophyll-a was lower in the $CaO_2$ reactor and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) of overlying water maintained higher than that of the control. Total phosphorus (T-P) concentration in the overlying water increased from the initial concentration to 0.304mg/L in the control at 20 days. The reactor of $CaO_2$ was lowered by 29.3%. Ex-P, Fe-P and Ca-P in sediment P fraction were increased with the $CaO_2$. The formation of bound Fe-P and Ca-P in the sediments seemed to control the release of P by removing the Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP) presented in the pore water. From the result, this indicated that the reduction of P release from the sediments seems to be effective in suppressing the eutrophication of P and improving the oxygen condition in the water quality with the application of $CaO_2$.

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the efficiency of WaveOne Primary files (Dentsply Sirona) for removing root canal fillings with 2 types of movement: reciprocating (RCP) and continuous counterclockwise rotation (CCR). Materials and Methods: Twenty mandibular incisors were prepared with a RCP instrument (25.08) and filled using the Tagger hybrid obturation technique. The teeth were retreated with a WaveOne Primary file and randomly allocated to 2 experimental retreatment groups (n = 10) according to movement type: RCP and CCR. The root canals were emptied of filling material in the first 3 steps of insertion, until reaching the working length. The timing of retreatment and procedure errors were recorded for all samples. The specimens were scanned before and after the retreatment procedure with micro-computed tomography to calculate the percentage and volume (mm3) of the residual filling material. The results were statistically evaluated using paired and independent t-tests, with a significance level set at 5%. Results: No significant difference was found in the timing of filling removal between the groups, with a mean of 322 seconds (RCP) and 327 seconds (CCR) (p < 0.05). There were 6 instrument fractures: 1 in a RCP motion file and 5 in continuous rotation files. The volumes of residual filling material were similar (9.94% for RCP and 15.94% for CCR; p > 0.05). Conclusions: The WaveOne Primary files used in retreatment performed similarly in both RCP and CCR movements. Neither movement type completely removed the obturation material, but the RCP movement provided greater safety.

  • In this study the optimum conditions for recovery of valuable metal in Electric Arc Furnace Dusts were investigated. 2M of $H_2SO_4$, 1~5 of solid/liquid ratio, 0~180 min of leaching time has been established for leaching condition, and for electrowinning, each of Pt, C, Zn, Pb anode and Zn, Cu cathode was compared respectively at pH 2, 4 and 6. The result of elemental analysis of Zn crystal, a lagre quantity of Fe and H has been observed with Zn and other heavy metal, therefore, impurities removing process would be requir for enhancing purity of Zn. As the result, about 60% of Zn has been recovered under condition of 2 M of $H_2SO_4$, 1:2 of S/L ratio at 120 min, and Pt or Pb for anode, Zn for cathode has been shown the highest efficiency of electrowinning at pH 6.

  • We obtained near-infrared spectra of 26 SDSS quasars at 0.7${\sim}10^{{\wedge}{10}}M{\odot}$ to critically examine the systematic effects involved with their mass estimations. We find that active galactic nuclei (AGNs) heavier than $10^{{\wedge}{10}}M{\odot}$ often display double-peaked $H{\alpha}$ emission, extremely broad FeII complex emission around MgII, and highly blueshifted and broadened CIV emission. The weight of this evidence, combined with previous studies, cautions against the use of MBH values based on any emission line with a width over 8000 km/s. Also, the MBH estimations are not positively biased along the presence of ionized narrow line outflows, anisotropic radiation, or the use of line FWHM instead of ${\sigma}$ for our sample, and unbiased with variability, scatter in broad line equivalent width, or obscuration for general type-1 quasars. Removing the systematically uncertain MBH values, ${\sim}10^{{\wedge}{10}}M{\odot}$ BHs in 1${\sim}10^{{\wedge}{9.5}}M{\odot}$ BHs, although current observations support they are intrinsically most massive, and overmassive to the host's bulge mass.
