  • Effects of the Cu and K addition and the reduction condition of Fe-based catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch reaction are studied in a continuous flow reactor in this research. The catalysts for the reaction were prepared by homogeneous precipitation followed by incipient wetness impregnation. Physicochemical properties of the $Al_2O_3$ supported Fe-based catalysts are characterized by various methods including X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Catalytic activities and stabilities of the Fe/Cu/K catalyst are investigated in time-on-stream for an extended reaction time over 216 h. It is found that a reduction of the catalysts using a mixture of CO and $H_2$ can promote their catalytic activities, attributed to the iron carbides formed on the catalysts surface by X-ray diffraction analysis. The addition of Cu induces a fast stabilization of the reaction reducing the time to reach at the steady state by enhancement of catalytic reduction. The addition of K to the catalysts increases the CO conversion, while the physical stability of catalyst decreases with potassium loading up to 5%. The Fe/Cu (5%)/K (1%) catalyst shows an enhanced long term stability for the Fischer-Tropsch reaction under the practical reaction condition, displaying about 15% decrease in the CO conversion after 120 h of the operation.

  • $Mo/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3catalysts$ modified with Fe, Co, and Ni were prepared by impregnation method and catalytic activity for water gas shift reaction was examined. The optimum amount of Mo loaded for the reaction was 10 wt% $MoO_3$ to ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3.$ The catalytic activity of $MoO_3/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3was$ increased by modifying with Fe, Co, and Ni in the order of Co${\thickapprox}$ Ni > Fe. The optimum amounts of Co and Ni added were 3 wt% based on CoO and NiO to 10 wt% $MoO_3/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, restectively. The TPR (temperature-programmed reduction) analysis revealed that the addition of Co and Ni enganced the reducibility of the catalysts. The results of both catalytic activity and TPR experiments strongly suggest that the redox property of the catalyst is an important factor in water gas shift reaction on the sulfided Mo catalysts, which could be an evidence of oxy-sulfide redox mechanism.

  • The influence of phosphorous precursors, $NH_4H_2PO_4$, $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$, $H_3PO_4$, $(C_2H_5)_3PO_4$, and $P_2O_5$, on the catalytic performance of the $BiFe_{0.65}MoP_{0.1}$ catalysts in the oxidative dehydrogenation of 1-butene to 1,3-butadiene was studied. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, $N_2$-sorption, ICP, SEM and TPRO analyses. It was not observed big difference on the physical properties of catalysts in accordance with used different phosphorous precursors, however, the catalytic performance was largely depended on the nature of the phosphorous precursors. Of various precursors, the $BiFe_{0.65}MoP_{0.1}$ oxide catalyst, which was prepared from a phosphoric acid precursor, showed the best catalytic performance. Conversion and yield to butadiene of the catalyst showed 79.5% and 67.7%, respectively, after 14 h on stream. The cation of phosphorous precursors was speculated to affect the lattice structure of the catalysts during catalyst preparation and this difference was influenced on the re-oxidation ability of the catalysts. Based on the results of TPRO, it was proposed that the catalytic performance could be correlated with re-oxidation ability of the catalysts.

  • Research on induction heating catalyst system was conducted to solve problems of the existing catalyst system for removing volatile organic compounds. In the present study, three types of Ni-based commercial catalysts were employed, and induction heating reaction characteristics including the catalyst volume, composition, heat treatment atmosphere, and position in the coil were investigated. The composition and volume of the catalyst affected the exothermic and toluene oxidation performance in the induction heating system. In particular, the Fe-added catalyst showed high exothermic performance compared to that of other catalysts consisting of more than 99% Ni, but had low toluene oxidation performance. In addition, the heat treatment in an air atmosphere of the Ni-based catalyst drastically reduced the performance. In the induction heating system, the optimal condition for the catalyst was to be located in the center of the coil. The catalyst showed similar activities among seven repeated experiments under the optimal condition derived from this work.

  • In this study, the reducing agent hydrazine and precipitator NaOH were used with $NiCl_2$ as a starting material in order to compound Ni-based material with spherical nano characteristics; resulting material was used as an anode for SOFC. Synthetic temperature, pH, and solvent amounts were experimentally optimized and the synthesis conditions were confirmed. Also, a 0 ~ 0.15 mole ratio of metal(Co, Fe) was alloyed in order to increase the catalyst activation performance of Ni and finally, spherical nano $Ni_{(1-x)}-M_{(x=0{\sim}0.15)}$(M = Co, Fe) alloy materials were compounded. In order to evaluate the catalyst activation for hydrocarbon fuel, fuel gas(10%/$CH_4$+10%/Air) was added and the responding gas was analyzed with GC(Gas Chromatography). Catalyst activation improvement was confirmed from the 3% hydrogen selectivity and 2.4% methane conversion rate in $Ni_{0.95}-Co_{0.05}$ alloy; those values were 4.4% and 19%, respectively, in $Ni_{0.95}-Fe_{0.05}$ alloy.

  • The improved high-performance Fe-based perovskite-type oxides ($La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}M_xFe_{1-x}O_3$, M = Cu, Cr, Ni) were synthesized by a citrate method and characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD and NMR spectroscopy analyses. The characterization analyses revealed that the stoichiometric amounts of lattice oxygen were existed in all of perovskite samples except for a nickel-doped perovskite. Fe-based perovskites exhibited a surprising result for ortho-para $H_2$ spin conversion reaction, indicating two orders of magnitude higher conversions and conversion rates than commercial $Fe_2O_3$. It was considered that this conversion difference might be attributed to the presence of oxygen vacancies in Fe-based perovskites prepared in this study.

  • One of the main challenges of electrochemical water splitting technology is to develop a high performance, low cost oxygen-evolving electrode capable of substituting a noble metal catalyst, Ir or Ru based catalyst. In this work, CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with sub-44 nmsize of a inverse spinel structure for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) were synthesized by the injection of KNO3 and NaOH solution to a preheated CoSO4 and Fe(NO3)3 solution. The synthesis time of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was controlled to control particle and crystallite size. When the synthesis time was 6 h, CoFe2O4 nanoparticles had high conductivity and electrochemical surface area. The overpotential at current denstiy of 10 mA/㎠ and Tafel slope of CoFe2O4 (6h) were 395 mV and 52 mV/dec, respectively. In addition, the catalyst showed excellent durability for 18 hours at 10 mA/㎠.

  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process is a typical method for synthesizing hydrocarbons from syngas and is mainly known as iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co) catalysts. Currently, some technologies such as CTL (Coal to Liquid) and GTL (Gas to Liquid) are operated on a commercial scale depending on the products, but the research to produce light hydrocarbons and middle distillates directly has not been commercialized. Therefore, in this study, domestic studies for direct production of light hydrocarbons and middle distillates are summarized and the effect of catalyst preparation, promoter addition, zeolite combination on product selectivity is investigated.

  • The surface of polysulfone membranes has been modified using the fluorine chemicals, ITFE (2-iodo-1,1,1-trifluoro-ethane F.W.=209.94) and PFPI (1H,1H-pentafluoro-n-propyl iodide F.W.=259.95), and PFI (1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorohexyl iodide, F.W.=373.99) based on Friedel-Crafts reaction mechanism with varying reaction temperatures, reaction time, and catalysis types. The resulting membranes were characterized through mainly the contact angle measurement and pure water permeability. The smaller reactant shows the larger contact angles. FeBr$_3$ catalyst is more effective than AlCl$_3$. Typically, the PS film treated with ITFE at $25^{\circ}C$ under FeBr$_3$ catalyst showed the contact angle 78.5$^{\circ}C$ which indicated 10% over the value of unreacted PS films. More than 50% of pure water flux 8.0 g/$m^2$hr, reduced at reaction time 10 min relative to the original flux, 3.49 g/$m^2$hr.

  • The lack of homogeneously sized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) hinders their many applications because properties of SWNTs, in particular electrical conduction, are highly dependent on the diameter and chirality. Therefore, the preferential growth of SWNTs with predetermined diameters is an ultimate objective for applications of SWNTs-based nanoelectronics. It has been previously emphasized that a catalyst size is the one crucial factor to determine the CNTs diameter in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, giving rise to several attempts to obtain size-controllable catalyst by diverse methods, such as solid supported catalyst, metal-containing molecular nanoclusters, and nanostructured catalytic layer. In this work, diameter-controlled CNTs were synthesized using a nanostructured catalytic layer consisting of Fe/Al2O3/Si substrate. The CNTs diameter was controlled by structural modification of Al2O3 supporting layer, because Al2O3 supporting layer can affect agglomeration phenomenon induced by heat-driven surface diffusion of Fe catalytic nanoparticles at growth temperature.
