  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the tendency toward depression and fatigue in early postpartum women and to determine the relationship between the symptoms of these conditions, according to the women's Sasang constitutions. Methods: In this study, 73 healthy postpartum women were analyzed according to Sasang constitution: 33 Taeeumin, 22 Soyangin, and 18 Soeumin. Symptoms of depression and fatigue were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale-K(EPDS-K) and the Fatigue Continuum Form(FCF), respectively, on the fourth(time 1), seventh(time 2), and fifteenth(time 3) days postpartum. Sasang constitutional types were determined by a medical specialist, using results from the Two Step Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Diagnosis(TS-QSCD). Results: 1. The overall depressive symptoms and fatigue scores decreased significantly over time in early postpartum women. 2. The mean scores for the EPDS and FCF were higher in the Soeumin group than in other groups. The scores for EPDS and FCF dropped sharply in comparison to a former level in the Soyangin group. And the mean EPDS score was lower in the Soyangin group than in other groups. The EPDS and FCF scores in the Taeeumin group changed slightly over time. However, these results were not statistically significant according to Sasang constitution. 3. The relationship between postpartum depression and fatigue showed a significant positive correlation. Conclusions: These results suggest that, in early postpartum women, depressive symptoms and fatigue differ according to Sasang constitution.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of job stress, fatigue symptoms and job satisfaction on turnover intention among dental hygienists. Overall, 516 dental hygienists who work in dental clinics were surveyed using a standardized self-administered questionnaire from April 1 to June 30, 2015. Mean turnover intention was compared to each independent variable tested by t-tests and ANOVA, correlation among turnover intention, job stress, fatigue symptoms and job satisfaction was calculated by Pearson's correlation coefficient, and covariance structure analysis was used to evaluate whether turnover intention was associated with job stress, fatigue symptoms and job satisfaction. Turnover intention was significantly higher among subjects with higher job stress and fatigue, as well as those with lower job satisfaction. Additionally, turnover intention was significantly positively correlated with job stress and fatigue symptoms, while turnover intention was negatively correlated with job satisfaction. Covariance structure analysis revealed job stress had a greater impact on turnover intention than fatigue and job satisfaction, high job stress and fatigue, the lower the job satisfaction showed that the effect of increasing the turnover intention. Overall, these results indicate that turnover intention of dental hygienists are more heavily influenced by job satisfaction and job stress than fatigue. Therefore, efforts are needed to reduce job stress and fatigue, as well as to improve job satisfaction to reduce the degree of turnover intention among dental hygienists.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to test whether sleep disturbance mediates the effect of pain on fatigue, whether fatigue mediates the effect of pain on depression, and whether fatigue mediates the effect of sleep disturbance on depression. Methods: This study was conducted from September 12th to December 20th, 2011. One hundred eighty-eight breast cancer patients were recruited from D city and S city in Korea. The instruments used in this study were the pain, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and depression scales. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and mediation pathway with the SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs. Results: There was correlation among pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression. Mediation analyses indicated that pain influences fatigue. sleep disturbance, and depression directly as well as indirectly. Sleep disturbance influences fatigue and depression directly, also fatigue influences depression directly. But sleep disturbance had no direct effect on depression. Conclusion: Significant correlations among the four symptoms supported the existence of the symptom cluster. Effects of pain on fatigue was partially mediated by sleep disturbance, also effects of pain on depression was partially mediated by fatigue. However, the effects of sleep disturbance on depression was fully mediated by fatigue.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study were to describe the level of activities of daily living (ADLs) and fatigue of stroke patients and to identify related factors of ADLs and fatigue. Method: A sample of 132 were used who were recovering from stroke. The face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect data. The levels of ADLs and fatigue were evaluated using the Modified Barthel Index and Kim's fatigue scale respectively. A series of t-test and analysis of variance analyses were conducted to examine study purposes using SPSS 15.0. Results: The levels of fatigue and ADLs were 65.6 (SD=16.52) and 74.6 (SD=22.32) respectively. Significantly poorer ADLs were found: women (t=2.05, p=.001), older people aged ${\geq}$ 70 years (F=2.74, p=.046), the duration of onset (F=4.34, p=.006), the use of assist devices (F=35.64, p<.001), the parts of paralysis (F=4.25, p=.007), the time to attack (F=3.34, p=.039), and accompanying symptoms (F=15.23, p<.001). There was a significant difference in fatigue with patients with lower accompanying symptoms having lower fatigue (F=11.08, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest gender, the duration from onset, the use of assist device, the parts of paralysis, the time to attack and accompanying symptoms were significant factors of the ADLs and fatigue post stroke. These factors should be considered when developing and testing nursing intervention programs for stroke survivors.
