The purpose of this raper is to assess the benefits of frequency domain fatigue analysis and compare it with more conventional time domain techniques. The multi-body dynamic analysis, FE analysis and fatigue life prediction technique are applied for the frequency domain fatigue analysis. To obtain the dynamic load history used in the frequency domain fatigue analysis, the computer simulations running over typical road Profiles are carried out by utilizing vehicle dynamic model. The fatigue life estimation for the rear suspension system of small-sized passenger car is performed by using resonance durability analysis technique, and the estimation results are compared with the conventional quasi-static durability analysis results. For the pothole simulation, the percent changes, of the fatigue life between the two durability analysis techniques don't exceed 10%. But for the Belgian road simulation because of the resonance effect, the fatigue life using the resonance durability analysis technique are much smaller estimated than the quasi-static durability analysis results.
An integrated fatigue strength assessment system was computerized. The system developed consists of 9 modules: user interface, cycle counting, load history construction, data searching, fatigue properties estimation, fatigue data analysis, true stress and strain analysis, expert system for crack initiation life prediction, fatigue crack initiation and propagation life prediction. Fatigue strength database also was included in this system. The fatigue expert system helps a beginner to predict a fatigue crack initiation life in fatigue strength assessment. The expert system module in this system is developed on the personal computer by using C language and UNiK, an expert system developing tool. To evaluate the system, the results of test under variable loading of SAE and failure data from a field were analyzed. The evaluation show that the system provided fatigue life prediction within 3-scatter band and gave reasonable predictions. To get more accurate predictions of fatigue life without fatigue properties, we recommend utilizing the system along with the fatigue strength database.
The strength and fatigue life of Satin and Twill-woven CF/epoxy composite(CFRP) have been investigated. Damage mechanism fatigue method has been used to assess fatigue damage accumulation. It is based on measured residual stiffness and residual strength of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) laminates under cyclic loading. Fatigue damage evolution in composite laminates and predict fatigue life of the laminates were simulated by finite element analysis(FEA) method. The stress analysis was carried out in MSC patran/Nastran. A modified Hashin's failure criterion di rmfjapplied to predict the failure of the experimental data of fatigue life but a Ye-delamination criterion was ignored because of 2D modeling. Almost linear stiffness and strength degradation were observed during most of the fatigue process. These stress distribution data were adopted in the simulation to simulate fatigue behavior and estimate life of the laminates. From the results, the predicted fatigue life is more conservatively estimated than the experimental results.
In this paper, global full 3D finite element analysis fatigue models are constructed for flip-chip BGA on board to predict the creep fatigue life of solder joints during the thermal cycling test. The fatigue model applied is based on Darveaux's empirical equation approach with non-linear viscoplastic analysis of solder joints. It was estimated by the creep life as the variations of the four kinds of thermal cycling test conditions, pad structure, composition and size of solder ball. The shortest fatigue life of results was obtained at the thermal cycling testing condition of -65℃ ∼ 150℃. It was increased about 3.5 times in comparison with that of 0℃ ∼ 100℃. As the change of pad structure at the same other conditions, the fatigue life of SMD structure increased about 5.7% as compared with NSMD structure. Consequently, it was confirmed that the fatigue life became short as the creep strain energy density increased in solder joint.
The spider of a drum washing machine receives the repeated fatigue loadings during laundering. Although the spider is designed statically safely, it often happens fatigue failure. Therefore it requires the safe design for fatigue and needs the prediction of quantitative fatigue life. The S-N diagram for a spider material is developed by fatigue test and statistical analysis. The stresses are measured directly from strain gages on the spider. To predict the fatigue life of spider, the rainflow counting method and Miner's rule are used. The data for fatigue life are analyzed statistically. From these data, reliability estimation for fatigue life can be done and also, equivalent fatigue life can be obtained. It will be applied to make and improve to a short period for design and prototype test.
Generally, the life of casting mold is limited by fatigue fracture or dimensional inaccuracy originated from wear in high temperature. Although recent research of metallic materials in high temperature fatigue have been much accomplished, many studies on brittle material as a die steel in high temperature fatigue does not have been reported. Especially, the study on the fatigue behavior over the transformation temperature is not studied sufficiently because of its difficult analysis and experiment. Therefore, reliable results of brittle material in high temperature fatigue behavior are needed. In this paper, stress-strain curves and stress-life curves in die STD61 steel are carefully examined between room temperature and 90$0^{\circ}C$, as the basic experimental data are used to predict from fatigue life of casting mold.
In this paper, the technique to reinforce the durability performance of structure using the sensitivity information for the frame structure is applied. The fatigue life calculation for the frame structure is performed from the quasi-static and transient analysis and the characteristics of two methods are compared for the fatigue analysis. Then the reinforcement technique is applied. First, some design variables related to the locations of fatigue failure is selected. Then sensitivities of fatigue life at fracture points with respect to the variation of design variables are calculated and the vector composed of gaps between the target life and initial life cycles is calculated. If the number of fatigue fracture points is same as the number of design variables, the variations of the design variables are calculated from the linear algebraic equation. If not, the variations of the design variables are calculated from the optimization formulation with the constraints.
Analytical model to calculate the contact fatigue life of rough surface is presented in this paper. The effect of surface roughness can be calculated by this model. Computational method and the theoretical basis are also discussed. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions; the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. Mesoscopic multiaxial fatigue criterion which can yield satisfactory results for non-proportional loading is then applied to predict fatigue damage. Suitable counting method and damage rule were used to calculate the fatigue life of random loading caused by rough surface. As a result of analysis the relationship between the life and the roughness as well as the most probable depth of the crack initiation is calculated.
The next generation of diesel engine can operate at high injection pressure up to 1,800bar. The common rail pipe must have higher internal strength because it is directly influenced by the high-pressure fuel. Folding defects in the Common rail pipe can not ensure the structural safety. Therefore, Preform design and fatigue-life analysis are very important for preventing the head of the common rail pipe from folding in the heading process and for predicting fatigue life according to the amount of folding. In this study, a closed form equation to predict fatigue life was suggested by Goodman theory and pressure vessels theory in ASME Code in order to develop an optimization technique of the heading process and verified its reliability through fatigue-structural coupled field analysis. The results calculated by the theory were in good agreement with those obtained by the finite element analysis.
