Cold-expanded austenitic high nitrogen steel (HNS) was subjected to investigate the effects of grain size on the stress-controlled high cycle fatigue (HCF) as well as the strain-controlled low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties. The austenitic HNSs with two different grain sizes (160 and $292{\mu}m$) were fabricated by the different hot forging strain. The fine-grained (FG) specimen exhibited longer LCF life and higher HCF limit than those of the coarse-grained (CG) specimen. Fatigue crack growth testing showed that crack propagation rate in the FG specimen was the same as that in the CG specimen, implying that crack propagation rate did not affect the discrepancy of LCF life and HCF limit between two cold-expanded HNSs. Therefore, it was estimated that superior LCF and HCF properties in the FG specimen resulted from the retardation of the fatigue crack initiation as compared with the CG specimen. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the effective grain size including twin boundaries are much finer in the FG specimen than that in the CG specimen, which can give favorable contributions to strengthening.

Rotating bending fatigue tests of an authentic steel 304 were performed at various temperatures such as room temperature, $538^{\circ}$ and $593^{\circ}C$. The plastic replica method was also applied in order to estimate the fatigue life on the basis of serial observation of small fatigue crack initiation and growth on the pit specimen surface. The fatigue crack growth behavior of 304 stainless steel was investigated within the frame work of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics within a narrow scatterband in spite of different stress levels at elevated temperature as at room temperature. The growth law of small surface crack is determined uniquely by the term. $\DELTA\sigma^{n}a$ where $\DELTA\sigma$ is the stress amplitude, a is the crack length, and n is a constant. It is found that the small crack growth behavior is basically equivalent to the S-$N_{f}$ relationship, where S and $N_{f}$ are stress and number of cycles to failure, and the fatigue life prediction is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Fatigue failure of an autofrettaged pressure vessel with a groove at the outside surface occurs owing to the fatigue crack initiation and propagation at the groove root. In order to predict the fatigue life of the autofrettaged pressure vessel, residual stresses in the autofrettaged pressure vessel were evaluated using the finite element method, and the fatigue properties of the pressure vessel steel were obtained from the fatigue tests. Fatigue life of a pressure vessel obtained through summation of the crack initiation and propagation lives was calculated to be 2,598 cycles for an 80% autofrettaged pressure vessel subjected to a pulsating internal pressure of 424 MPa.

Fatigue crack initiation life has a wide scatter and this makes the fatigue design of structural members difficult. In order to make the fatigue life distribution clear, it is required to prepare a large number of specimens and repeat the fatigue tests under the same loading condition. Such fatigue tests usually take much time and cost. In this study, a fatigue testing method using a multi-notched test specimen for the purpose of estimating the distribution function of fatigue crack initiation life by small number of fatigue tests is used. The purpose of this study is to verify the above fatigue testing method of a multi-notched specimen by using Bayesian reliability analysis, Least square method and Skewness method for the determination of unknown Weibull parameters. The multi-notched specimen is a specimen in which several tens of statistically identical notches are prepared.

Using the fatigue test results obtained in the SAE Fatigue Cumulative Damage Test Program, prediction methods of fatigue crack initiation life for notched members undergoing random loaming histories were discussed in detail. Conventional fatigue life predictions based on so-called modified Miner's rule were found to be apt to give nonconservative estimate, due to lack of sufficient consideration for stress-interaction effect. A modified .epsilon.-N curve concept was proposed to account for the stress-interaction effect. The predicted fatigue life based on the modified .epsilon.-N curve concept was in good agreement with the experimental results of SAE Test Program. Specifically for the cases when fatigue data was not available at hand, was proposed a procedure to give conservative estimate of fatigue life.

Thin walled tubular specimens of 0.45% structural carbon steel were used in the bizxial tests. Biaxial fatigue tosts were conducted on strain control including fully reversed tension-compression and in phase tension torsion loadings. The predictions of the biaxial fatigue life were based upon the uniaxial low cycle fatigue test results. Fatigue lives were ranged from 10$\^$2/to 10$\^$5/cycles. Four multiaxial strain based theories have been developed to correlate biaxial fatigue experimdntal results. These theories showed good correlatins except for maximum shear strain theory. In uniaxial tests, crack behavior was observed that crack initiated in the maximum shear strain direction and propagated in the direction perpendicular to principal stross. But, in biaxial tests, both crack initiation and growth occured on the maximum shear strain direction only.

Fatigue fracture in machine components is produced by surface micro-crack from stress concentration area such as notch and material defect. It is difficult to predict the remaining fatigue lift of mechanical components because the surface micro-crack on critical area initiates and grows with statistical distribution. Plane bending fatigue tests were carried out on the plain specimen of Al 2024-T3 and the initiation and growth behavior of surface micro cracks were observed. The statistical distribution of surface length of multiple micro cracks and their maximum length were investigated. The maximum surface crack length distributions were analyzed on the basis of the statistics of extremes in order to examine the prediction of remaining life.

Cold expansion method is an effective process to retard the crack initiation at a hole and to improve fatigue life by developing the compressive residual stress around the hole. Several researches have been treated for the crack propagating toward a hole around which the residual stress by cold expansion exists. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the fatigue characteristics under the residual stress by cold expansion. Fatigue tests are performed for the plate with a central hole to which cold expansion has been applied, and the effects of the residual stress on the fatigue life are evaluated. Also the fatigue crack growth tests are conducted for the CT specimen in which the residual stress by cold expansion has been generated. The change of fatigue crack growth characteristics by the residual stress is investigated and the effects of cold expansion ratio are evaluated.

In welded steel structures, there are many stress concentration sites such as weld beads, and welding defects are likely to occur at the welded parts. When a repeated fatigue load acts on a stress concentration site, fatigue crack occurs and propagates, leading to fatigue fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to understand fatigue life, crack initiation life, and crack propagation life in order to prevent fatigue failure. In this study, a compliance method was derived for use in the study of fatigue crack propagation characteristics. This compliance can be used for automated measurement of fatigue cracks. The compliance was calculated using an in-house FEM program for a CT specimen. The results of this calculation are presented in relation to a/W and compared with calculation results using the J integral and a program from a previous study. In addition, the strain distribution in the upward and downward directions was calculated from the center of the back face of the CT specimen. In this distribution, the strain tended to decrease from the center to the top and bottom. The compliance method was achieved from these calculations and can be used for automatic execution of crack propagation tests.
The corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour of dual phase steel was investigated in 3% NaCl solution at 302MPa and 137MPa. Fatigue test was conducted by cantilever type of self-made rotary bending fatigue testing machine. The fatigue strength increased with increasing the hardness of 2nd phase. Corrosion pit originated at the boundary of the 2nd phase. The size and number of corrosion pits were influenced by the 2nd phase hardness, and pits remained constant in size just after they were transited into cracks. The life of crack initiation was effected by stress level. The shape of relation of .DELTA. K and da/dN has smaller scattering in it in 3% NaCl solution than that in air. The higher the 2nd phase hardness is, the greater the corrosion fatigue life becomes. Corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour was primarily effected by mechanical factor in case of high stress(302MPa), but by electro-chemical reaction in a lower stress(137MPa). As stress level got lower and hardness of the 2nd phase got higher, the roughness of fracture surface increased.
