  • The present study was intended to measure the level of fatigue symptoms among nurses working for a university hospital and to reveal its related factors. The self-administered questionnaires were given to 450 nurses during the period from October 1st to 31st, 2010. As a results, the level of fatigue symptoms were 75.1% in normal group, and the high-risk group 24.9%. The level of fatigue symptoms reflected in job stress contents were higher as job demand was higher, and the autonomy of job and the supervisor support was lower. In correlations, fatigue symptoms were found to be in a positive correlation with job demand, whereas in negative correlation with autonomy of job and supervisor support. The adjusted odds ratio of fatigue symptoms on job demand were significantly increased in the high risk group than in low group, but autonomy of job. were significantly decreased in the high risk group than in low group. In conclusion, the study results indicated that the level of fatigue symptoms is independently influenced by job stress contents.

  • In nuclear power plants, there is a risk of thermal fatigue in equipment and piping affecting system soundness because the temperature change of the system accompanies in every operation and shutdown. Therefore, in order to prevent the excess of the fatigue limit during the lifetime of plants, the fatigue limit of each piping material is determined in the designing stage. However, there are many cases where equipment or piping is locally subjected to thermal fatigue that is not considered in the design, resulting in damage to the equipment and piping, and failure during operation. Currently, local thermal fatigue generation mechanisms that are not taken into account in the design stage are gradually being identified. In this paper, the effects of the fluid temperature fluctuations on the piping soundness due to the mixing of hot and cold water, one of the local thermal fatigue generating mechanisms, were evaluated.

  • The purpose of this review is to confirm whether Soyo-san (Xiaoyao-san) and its modifications is effective on alleviating clinical symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients. We collected clinical trials (randomized controlled trial, quasi-randomized controlled trial, controlled clinical trial) to investigate the effects of Soyo-san and its modifications on general symptoms, fatigue, depression and anxiety in CFS patients. The databases used for data retrieval were Pubmed, Central Cochrane, Embase, CNKI, CQVIP, Wanfang, CiNii, OASIS, RISS, and Koreamed. We performed selection/exclusion process from the found studies to conform with prespecified criteria, and assessed the final included trials according to the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The included studies were classified based on the interventions in experimental and control group. Eight randomized controlled trials and one controlled clinical trial (total 921 participants) were eligible and their results were synthesized in the meta analysis. The synthesis showed a considerable effect of Soyo-san and its modifications on improvement of general symptoms (relative risk 0.27 [95% CI 0.19 to 0.39], Z=7.03, P<0.00001; I2=0%) and fatigue severity (SMD -1.20 [95% CI -1.46 to -0.93], Z=8.78, P<0.00001; I2=52%) in CFS patients, while Effect on depression and anxiety were inconclusive. We found that Soyo-san and its modifications were effective for improvement of general symptoms and fatigue severity in CFS post-treatment.

  • The psychosocial stress and musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) have been one of major health problems for hospital workers. This study tried to understand the relationship between symptoms associated with MSDs and risk factors such as working posture, job stress, psychosocial stress and fatigue. A total number of 655 hospital workers participated in this study. Specifically, REBA was applied for evaluating working posture and a checklist prepared by KOSHA(Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency) was used for symptom survey. A questionnaire from KOSHA was also used for collecting data associated with job stress, psychosocial stress and fatigue. All these data were formulated and modeled by path analysis which was one of major statistical tools in this study. Specifically, path analysis for the data we collected came up with several major findings. The risk scores from working posture based on REBA had indirect effects via fatigue factor(MFS) as well as direct effects on symptoms. The factors associated with job stress (KOSS) and psychosocial stress(PWI-SF) had significant effects on symptoms. Specifically, indirect effect of job stress factors via fatigue factors(MFS) had bigger than that of direct effect of job stress on symptom.

  • In general, an inspection schedule is established based on the long-term fatigue life during the design stage. However, in the design stage, it is difficult to clearly identify the uncertainty factors affecting long-term fatigue life. In this study, the probabilistic fatigue life assessment was conducted in accordance with the methodology of DNV-GL. Firstly, The initial crack distribution estimated through the initial crack propagation analysis was updated by reflecting the results of crack inspection. Secondly, the updated crack distribution was compared with the initial crack distribution, and the probability of failure was updated with the effect of crack inspection.

  • The purposes of this study were to determine wether knee muscular fatigue affects on one-leg static standing balance. Sixty four healthy subjects were used for this study : 44 men and 20 women, with an average age of 19.52. One leg static standing balance was measured at pre-fatigue and post-fatigue by an instrumented balance assessment system(kinesthetic ability training balance platform) which is commercially available for testing or training balance. Isokinetic exercises were used to evoke muscle fatigue at 180 degree/see by Cybex 1200. One leg static standing balance ability was significantly decreased after knee muscular fatigue. Although these phenomenons were not clearly understood, these results have important implications for rehabilitation in fatigable patients. These results suggest that the excessive fatiguing during rehabilitation in patients with fatigable disease may increase risk of reinjury and falling injury due to balance disturbance. Further studies are required to determine the physiological mechanisms of muscle fatigue that can play in decreasing one-leg static standing balance ability.

  • The construction industry is demanding, dynamic, and complex making it difficult for workers to recognize hazards. The nature of construction tasks exposes workers to several critical risk factors, such as a high rate of exertion and fatigue. Recent studies suggest that fatigue may impact hazard recognition in the construction industry. However, most studies rely on subjective measures when assessing the relationship between physical fatigue and hazard recognition, limiting such studies' efficacy. Thus, this study examined the relationship between physical fatigue and hazard recognition using a controlled experiment. Worker fatigue levels were captured using physiological data and a subjective exertion scale. The findings confirmed that physical exertion plays a significant role in hazard recognition skills (p < 0.05). This research contributes to theory and practice by providing a process for objectively assessing the influence of physical fatigue on worker safety and providing construction professionals with some critical insight needed to improve workplace safety.

  • This paper proposes a fatigue recognition method using the C4.5 algorithm. Based on domestic and international studies on fatigue evaluation, we have completed the fatigue self - assessment scale in combination with lifestyle and cultural characteristics of Chinese people. The scales used in the text were applied to 58 sub items and were used to assess the type and extent of fatigue. These items fall into four categories that measure physical fatigue, mental fatigue, personal habits, and fatigue outcomes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the leading causes of fatigue formation and to recognize the degree of fatigue, thereby increasing the personal interest in fatigue and reducing the risk of cerebrovascular disease due to excessive fatigue. The recognition rate of the fatigue recognition system using the C4.5 algorithm was 85% on average, confirming the usefulness of this proposal.

  • This paper extends our recent work on the fatigue behavior of stud shear connectors in steel and recycled tyre rubber-filled concrete (RRFC) composite beams. A series of 16 fatigue push-out tests were conducted using a hydraulic servo testing machine. Three different recycled tyre rubber contents of concrete, 0%, 5% and 10%, were adopted as main variable parameters. Stress amplitudes and the diameters of studs were also taken into consideration in the tests. The results show that the fatigue lives of studs in 5% and 10% RRFC were 1.6 and 2.0 times greater of those in normal concrete, respectively. At the same time, the ultimate residual slips' values of stud increased in RRFC to highlight its better ductility. The average ultimate residual slip value of the studs was found to be equal to a quarter of studs' diameter. It had also been proved that stress amplitude was inversely proportional to the fatigue life of studs. Moreover, the fatigue lives of studs with large diameter were slightly shorter than those of smaller ones and using larger ones had the risk of tearing off the base metal. Finally, the comparison between test results and three national codes was discussed.

  • This study aimed to identify the change patterns of fatigue and quality of life during consecutive chemotherapies and to determine the relationship of these two variables. Method: Stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy were recruited from a university hospital in Seoul. Each chemotherapy, subjects were asked to respond to the questionnaires regarding their fatigue and quality of life. The number of subjects who completed 4 cycles and over was 11. Fatigue was measured with Lee's tool(1999). Quality of life was measured with a tool revised by the author based on Padilla et al(1983). Result: Most patients were in 1st stage(5 patients) or 3rd stage(5 patients). Fatigue was revealed at its highest level in the 3rd or 4th chemotherapy and at its lowest level in the 1st or 6th chemotherapy. A quality of life appeared at its highest level in the 5th or 6th chemotherapy and the lowest level in 3rd or 4th chemotherapy. Conclusion: Among 6 cycles of chemotherapy, in 3-4th chemotherapy the fatigue was the highest and the quality of life were the lowest. Many patients decided to stop treatment at the same period. Therefore we can recognize cancer patients receiving chemo- therapy are in the highest risk at the time of the 3-4 th chemotherapy.
