  • The agricultural environment is changing and becoming more advanced due to the influence of the 4th Industrial Revolution. From the basic plan of Rural Informatics to the current level of 2nd generation smart farms aimed at improving productivity using Big data, cloud network and more IoT technology. We are continuing to provide support and research and development. However, many problems remain to be solved in order to supply and settle smart farms in Korea. The purpose of this study is to provide a method of collecting and sharing data on farming environment and to help improve the income and productivity of farmers based on collected data. In the case of hog farm, the multiple sensors for environmental data like temperature, humidity and gases and the network environment for connecting the internet were established. The environment sensor was made using the ESP8266 Node MCU board as micro-controller, DHT22 sensor for temperature and humidity, and MQ series sensors for various gases in the hog pens. The network sensor was applied experimentally for one month and the environmental data of the hog farm was stored on a web database. This study is expected to raise the importance of collecting and managing the agricultural and environmental data, for the next generation farmers to understand the smart farm more easily and to try it by themselves.

  • As the conventional farming emphasizes the productivity and the quantity produced, large amount of agricultural chemicals have been used. As a result, natural environment and human health are critical issues in recent years in Korea. Reflecting these problems, many farmers have begun to practice the LISA(low input sustainable agriculture) voluntarily across the country. In this study, a survey was made to 13 apple producers who have been producing the fruits by practicing the LISA, and wanted to analyze the production and marketing information in order to suggest the improvement strategies for the sustainable agriculture. Some of the improvement strategies were suggested as follows ; First, advance payment to the LISA apple growers should be supplied in order to make it easier for the financially burdened producers. Also, some kind of means should be developed to prepare the equipments/machineries to make the organic fertilizers. Price differentiation should be utilized in marketing the products, and mass marketing channels for the LISA products should be provided for them. Public quality guaranty is badly needed in order to accelerate the marketing. Finally, stronger producer organizations should be organized and subsidized by the government because those organizations are playing an important role in developing the LISA.

  • Recently, industrialization and automation for crops has enabled the development of smart farm technology over the world This is due to the need for the automation and convenience of the agricultural system to aging the population and reducing the labor force. In this system, the smart app can control the temperature and humidity that can be conveniently managed by the farmers. It is possible to check the status of the greenhouses in real time in the smartphone and maintain the optimum temperature and humidity, thereby helping to prevent pests and diseases, to grow crops, and to improve the labor force and productivity of farmers and fishermen.

  • The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a new concept of increasing the yield of rice produced in farming. Therefore, we investigated the impacts of planting density on nutrient uptake as affected by SRI under no-till cropping system. The field was prepared as a randomized complete block design with three treatments: $10{\times}10$ cm, $20{\times}20$ cm and $30{\times}30$ cm planting densities. The root dry mass was significantly increased in the wider planting densities (p<0.05%). The highest grain yield was obtained in $20{\times}20$ cm planting density plot (p<0.05%) due to higher plant density per unit area and spikelets number per panicle. The total uptake amounts by rice plant were significantly higher in $20{\times}$20 cm planting density plot as 94.8 kg $ha^{-1}$ for T-N and 29.9 kg $ha^{-1}$ for P than other planting densities plots, but K and Mg uptake were significantly higher in $10{\times}10$ cm planting density plot (p<0.05%). In this study, our findings suggest that SRI should be considered as a new practice for the rice productivity.

  • This study examined the changes of water quality in relation to distribution of hydrophytes, and the purification capacity of Zizania latifolia to improve the effluent from Munpyeong stream from March 1997 to December 1999. While the concentration of nitrogen and phosphorous in water were increased during the farming season, those decreased, during the streaming down to paddy and drainage areas. In investigated sites, the Z. latifolia was dominant community according to the development of the natural wetlands. Furthermore, it formed a large community owing to its high adaptability to environmental changes in the agriculture lands. In September, the leaves productivity of the Z. latifolia were 4,032g D.W/$m^2$and roots were 7,680gD.W/$m^2$. The purification capacity of the Z. latifolia for NH$_3$-N, $No_3$-N, and PO$_4$-P were 13.41, 17.07, and 4.58 respectively during 5 days. The results suggested that it needs to establish wetlands vegetated by hydrophytes to improve the water quality of the effluent from agricultural lands.

  • The aging of farm households has caused serious problems such as productivity slowdown and aggravated income polarization in South Korea. Urban-to-rural migration has been recently suggested as a measure to attenuate the aging of rural population and other related problems. The inflow of migrants for farming can have a substantial effect on agriculture and rural communities while the natural adjustment of rural population caused by birth and death is slow. This paper forecasts population distribution of different provinces using the Origin-Destination (OD) analysis, taking into account both the size and directions of migration. In the analysis, nodes where the migration takes place are divided by the industrial sectors (agriculture and non-agriculture), regions, and ages. The results of a ten-year forecast shows that the aging of total population in most provinces will be intensified, but the portion of people over sixty will decrease in the agricultural sector. This finding implies that migration into rural areas, when occurring by a large extent, can mitigate the aging process and attendant problems.

  • Spatial and timely information on crop and filed conditions is one of the most important basics for rational and efficient planning and management in agriculture. Remote sensing, GIS, and modeling are powerful tools for such applications. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art in remote sensing of crop and field conditions with some case studies. It is also shown that a synergistic linkage between process-based models and remote sensing signatures enables us to estimate the multiple crop/ecosystem variables at a dynamic mode. Remotely sensed information can greatly reduce the uncertainty of simulation models by compensating for insufficient availability of data or parameters. This synergistic approach allows the effective use of infrequent and multi-source remote sensing data for estimating important ecosystem variables such as biomass growth and ecosystem $CO_2$ flux. This paper also shows a geo-spatial information system that enables us to integrate, search, extract, process, transform, and calculate any part of the data based on ID#, attributes, and/or by river-basin boundary, administrative boundary, or boundaries of arbitrary shape/size all over Japan. A case study using the system demonstrates that the nitrogen load from fertilizer was closely related to nitrate concentration of groundwater. The combined use of remote sensing, GIS and modeling would have great potential for various agro-ecosystem applications.

  • On the basis of high osmotic tolerance and xylitol production, a novel yeast strain was screened from soils of rice farming. The isolated strain HY200 was systematically characterized by using general approaches of Biolog Microlog$^{TM}$ and 18S rRNA sequence analyses, and consequently was designated as Candida tropicalis HY200. Under formulated culture conditions, relatively high xylitol yield ($77\%$) and productivity (2.57 g/l$\codt$h) were obtained, in practice, when 200 g/l of xylose was supplemented. In the utilization of nitrogen, inorganic compounds could not serve as nitrogen sources. As a promising phenotype, HY200 steadily flocculated during and/or after growing in the formulated medium. The extent of flocculation was partly affected by nitrogen sources. However, regardless of the kinds of carbon source fed, the flocculent cells were always observed at the end of the exponential growth phase. These observations strongly suggest that the strain HY200 could effectively be used as a potential candidate for the production of xylitol from xylose, especially in repeated batch mode, because of its flocculation ability and tolerance to high substrate concentrations.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the farms growing domestic kiwi fruit 'Gold' on their management performance and efficiency in order to reduce the risks involved with introducing new kind of crops for growing, and suggest improvements. First, the result of analysis showed that domestic kiwi fruit 'Gold' growers' income were higher than the average growers due to the fruit's high unit price and productivity. Second, the analysis of management efficiency resulted in scale efficiency having greater impact on inefficiency rather than pure technical efficiency. As for the analysis of technical efficiency, the depreciation costs of agricultural facilities had the greatest influence on its inefficiency. Third, inefficient farms put in excessive inputs across the board, while labor costs(self labor cost + hired labor cost) were the largest factor of optimal inputs according to the models of technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency. Fourth, because of greater reliance on mechanical tools from rising labor costs, there's a need for individual farms to avoid buying farming equipments and instead share the equipments of nearby farms and agricultural cooperatives, or start renting agricultural machines from companies.
