  • This study aimed to quantify the impact of crossbreeding at farm level, in mixed farm systems in Gujarat. Households with crossbred cattle did not differ from households without crossbreds in terms of farm resources, crop gross margins and off-farm income. The use of crossbred animals did increase livestock gross margins by 64% and household income by 22%. The three agro-ecological zones included in this study differed considerably according to farm system and household income. However, in all three zones, households with crossbreds had higher livestock gross margins than households without crossbreds. There was no real difference in work load and labour division between households with and without crossbreds. There was also no difference in the use of bullocks for draught purposes between the two types of households. In particular buffaloes are being replaced by crossbred cattle. There was a large variation in farm income, largely because of land area. The milk offake per average cow and the number of buffaloes also related positively to farm income in both types of households. Crossbreeding has proved technically and financially viable in different Gujarat mixed farming systems. It can be concluded that crossbreeding is an important development option for landless farmers.

  • Biological ammonia removal system have been used conventionally for the seawater fish farming. But this process requires long hydraulic retention times and large area. Also it has a trouble of NO3-N accumulation in the system. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the feasibility of effective nitrogen removal efficiency in the sea water fish farming system by electolysis. As the result, electrolysis system showed a good ammonia and nitrate nitrogen removal and E. coli sterilization efficiencies. Because of the high salinities in the seawater for electron transfer, electrolysis is an effictive water treatment process for seawater fish farming. The relation among ammonia removal efficiency, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and electric wattage (watt) with 10 mm electrod distance isas follow ; log [$NH_4^$+-N(%)]=0.431log(HRT(sec)$\times$Watt)+0.88(r=0.950) And the relation between ammonia removal efficiency and residual chlorine concentration in the seawater is as follow; $$NH_4^+-N(%)=48\cdotlog[Residual\;chlorine(mg/\ell)+28(r=0.892)$$

  • Purpose: This study focuses on exploring ways to improve the distribution method of shrimp farming so that it is eco-friendly and increases the distribution of shrimp. Research design, data and methodology: The experimental device installed in a biofloc shrimp culture in one area tested 10 times. Complex odor, concentration of H2S, water quality improvement effected by decomposition of organic substances, and degree of microbial activation measured. The data of the experimental results verified using the T-test technique, and the p value was determined based on the significance probability of 0.05. Results: This experimental device was effective in reducing odor and hydrogen sulfide in shrimp farms. With the improvement of water quality, dissolved oxygen increased due to the microbubble and cavitation action of air ejector and ultrasonic waves. In addition, the cultured microorganisms in the cultured water treated by the experimental device were remarkably proliferated compared to the raw water. Conclusions: The biofloc distribution method has a significant effect on improving water quality and reducing odor substances and will become a new eco-friendly and efficient distribution method for shrimp farming in the future.

  • The aim of this paper is to explore the role played by the endogenous farming organization sustaining rural community's competitiveness. Nulmi-Ri, Chungdo Kun in Kyongsangbuk-do chosen as a case study area is known to be one of the most competitive rural communities, making a living with a peach farming. This community maintains its competi- tiveness by operating a community-based filming organization which was organised in an endogenous way. Most of individual farmers in this community belong to the farming organization and they have cooperative relationships in the processes of production and distribution. In this respect, the exchange and circulation of knowledge, and collective learning, tend to be significantly taken place between the organization members. Based on the experience of the Nulmi-Ri's endogenous farming organization, we propose some constructive comments for rural community development.

  • Traditionally, like many people in mountain region of the Himalaya, the Lwang communities depend on mix of subsistence agriculture, animal husbandry, and seasonal migrant labor for their livelihoods. These traditional systems are characterized by low productivity, diverse use of available natural resources (largely for home consumption), limited markets, and some aversion for innovation. The potential to generate wealth through commerce has largely been untapped by these mountain residents and thus is undervalued in local and national economies. Introduction of organic tea farming is a part of Lwang community's several initiatives to break the vicious poverty cycle Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) played facilitating roles in all their efforts since beginning. In five years, the tea plantation emerged as a new means for secured a livelihood. This study aims to analyze the current practices in tea farming both in terms of farm management and soil nutrient status(technical) and the prosperity of the tea farmers (social). The technical aspect covers the soil and tea leaf analysis of various nutrients contents in the soil and tea leaf. Originally, the technical aspect of the study was not planned but later during the consultation with the advisor it was taken into consideration which added value to the research study. The sample were collected from different locations and analyzed on the field itself. The other part of the study i.e. the social aspect was done through questionnaire survey and focus group discussion. the tea farming provided them not only a new opportunity but also earned an identity in the region. This initiative was undertaken as a piloting measure. Now that the tea is in production with processing unit established locally, more serious consideration has to be given for better yield and economic prosperity. This research finding will help the community to analyze their efforts and make correction measures in tea garden management and application of fertilizer. It is also expected to fill up the gaps of knowledge and information required to reduce economic stresses and enhance capacity of farmers to make the tea farming a sustainable and beneficial business. The findings are expected to Sustainability of organic tea farming has direct impacts on biodiversity conservation compared to the other traditional farming practices that are more resource intensive. The study will also contribute to identify key action points required for reducing poverty while conserving environment and enhancing livelihoods

  • The proportion of the elderly in rural area(21.7%) is four times more than that of the urban area (5.4%) in Korea. With this rapid aging of the population in rural Korea there has been growing concern about the quality of life of rural elderly. Compare to urban elderly, rural elderly experience many disadvantages, especially in terms of limited offering of social/educational programs. Their social/educational needs are rarely assessed and there are few programs geared to the needs of rural elderly. In this regard, this study aims (1) to identify education and activity program needs of the rural elderly related to three dimensions: Family life, Farming life, and Community activities and (2) to develop education and activity programs for the rural elderly based on the needs assessment. For this purpose, data are gathered from 413 rural elderly and 110 community welfare specialists, using a structured questionaire. The statistical methods used for data analysis are descriptive statistics, cross tables with SPSS wins 10.0 program. The major findings of this study are as follows: Majority(94.1%) of the rural elderly wants to participate in diverse social/educational programs. They want to have programs dealing with 'relationship enhancement with children', 'nutrition', 'health and care', 'farming skill', 'gardening', 'volunteering', etc. Based on these results, we develop eight types of education program and four types of activity program, according to the priority of their needs in each dimension. There are four sessions of Family life program, and four sessions of Community activities program. The effect of these programs will be evaluated by taking pretest and protest in local basis.

  • Since rural people migrated to urban area as a result of rapid industrialization in Korea, a significant proportion on agricultural labor farces has consistently reduced and therefore incurred labor shortage in rural area which might aggravate the farm household's economy. This sutdy suggests a long run plan of supplying agricultural machines for forage cultivation based on the survery of 102 livestock farm housecholds conducted in 1987, aimed at curtailing the labor costs which would contribute to improving the livestock farming management. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Among the 102 livestock farm household surveyed, 50 farm housecholds were found to cultivate 398a of grassland on average while other 52 farm households produced the forage on the 169a of land under cultivation averagely. 2. Over 50 percent of farm houseolds were reported to have their own agricultural machine for harvesting and cutting, however rates of mechanization in other operations such as mowing and sowing were less than 20 percent. 3. There were more than 50 percent of livestock farm households who have shown their intention to buy and operate their own farming machines when proprer opportunities are given. 4. In order to estimate the long-run demand for agricultural machines for livestock farm household considering current mechanization procedure, data for the machine's optimal capacty, growth of arable acreage for feed stuffs was collected and analyzed. 5. Based on the estimated demand, long range supply plan of livestock farming machines for the period of 1990-2010 was suggested. 6. Finally, measures for technological developement and finanacial support were suggested to implement so as to encourage the farmers' adoption of agricultural machines, and to achieve the goal of mechanization planning for the livestock farm household.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify any differences in academic records of students after they got into the Korea National College of Agriculture and Fisheries through the entrance exam. The target group was the students of 1,035 who enrolled from the year of 2012 to 2014 by the exams respectively, and this study compared those first year's records. As a result, this study found that their academic achievements have no significant differences statistically. With regard to the result, we could recognize that the average achievements of students are arithmetically high, who were accepted by admission officer's interview(talented students of agriculture and fisheries) and regular admission procedure to which the scholastic test result is applied. Accordingly, it is more desirable that we should rather focus on measures to improve the admission procedure that could contribute to academic achievements of students who are mostly accepted through the nonscheduled admission. It is pointless to focus on discussion that the achievement of students selected by a particular procedure is low. That kind of criticism proved groundless. Secondly, the study of the correlation between their admission records and after admission records of the freshmen in 2012 shows that a significant difference does not exist whereas those of in 2013 and 2014 has a slightly different statistically, though a coefficient of correlation was a mere 0.17. It account for this result that KNCAF has increased the applied-rate of highschool transcript from 33.3% to 50.0.% in admission procedure from the year of 2013. However, lowering the applied-rate of farming and fishing background is not everything as we consider the graduates' easy settling into rural area. It is a well-known fact that after graduation, the majority of students who have applied for a grace period of the delay in performing the obligation of farming and fishing, and of students who have paid the school expenses back came from ones with no sufficient foothold. This means that we should formulate a supporting policy for the students to settle into rural area smoothly after graduation if we keep the regulation of lowing the applied-rate of farming and fishing.

  • To assess the soil quality of Chonan City, soil analyses were conducted according to the 14 different sampling sites. The soil pH of the agricultural area near the expressway was lower than that of the other farming area, which indicated that this acidification was probably attributed to the acid rain caused by the traffic exhaust gas such as SOx and NOx. Acidification was more severe in the dry farming area than in the rice paddy area. All concentration of 6 different heavy metals (As, Cu, Cd, $Cr^{6+}$, Hg, Pb) and organic contaminants (cyanide, organic-p, PCBs, phenols) were found to be lower than the standard of soil pollution. The concentration of BTEX also lower than the standard of soil pollution. An assessment using the SPI (Soil Pollution Index). which was developed to estimate an overall soil quality, was performed. Each SPC (Soil Pollution Score) were evaluated with the results of the data from this study. The soil quality of most area of Chonan City was determined to Class 1 , which indicated that the soil was healthy.
