Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of bereavement for main family members who had made and followed DNR decision for their family members. Method: This qualitative study was based on a grounded theory, and used in-depth interview techniques with the bereaved 10 main family members who had been treated and died under DNR order. Results: The causal condition of the family member was 'Releasing', and the main consequent phenomenon were 'Blaming self and ruminating'. The contextual condition was 'The memory of the deceased'. The action/reaction strategy was 'Purifying'. The intervening condition was 'Supporting system', and the consequence was 'Acceptance'. The experience after bereavement of the family member on DNR decision were rational processes that purified themselves and healed the guilt feeling about the decision from reflective assessment and response about DNR decision. Based on this results, the substantive theory 'Reflective self healing' was derived. Conclusion: The main family members in following DNR decision are more likely to have unhealthy emotional condition than others in normal bereavement process. But they overcame the grief of bereavement through reflective self healing process.
Chibby family member 2 (CBY2), also known as SPERT or NURIT, is a gene with Chibby-like super family domain, whose function is not well known. In this study, the quail CBY2 gene was cloned, its sequences were analyzed, and its role in the myogenesis of QM7 quail muscle cells was characterized. Quail CBY2 has 978 nucleotides, which are translated into 325 amino acids, and the amino acid sequences are highly similar to those of chicken CBY2. Avian CBY2 diverted from mammalian CBY2 during early evolutionary history. According to the protein domain prediction analysis, quail CBY2 has a Chibby-like superfamily domain consisting of 83 amino acids at the N-terminal of the protein, although compared to mammalian CBY2, many of the amino acids were different. CBY2 was highly expressed in the adipose tissue and moderately expressed in the liver, heart, and kidney, whereas rarely expressed in the muscle tissue in quail. To characterize the role of CBY2 in myogenesis, CBY2 was overexpressed in QM7 cells. The overexpression of CBY2 inhibited myotube formation as shown that the myotube area was approximately only 25% that of the control. Taken together, quail CBY2 has a Chibby-like superfamily domain and inhibits myogenesis. Further studies should focus on the identification of the inhibitory mechanism of CBY2 on myogenesis.
Purpose: This study done to identify the experiences of families caring for patients with terminal cancer. The question was, "What is the caregiving experience of a family who has a member with terminal cancer?" Methods: Grounded Theory was applied and in-depth interviews were done with 11 family members. Interviews were recorded with the interviewees' consent and were transcribed and analyzed. Participants' relationships to patients were 6 spouses, 4 daughters, and 1 mother. The ages of the participants were between 32 and 62, with an average of 47.5. Results: The study showed "enduring with bonds" as the main category and the main factor affecting this category was the "patients' diagnosis of terminal cancer." The caregiving experience was divided into four stages: shock, confusion, struggle, and acceptance. Mediating factors were relationship with the patient, intimacy with the patient, social support, communication, and trust. Conclusively, participants underwent internal maturity, and changes occurred in family and social and personal life. Conclusion: The families took care of the patients with responsibility and love. The study results should help with the understanding of a family with a member with terminal cancer and should be used to develop nursing, mediating, and consulting programs for these caregivers.

A cDNA encoding the defensin homologue of a novel family member was isolated from the cDNA library of the firefly,Pyrocoelia rufa. Sequence analysis of the cDNA encoding the defensin homologue of P. rufa resulted that the 165 bp cDHA has an open reading frame of 55 amino acid residues. The deduced amino acid sequences of the defensin homologue gene from P. rufa showed identity to known mammalian defensins. Also 6 cystein residues in the P. rufa defensin homologue gene were conserved in the same position as those of known mammalian defensins. The result suggested that P. rufa defensin homologue is a novel member of the insect defensin family. Southern blot analysis suggests that there may be a single copy number of the P.rufa defensin homologue gene and their fat body-specific expression pattern at the transcriptional level was confirmed by Northern blot analysis.
Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to understand the experiences of reorganization of everyday lives among the women with chronic health problem. Methods: In this study, the approach and its process of sociology of everyday lives were adopted. Data for the study came from 6 informants and 9 family members of the informants by interview and participant-observation from January, 2004 to May, 2006. Qualitative content analyzing methods were adopted. Results: Informants' everyday lives were reorganized as follows. During the experiences of shock from unpleasant and unclear symptoms of their body, their sight fixed on the body part. Their time also fixed on a point of present. They started to wander from medical care to folk and lay care. After they were informed that the health problem could not be treated completely, they reduced the world of everyday life and protected themselves from the chaotic unfamiliar world by setting -a- side duties as a family member and severing unessential social relationship. As they achieved a skill for managing their health problem, they gained their former pattern of everyday lives as a woman, a family member, and a social member. Finally, they created a new life world. Conclusion: We need more study on the development of an adaptive strategy by the informants, to intervene in the crisis of everyday life.
The paper's suggestion is Web based Tele-Medicine System will be open to public, low-budget featuring high quality of extensive medical services. It will keep a log of personal medical history to allow doctors to share information on patients and their families. This will result in the reduction of erroneous diagnosis and ensure successful e-business. On top of this, the new system will provide a solution for membership (client) management. It will combine online and offline medical services and be available 24 hours a day to anywhere users have Internet access, setting itself apart from the existing distance medical services system. Specially, The paper's suggestion is sharing medical treatment information between family members is suggested. This approach makes possible understanding physical constitution and environment between family members, and can result in bringing a faster treatment effect if some family member suffers from a similar disease.
The purposes of this research were to investigate the general trends and differences of family members' satisfaction and attitudes related to mother's employment condition, to examine the correlations between every members' employment condition, to examine the correlations between every members' interactions, and to analyze the effects of related variables. To study these objectives, three kinds of questionnaire were used and the data were obtained through 780 parents and adolescents. The jmajor findings were as follows: 1) The general trends of family member's interactions showed that the score of relationship satisfaction between mother and adolescent was higher than father and adolescent. Nonemployed mothers and their children were more traditional in attitudes. 2) The correlations of family member's interactions were significant in satisfaction. Husband's occupational attitudes were related with wife's interactions were significant in satisfaction. Husband's occupational attitudes were related with wife's satisfaction, and parentadolescent attitudes were related each other in dual earner family. 3) Mother's marital satisfaction was affected by employment condition, communication satisfaction, husband's aid, support, satisfaction for employment condition, and father's was affected by communication satisfaction and wife's marital satisfaction. Adolescent's satisfaction with father was influenced by satisfaction with mother and mother's employment condition, and sex-role attitudes were influenced by employment condition and father's support.
Purpose. The main purpose of this critical ethnography was to examines the process and discourses through which family caregivers experience while caring for their sick family member in a hospital. Methods. This was achieved by conducting in-depth interviews with 12 family caregivers, and by observing their caring activities and daily lives in natural settings. The study field was a unit for neurologic patients. Data was analyzed using taxonomy, discourse analysis, and proxemics. All research work was iteratively processed from March 2003 to December 2004. Results. Constant comparative analysis of the data yielded the process of becoming a successful family caregiver: encountering the differences and chaos as novice; constructing their world of skilled caregivers; and becoming a hospital family as experienced caregivers. During the process of becoming an experienced hospital family, the discourse of family centered idea guided their caring behaviors and daily lives. Conclusion. The paternalistic family caregivers struggled, cooperated, and harmonized with the patriarchal world of professional health care system. During this process of becoming hospital family, professional nurses must act as cultural brokers between the lay family caring system and the professional caring system.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to provide deep understanding of the reported experiences of families with their loved one in the intensive care unit (ICU), focusing on interactions with healthcare providers. Methods: The data were collected by individual interviews of eleven participants. The transcribed data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify major themes and sub-themes that represented the experiences of families. Results: Five themes and 13 sub-themes emerged. "Captive of patients' delayed death: Fear and anxiety" describes psychological problems arising when the family member became critically ill enough to warrant being admitted to the ICU. "Families as the weak: Suppression and resistance" describes interpersonal difficulties arising due to lack of information and trust with healthcare providers. "Deprivation of authority and duty as families: Helplessness" illustrate situational barriers in attempting to protect and support family member. "Re-establishment of trust relationship with healthcare providers: Gratitude and appreciation" describes how they satisfied with themselves by regaining trust relationship. Lastly, "Acceptance of reality through direct care participation: Relief and peace" illustrates peace of mind by gaining sense of reality through active direct care participation. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the positive and negative experiences of families with ICU patients. The results will be useful in developing family-centered nursing interventions.
This study is to demonstrate the effects of working hour on the workers' subjective well-being. Working hour, in this study, means working time per a day and the generosity of weekly holiday. Firstly, the effects of working hour on the worker's well-being will be analyzed. Secondly, it will be investigated if the effects of working hour on the worker's well-being change according to the existence of the family member who needs care. The results of the analysis show that longer working hour and the lower generosity of weekly holiday decrease workers' well being. If workers have family member who needs care, the effects of working hour and the generosity of weekly holiday on the worker's well-being are not significant. It contrasts to the result that women are more satisfactory to their lives than men in cases they don't have family member who needs care. It is supposed that these results are closely related with the enormous gender gap of care time in Korea.
