Diversity of Halophilic Archaea From Six Hypersaline Environments in Turkey

  • The diversity of archaeal strains from six hypersaline environments in Turkey was analyzed by comparing their phenotypic characteristics and 16S rDNA sequences. Thirty-three isolates were characterized in terms of their phenotypic properties including morphological and biochemical characteristics, susceptibility to different antibiotics, and total lipid and plasmid contents, and finally compared by 16S rDNA gene sequences. The results showed that all isolates belong to the family Halobacteriaceae. Phylogenetic analyses using approximately 1,388 bp comparisions of 16S rDNA sequences demonstrated that all isolates clustered closely to species belonging to 9 genera, namely Halorubrum (8 isolates), Natrinema (5 isolates), Haloarcula (4 isolates), Natronococcus (4 isolates), Natrialba (4 isolates), Haloferax (3 isolates), Haloterrigena (3 isolates), Halalkalicoccus (1 isolate), and Halomicrobium (1 isolate). The results revealed a high diversity among the isolated halophilic strains and indicated that some of these strains constitute new taxa of extremely halophilic archaea.

강원 중부지역 산림 내 나비류 분포에 관한 연구(II) (Distribution of Lepidoptera on Forest Stand in Central Gangwon Area(II))

  • 본 연구는 백두대간에 서식하는 나비목 곤충의 분포를 파악하기 위하여 2005년 7월과 8월에 수행되었다. 총 15과 123속 462개체가 채집되었으며, 점봉산(인제군 인제읍 귀둔리) 15과 63속 166개체, 응복산(홍천군 내면 명계리) 15과 65 속 159개체, 오대산(평창군 도암면 병내리) 9과 40속 137개체가 채집되었다. 조사지역에서 채집된 종들 중 우점하고 있는 5종은 머루박각시 (Ampelophaga rubiginosa) 54개체, 참나무산누에나방 (Antheraea yamamai) 35개체, 솔송나방 (Dendrolimus superans) 27개체, 북방뒷노랑밤나방 (Triphaenopsis jezoensis) 14개체, 얼룩매미나방 (Lymantria monacha) 13개체였다. Shannon(H') 지수와 균등도지수 (J') 는 점봉산 1.52, 0.84, 응복산1.69, 0.91, 오대산 1.37, 0.83, 유사도지수 (QS)는 점봉산과 응복산이 0.28로 다소 높았으며, 점봉산과 오대산이 0.11로 낮게 나타났다.

북한가정, 다문화가정과 한국가정 청소년의 건강행태 (Health behavior of North Korean, multicultural and Korean family adolescents in Korea: the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, 2011-2013)

  • Background: This study investigated the health behaviors of North Korean, multicultural, and Korean family adolescents in Korea. Methods: The study subjects were from the Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey (2011-2013) dataset. We identified 1,954 multicultural family adolescents and twice as many Korean family adolescents. Frequency analysis was used to assess nativity and nationality of the parents, and the chi-square test was used to compare the general characteristics and health behavior of the multicultural and Korean families. Conditional multiple logistic regression was used to compare health behavior between multicultural and Korean families. Results: Of the 5,862 multicultural and Korean family adolescents, current smoking in North Korean family adolescents was higher than Korean family adolescents (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.32; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.60-3.35) after adjusting for sex, school year, perceived school record, family structure, father's education, mother's education, perceived economic status, place of residence, and survey year. A high drinking rate was significantly greater in North Korean family adolescents compared to Korean family adolescents (aOR, 2.94; 95% CI, 1.89-4.57). Odds ratios for sufficient physical activity of vigorous intensity (aOR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.31-2.54) were significantly higher in North Korean family adolescents than in Korean family adolescents. Fast food intake (aOR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.34-2.86) was significantly higher in North Korean family adolescents compared to Korean family adolescents. Conclusion: There were differences in health behavior between North Korean, multicultural, and Korean family adolescents. Further studies are needed to investigate the factors associated with these differences.

성인남녀의 비혼유형에 영향을 미치는 요인: 사회인구학적 특징 및 가족가치관 요인을 중심으로 (Study on Non-Marriage Types and Related Factors among Young Unmarried Adults: Focus on Socio-Demographic Characteristics and Family Value)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine what factors influence various non-marriage types by considering reasons why adults are not married. The roles of individual characters and family values affecting each type of non-marriage were carefully considered. From the data of 'the Survey on the National Fertility, Family Health and Welfare in Korea in 2015', 1,053 unmarried adults who were in their late 20s to middle 40s were selected. Results show that non-marriage types among unmarried adults were diverse. Depending on sex, the distribution of non-marriage types differed. While economic reasons were predominant among men, lack of opportunities for marriage was the main reason for most women who were not married. Findings also suggest that factors such as socio-demographic characters and family values were differentially associated with each non-marriage type. These findings indicate a great deal of diversity in needs, lifestyle, and life satisfaction among unmarried young adults. This suggests that an increase in the population of unmarried adults can be related to prospectively various marriage behaviors and family patterns in our society in the future, and consequently life patterns will be different among the adult generation.

건강가정지원센터의 1인 가구 대상 프로그램 모형 개발 (Development of program models for single households in Healthy Families Support Centers)

  • This study aimed to develop program models for single households in the Healthy Families Support Centers. Data from seven female and seven male single households were collected through in-depth interviews. The major results were as follows. First, a demand for a program that both provides feeling safe and is self-caring came to the fore. Additionally, many respondents wanted to participate in programs with families. Second, the aspects of professional quality, diversity, and systematic management were mentioned as the strengths of programs in the Healthy Families Support Centers. Third, three program models were drawn up, as follows: The first model was a five-part program model like the current program settings of the Healthy Families Center. Those were sharing-caring, education, counselling, family-friendly culture, and community networking. The second model was a program for family relationships. The third was for joining programs with others. For the detailed program, a manual needs to be proposed, and the staff members who handle the programs for single households in the center will need to be retrained.

Three Miraciid Copepods (Harpacticoida, Miraciidae) from South Korea

  • Three harpacticoid species of the family Miraciidae are reported from neritic and brackish waters in Korea: Amphiascus kawamurai Ueda and Nagai, 2005, Schizopera clandestina (Klie, 1924) and Schizopera neglecta Akatova, 1935. Amphiascus kawamurai is newly recorded from Korea. Redescription is provided with the systematic accounts and illustrations of them.

Genetic Variation in Korean Populations of Wild Radish, Raphanus sativus var.hortensis f. raphanistroides (Brassicaceae)

  • Raphanus sativus L. var. hortensis f. raphanistroides (wild radish: Brassicaceae), a herbaceous perennial, occurs only on beaches in East Asia. Genetic diversity and population structure of seven Korean populations were investigated using starch gel electrophoresis. Although the Korean populatins are small, isolated with patchy distribution, the population maintain a moderate level of genetic diversity; the mean percentage fo polymorphic loci was 51.4%, mean number of alleles per locus was 1.84, and mean expected heterozygosity was 0.116. A combination of animal-outcrossing breeding system, wide geographical distribution, restricted ecological distribution, and a propensity for high fecundity may in part be explanatory factors contributing the moderate level of genetic diversity within populations. An overall excess of homozygotes relative to Hardy-Weinberg expetations (mean FISa=0.116) indicates that consanguineous mating occur within wild radish populations, leading to a family structure within a circumscribed area. Although population of wild radish experience a limited gene flow, only 5% of the total genetic variation found in Korean wild radish populations examined is due to differences among populations (mean GST=0.052). This value is considerably lower than the mean values of species with similar life history and ecological characteristics. However, significant differences were found in allele frequencies between populations for all polymorphic loci (P<0.01). It is supposed that directional selection toward genetic uniformity (similar gene frequencies) in a relatively homogenous habitat is thought to be operated among Korean wild radish populations.

Identification of the bacterial composition in the rockworm gut and biofloc-fed adult gut flora beneficial for integrated multitrophic aquaculture

  • The rockworm gut flora was identified at each growth stage to elucidate the composition of the bacterial community. The source material was Marphysa sanguinea fed regular feed and fed biofloc at the adult stage in parallel. The systematic bacterial community composition was determined based on the next-generation sequencing method, and alpha diversity and beta diversity were conducted to access the species diversity within and between the bacterial communities, respectively. The composition of the gut flora changed considerably as the rockworms developed. The shift in the gut flora was confirmed at the phylum, family, and genera level of the bacterial communities. The Vibrio species associated with high rockworm mortality occupied 7.7% of the gut flora at the larval stage; however, they disappeared in the healthy adult gut. Moreover, different gut flora was observed between adults fed regular feed and those fed biofloc. Specifically in the biofloc-fed adult gut, several immune relevant and water-purifying bacteria were detected. The biofloc-fed adult gut flora could decompose and mineralize organic sediment, and thus be effectively utilized for integrated multitrophic aquaculture. The Venn diagram revealed that only two bacterial species were shared throughout all growth stages, and the biofloc-fed adults exhibited the highest diversity within the bacterial community.
