  • Purpose : The aim of this article is to describe the nurses' experiential learning mechanism on patient safety. Methods : To analyze nurses' learning experiences on patient safety cases, a focus-group interview method was used. The Kolb's experiential learning model was used as a reference model. Findings : Without deep reflective reasoning about specific experiences, there is no creative or innovative solutions to experiment actively. Nurses are likely to be reluctant learners when there is no systemic support from formal departments which is in charge of patient safety and quality of care. Conclusion : In order to build patient safety culture in hospital, there should be efforts to make nurses as active learners on patient safety as well as to build learning environments in medical units.

  • According to previous report, aged sleeves of old transmission line showed several defaulted installation patterns, which is biased or corrosive-fractured of steel sleeve installed cases. The latter case occupied almost 25 percent of investigated aged sleeves. These defects can cause serious accidents such as rapid increasing of sag or falling out of overhead conductor from sleeves. This paper studies thermal properties and tension for ACSR conductor in case of fractured steel sleeve model. The detailed results were presented in the text.

  • U-Channel Bridge is effective bridge type, because its edge beam performs role of barrier and enables to reduce additional dead loads. Nevertheless, there is possibility of bridge collapse under impact load due to car crash. Also, edge beam must have ability to induce safe driving and prevent falling accidents. Therefore, this study carries out analysis of behavior of edge beam and slab and evaluation of structural stability under impact loads, based on Korean Highway Bridge Design Specifications and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification. According to analysis result, the maximum stress of edge beam and slab satisfies specification of allowable stress.

  • Surge proof equipment is an installation to make surge flow on the ground promptly so as to reduce surge-related damage on infrastructure, not to prevent surge from falling down on infrastructure directly. Compared with classical line individual earth, High speed line common earth has higher surge characteristic and plays a significant role to prevent infrastructure damage and injuries from surge, or short circuit accident between 25kV catenary and rail. In this paper, we analyzed the case of accident that caused communication/signaling system impaired while a tractor crossing level crossing at Honam line; in addition, we examined the accident reduction measures to minimize injury and property damage from cutting accidents with respect to common earth network.

  • The large-scaled and high-rise construction structures in recent years have increased high place work, leading to an increase in falling accidents (hereinafter, "accidents"). The need for prediction and management of unsafe acts of workers at construction sites has been raised as unsafe acts of workers are identified as the main cause of industrial accidents. This research aims at deriving the improvement effect of unsafe acts by presenting the relationship between unsafe acts of workers and accidents at construction sites as a probability. Unsafe acts of workers were derived based on the analysis of accident cases. In addition, surveys were conducted to calculate the probability of occurrence of accidents caused by unsafe acts (hereinafter, 'accident probability'). The Event Tree Analysis (ETA) was utilized to confirm the final probability according to the combination of unsafe acts and improvement effect. The accident probability by unsafe act was found to be the highest for working after drinking (95.41%) and to be the lowest for equipment and machine utilization (65.70%). The accident probability according to a combination of unsafe acts was the highest when all of the unsafe acts were conducted (13.23%) and was the lowest when none of the unsafe acts were conducted (0.00%).

  • This study looked over the laws and regulations related to forestry workers to analyze the safety accident rates for the past five years (2006-2010), and to suggest improvement plans to reduce the safety accident rates of forestry workers. Findings from comparing information obtained from data are outlined below. The safety accident rates had gradually increased in the forestry fields until 2010, but nowaday it is on the decline. Furthermore, the safety accident rates in the field of forestry were still serious compared to those in the other industrial fields as from 2.1 to 5.1 times. In the results, the workers were especially vulnerable to safety accidents when they fell under the following categories: when falling; within 29 to 90 days after starting the work; over 60 years old; less than one month of service; October; Wednesday; 11 a.m.; and the nether limbs of the body. In the case of Jeollabuk-do, it was reported that more than half of victims did not have any training in safety.

  • The conventional CCTV surveillance system for preventing accidents and incidents misses 95% of the data after 22 minutes where one person monitors multiple CCTV. To address this issue, researchers have studied the computer-based intelligent video surveillance system for notifying people of the abnormal situation. However, because the system is involved in the problems of power consumption and costs, the intelligent video surveillance system based on embedded modules has been studied. This paper implements the intelligent video surveillance system based on embedded modules for detecting intruders, detecting fires and detecting loitering, falling. Moreover, the algorithm and the embedded module optimization method are applied to implement real-time processing. The intelligent video surveillance system based on embedded modules is implemented in Raspberry Pi. The algorithm processing time is 0.95 seconds on Raspberry Pi before optimization, and 0.47 seconds on Raspberry Pi after optimization, reduced processing time by 50.52%. Therefore, this suggests real processing possibility of the intelligent video surveillance system based on the embedded modules is possible.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with falls among older adults. This cross-sectional study used the data of 10,272 older adults who participating in the Korean Elderly survey, including demographic and health related characteristics. The data were analyzed with complex samples in SPSS ver. 23.0. The results of multiple logistic regression analysis showed that age (OR=1.262, 95%CI 1.111-1.433), education (OR=0.846, 95%CI 0.764-0.937), subjective health status (OR=1.172, 95% CI 1.041-1.320; OR=1.422, 95%CI 1.289-1.570), number of chronic illness (OR=1.438, 95%CI 1.050-1.968), number of medications (OR=0.798, 95%CI 0.659-0.967), muscle strength of low extremities (OR=1.260, 95%CI 1.101-1.441), and fear of falling (OR=3.576, 95%CI 3.166-4.039; OR=14.236, 95%CI 12.637-16.038)were significantly associated with fall accidents in the elderly. Thus, it is necessary to develop fall prevention program to reduce fear of falling and improve health status in the elderly.
