  • Almost all accelerated life tests assume that no basic failure mechanism changes within the test stresses. But accelerated life test, considering failure mechanism changes, is needed since failure mechanism changes when accelerating beyond the used stress. This paper studies the analysis when the failure mechanism changes within the test stresses. The piecewise linear regression, which the join point of two lines is estimated, is applied In particular, two accelerated life tests, with and without a change in failure mechanism are examined.

  • Software failure time presented in the literature exhibit either constant monotonic increasing or monotonic decreasing, For data analysis of software reliability model, data scale tools of trend analysis are developed. The methods of trend analysis are arithmetic mean test and Laplace trend test. Trend analysis only offer information of outline content. In this paper, we discuss forecasting failure time case of failure time censoring. In this study, time series analys is used in the simple moving average and weighted moving averages, exponential smoothing method for predict the future failure times, Empirical analysis used interval failure time for the prediction of this model. Model selection using the mean square error was presented for effective comparison.

  • The inter-development of FMECA is very important to assess the effect of potential failures during system operation on mission, safety and performance. Among these, criticality analysis is a core task that identifies items with high risk and selects the analyzed objects as the key management targets and reflects their effects to the design optimization. In this paper, we analyze the theory related to criticality analysis following US military standard, and propose a method to quantify the failure effect probability for objective criticality analysis. The criticality analysis according to the US military standard depends on the subjective judgment of the failure probability. The methodology for quantifying the failure effect probability is presented by using the reliability theory and the Bayes theorem. The failure rate is calculated by applying the method to quantify failure effect probability.

  • The system and components for aircraft are required the design data on which the safety requirements are properly reflected for their certification. This paper presents the procedure and results of a safety assessments analysis for the rotorcraft fuel pumps in oder to confirm and verify them. The fuel pumps design assessment must be performed, including a detailed failure analysis to identify all failures that will prevent continued safe flight or safe landing. In order to assess the fuel pumps design safety, not only system safety hazard analysis and but FTA(Fault Tree Analysis) for proofing the safety objective of the fuel pumps are performed. The results of the safety assessment for fuel pumps validate that no single failure or malfunction could result in catastrophic failure or critical accidents of the rotorcraft.

  • Composite structures have components and joints. Theses connections or joints can be potentially weak points in the structure. The failure mode of the composite bolted joint is designed as a bearing failure mode for structural safety. The load-displacement relation exhibits bearing failure mode shows a nonlinear behavior after the initial failure and progressive failure behavior. In order to accurately predict the failure behavior of composite bolted joints, this study modified the shear damage variable calculation process in the existing progressive failure analysis model. The results of the bearing stress-bearing strain of the composite bolted joint were predicted using the modified progressive failure analysis model, and the modified model was verified through comparison with the previous progressive analysis model.

  • The failure rate of bidirectional dc-to-dc converter is predicted through the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) and the fault-tree analysis (FTA) considering the operational risk. In order to increase the driving voltage of the electric vehicle efficiently, the bidirectional converter is attached to the front of the inverter. It has a boost mode for discharging battery power to the dc-link capacitor and a buck mode for charging the regenerative power to the battery. Based on the results of the FMEA considering the operating characteristics of the bidirectional converter, the fault-tree is designed considering the risk of the converter. After setting the design parameters for the MCU for the electric vehicle, we analyze the failure rate of the capacitor due to the output voltage ripple and the inductor component failure rate due to the inductor current ripple. In addition, we obtain the failure rate of major parts according to operating temperature using MIL-HDBK-217F. Finally, the failure rate and the mean time between failures (MTBF) of the converter are predicted by reflecting the part failure rate to the basic event of the fault-tree.

  • Truss type structures are attractive to a variety of engineering applications on earth as well as in space due to their high stiffness to mass ratios and ease of construction and fabrication. During the service life, an individual member of a truss structure may lose load carrying capacity due to many reasons, which may lead to collapse of the structure. An analytical and computational procedure has been developed to study the response of truss structures subject to member failure under static and dynamic loadings. Emphasis is given to the dynamic effects of member failure and the propagation of local damage to other parts of the structure. The methodology developed is based on nonlinear finite element analysis technique and considers elasto-plastic material nonlinearity, postbuckling of members, and large deformation geometric nonlinearity. The pseudo force approach is used to represent the member failure. Results obtained for a planar nine-bay indeterminate truss undergoing sequential member failure show that failure of one member can initiate failure of several members in the structure.

  • A failure analysis of tungsten filaments used in quadrupole mass spectrometer for plasma process monitoring was carried by using SEM and EDS. Failed at high temperature, filaments showed two kinds of failure modes. The one is that diameter of filament became thinner gradually and finally snapped. The other is that filament abruptly snapped almost at a right angle. The EDS analysis showed Fe and C, including W and Fe, on the surface of failed filament. when failed filaments were treated with plasma in mixture of Ar and $CF_4$, the amount of Fe and C decreased. The failure analysis of filament showed that the cause of filament failure is thermal evaporation and grain growth of tungsten at high temperature.

  • The reliability data analysis for components of CNC machining center is studied in this paper. The failure data of mechanical part is analyzed by Exponential, Weibull, and Log-normal distributions. And then, the optimum failure distribution model is selected by goodness of fit test. The reliability data analysis program is developed with ASP language to use on the Internet. The failure rate, MTBF, life, and failure mode of mechanical parts are estimated and searched by this program. The failure data and analysis results are stored in the database.

Layered finite element method in cracking and failure analysis of RC beams and beam-column-slab connections

  • A nonlinear semi-three-dimensional layered finite element procedure is developed for cracking and failure analysis of reinforced concrete beams and the spandrel beam-column-slab connections of flat plates. The layered element approach takes the elasto-plastic failure behaviour and geometric nonlinearity into consideration. A strain-hardening plasticity concrete model and a smeared steel model are incorporated into the layered element formulation. Further, shear failure, transverse reinforcement, spandrel beams and columns are successfully modelled. The proposed method incorporating the nonlinear constitutive models for concrete and steel is implemented in a finite element program. Test specimens including a series of reinforced concrete beams and beam-column-slab connections of flat plates are analysed. Results confirm the effectiveness and accuracy of the layered procedure in predicting both flexural and shear cracking up to failure.
