  • According to the chlorous salt method, most of holocellulose whose lignin was removed, was obtained. In extracting xylan from holocellulose by the different densities of alkali, 5% KOH was extracted three times but still there remained part of xylan in it and another composite of hemicellulose and cellulose was obtained. The extraction of 10% and 20% KOH showed a desirable result. Rather than the ordinary method to use a large quantity of ethanol in the precipitation isolation of xylan, the method to use a small quantity of ethanol in adopting the dialysis with cellophane-membrane by condensing density to one tenth, made il possible to extract a high purity xylan in a high retrieving rate. In isolating glucomannan, the residue of 5% KOH extraction contained a large quantity of xylan, the residue of 10% and 24% KOH extraction, also showed the same result and the comparison between glucose and mannose was approximately 1 : 1. The purification of Fehling solution made it possible to obtain comparatively pure xylan but the process of oxidation dissolution was complicated and the retrieving rate was low. This was not a good method. The ethanol titration purified a high purity xylan in a high retrieving rate and was a very excellent purifying method, considering its simple and easy process. These two purifying methods, however, could not completely remove the residue of arabinose. This will be examined and reported later.

  • Diarrhetic shellfish poisons (DSP) such as okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1), pectenotoxin-1(PTX1), PTX2, PTX6 and yessotoxin (YTX) were determined simultaneously by LC-MS/MS and mouse bioassay in the shellfishes (oyster, mussel, Washington purple clam, ark shell, scallop and short necked clam) collected at Tongyeong, from March to September, 2006. Oyster and mussel were found to contain DSP (0.05${\sim}$0.1 MU/g) in March by mouse bioassay; however, no DSP components were detected on the LC-MS/MS. Also, a small amount of DTX1 (0.05 ${\mu}g/g$) in mussel (June) and OA (0.01${\sim}$0.02 ${\mu}g/g$) in 5 species of shellfishes(August) were determined by LC-MS/MS.

  • The growth and yield models for five different kinds of natural forest types were systemically developed in the natural Broadleaved-Korean pine Forests in Northeast China. The data were collected from 359 temporary plots and 58 permanent plots with area ranged from 0.06 ha to 1.0 ha, ranging in stand age from 43 to 364 years. The Site Class Index (SCI) was introduced to evaluate site quality and the Crown Competition Factor (CCF) was selected as a measure of stand density for the mixed natural forest. The Chapman-Richards function was adopted to develop SCI equation and height-diameter curve. The Schumacher growth function was selected as base model to develop the DBH, basal area, and stand volume growth models by using re-parameterized method. In modeling mean DBH and basal area growth, it was found that the asymptotic parameter A of Schumacher function was exponentially related to site quality (SCI) and stand density (CCF). The rate parameter k was related to stand density and it was independent of SCI. Several validation measures for predicted stand variables were evaluated in the growth and yield models using independent data sets. The results indicated that relative mean errors (RME) in predicted stand attributes were less than ${\pm}5%$ and the estimated precision values of the stand variables were all greater than 95%.

  • To clarify the soil N dynamics, the relationship between soil N and vegetation recovery after volcanic eruptions was investigated in two stands dominated by black locust(Robinia pseudo-acacia L.) on volcano Mt. Showa-Shinzan, northern Japan, from August 1999 to July 1996. No significant differences were observed between the two stands with respect to soil chemical properties and soil extractable N. At both stands, total N concentration were high in spring and declined through the summer and fall. The peaks in concentrations of extractable $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ occurred in July at both stands. $NH_4{^+}$ mineralization showed a conspicuous peak in June and July throughout the study period. Extractable $NO_3{^-}$ concentration and nitrification rates at the two stands during the study period were relatively high. Negative values for $NH_4{^+}$ mineralization at both stands were found in August. Extractable $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ concentrations were correlated positively with soil organic matter, and nitrification rates were controlled by $NH_4{^+}$ mineralization and extractable $NH_4{^+}$ concentration at both stands.

  • The forest vegetation developing on Mt. Inwang, an isolated forestland in Seoul, Korea was analyzed phytosociologically and its spatial distribution mapped out. Using the vegetation map, The characteristics of landscape structures in terms of the number and size of patches are discussed. Forest vegetation of the study area was classified into ten communities, ten groups, and eighty subgroups. Landscape element types were classified into secondary forests, relict communities, introduced plantations, and other elements including urbanized area. Pinus densiflora community, natural forest and Robinia pseudo-acacia community, plantation, formed matrix and some secondary forest elements, relict communities and the ether plantations of small size tended to distribute as small patches in such matrix. The number of patches per unit area in secondary forest elements was more than that in plantation elements. The result in patch size was vice versa. The vascular plant species richness of the landscape element types in Mt. Inwang was found to he positively related to their size. As the results of landscape ecological analyses, it was estimated that differentiation of patches recognized in community level would be related to human interference a and those in subordinate levels to natural process such as progression of succession.

  • Styela plicata of large (9.82~11.66 g) and small (0.93~2.21 g) sizes harvested at different times was extracted with 4 different solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetone, and water). DPPH radical scavenging and reducing power was the highest in acetone extracts of small ones (38.98% and 1.724, respectively) harvested in November. The lowest radical scavenging activity was found in water extracts of large ones (12.03% and 0.114) in December. On the other hand, large ones harvested in September showed significantly higher inhibition rate of DNA damage (water, 56.54%; methanol, 55.83%; ethanol, 48.63%) than others. Overall, the water extraction of S. plicata tended to show a higher antigenotoxic effect. In addition, water extracts of large S. plicata from November showed the highest angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity (64.38%), while that of small ones from December exhibited the lowest (51.33%). Overall the results indicate that antioxidant and antihypertensive activities S. plicata are variable depending on harvesting time, size, and extraction solvent.

  • Based on stem analysis as well as branch analysis data of each tree from 8 plots of circle clear-cutting and 1 biomass plot in Changbai Mountain area, located in Northeast of China, the effective crown form of Changbai larch(Larix olgensis H.) plantation were studied by using the approach of crown curve. The results indicated that the cross-section forms of effective crown were stable and showed approximate circle for different tree size. Because the effective crown was on upper position of the canopy and its form reflects crown architecture under non-competition condition, the architecture is mainly affected by species hereditary feature. Therefore, for the specified species the effective crown form was thought to be relatively stable. The effective crown form of tree was neither related to the tree size within stand nor to the stand condition for different stand. The total effective crown curve of larch plantation could be characterized by using mean effective crown taper.

  • Genetic variation of notorious invasive plants, common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) and giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) were examined using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA. A total of 18 different ITS types were detected from 156 individuals of common ragweed sampled mainly from the southern part of Korean peninsula whereas four types were identified from 46 individuals of giant ragweed. High sequence diversity observed from common ragweed in Korean populations was interpreted as multiple introduction. Genetic recombination was suggested as possible method for the production of some of the ITS types while point mutation was mainly responsible for the origin of the sequence diversity. This study provided some of basic genetic information needed for understanding of the evolutionary process in ragweed during invasion.

  • The pink citrus rust mite, Aculops pelekassi (Keifer) (Acari: Eriophyoidea), is an important pest in the citrus orchards of Jeju, Korea. This study was performed to investigate the seasonal population abundance of A. pelekassi, and the effects of humidity and citrus leaf age on the multiplication of this pest. Relative humidity (RH) significantly affected the longevity and fecundity of A. pelekassi. Longevity was 7.5, 14.5 and 14.6 d and fecundity was 5.4, 21.5, and 27.1 eggs at 33, 75 and 84% RH, respectively. The leaf age of citrus significantly affected the multiplication of A. pelekassi. The population abundance on 40 day-old leaves was much higher more than 3 times that on 10-day old leaves at 4 weeks after introduction. Overwintered A. pelekassi adults between the bud scales of the citrus trees became active in late April; they were found on newly emerged leaves, followed by their settlement on young fruits in mid-June. The population levels of A. pelekassi peaked on the leaves in late June to July, and on the fruits in early August. The results obtained in this study should be useful for the control of A. pelekassi in citrus orchards in Jeju.

  • The damage of citrus fruits caused by Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood has being increased in Jeju, Korea. The seasonal abundance of S. dorsalis and its injury symptoms in citrus orchards have been studied since the endemic outbreak in Jeju, but studies for the occurrence pattern of S. dorsalis in citrus orchards influenced by adjacent primary hosts have not been fully conducted yet. We selected kiwi- and mango-citrus adjacent orchards to study the migration pattern of S. dorsalis toward to citrus orchards. Yellow-colored sticky traps were used for monitoring the seasonal abundance of S. dorsalis and their migration pattern in two orchards. In citrus orchards, also, we placed sticky traps at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 m apart from the border of kiwi orchard, and 0, 7 and 20 m apart from the border of mango orchard. The seasonal occurrence pattern of S. dorsalis caught on sticky traps were similar between two adjacent orchards. However, the abundances in kiwi or mango orchard was much higher than those of citrus. Also, it was found that densities, distribution and damage of S. dorsalis in citrus orchards depend highly on the distance from the border of kiwi and mango orchards. This result suggested that the primary hosts such as kiwi and mango plants influence the occurrence of S. dorsalis in adjacent citrus orchards. And this information may provide a basic direction for establishing the management strategy of S. dorsalis in citrus orchards.
