  • The study was made on the facial profile of the normal Korean adults using the roentgenographic cephalograms. The subjects ccnsisted of 50 males and 50 females with the normal occlusion. The measurements were made of the facial angles in skeletal pattern and depth, height and the length in the soft tissue profile. The mean and standard deviations from the subjects were calculated and compared with the samples of male and female. The authors have drawn the conclusions as follows: 1. Compared with the angulation in skeletal patterns, there were no differences between both sexes. 2. Individual variations of the lower face were larger than the upper face in most measuring points. 3. Generally, facial heights were lesser than facial depth in sexual differences. 4. Most dimensions of the facial depth, height and length of the male were larger than those of female.

  • Facial esthetics is one of the most important goal of the orthodontic treatment and main concern of many patients. Facial esthetics should be considered in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Prediction of soft tissue profile changes after orthodontic tooth movement should be considered as well. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of orthodontic treatment on lip profile in adult patient. The pre and post treatment cephalometric roentgenograms of 87 female adult with bimaxillary protrusion were used to analyze lip profile change. All subjects were treated with four bicuspids extraction. Obtained results were as follows . 1. Lip thickness changes after incisor retraction showed different patterns according to areas of the lip. The thickness of the red lip area showed 2.78 mm increase in average. In contrast the thickness of the cutaneous area showed 0.65 - 0.7 mm decrease according to the different cutaneous areas. 2. The length of the red lip area decreased(1.3mm) after incisor retraction. 3. The length of the cutaneous lip area increased(2.9mm) after incisor retraction.

  • The purpose of the present study is to evaluate changes of the soft tissue relative to underlying skeletal elements during orthodontic treatment, and the influence of orthodontic treatment quantitatively on various regions of the facial profile. 59 Korean young women were selected, whose Hellman dental age was IV A, IV C and V A. Lateral cephalometric head films were taken before and after orthodontic treatment. From tracings, landmarks on skeletal and soft tissue profile were located, and then their linear and angular measurements were made directly. The results were obtained as follow: 1) Soft tissues of the facial profile were closely related and dependent on the underlying dentoskeletal frameworks. Orthodontic treament resulted in the reduction of dentofacial protrusion with both upper and lower lips becoming less procumbent during treament. 2) Thickness of the upper lip increased considerably during orthodontic treatment, and this change was related to maxillary incisor retraction. The ratio between the amount of maxillary incisor retraction and that of increment of upper lip thickness was approximately 5:3. 3) Soft tissue thickness overlying Downs' point A, point B and pogonion was not modified by orthodontic treatment. 4) Holdaway's H line, relating facial profile to the underlying dentoskeletal framework, seemed to be the most practical approach to soft tissue analysis.

  • A roentgenographic cephalometric study was made on the soft and hard tissue profile of Korean adults. The subject consisted of 52 males and 54 females from 17 to 22 years of age and with normal occlusion and acceptable profile. Twenty one landmarks were plotted and two oriented lines named SnH line and SnV line were drawn on the tracings of all cephalograms. The means and the standard deviations from the subjects were calculated in each measuring category and the means were compared with those of male and femal samples. The results were obtained as follow: 1. In depth and height, individual variations and sex differences of the lower facial profile were larger than the upper face. 2. The sex differences of upper facial profile were larger in height than depth. 3. The individual variations and sex differences of the top of nose were the smallest in all measuring points. 4. The thickness of the soft tissue of upper face and upper lip in male sample were larger than those of female, but the same matter were not found in mental region.

  • This study was designed to test the possibility of using a standardized lateral facial photographs as a clinical tool which produce the prediction of postsurgical soft-tissue profile changes associated with surgical correction in skeletal CIII patients. The number of the patients involved in this study were 27 in total, including 11 male patients and 16 female patients. A practical method to the utilization of presurgical photo prediction for mandibular prognathic patients has been presented. To predict postoperative facial appearance, montage photographs were superimposed on standard facial reference photos taken preoperatively. Within the limitations of its technology, postoperative predictions generated by this method were of sufficient accuracy, especially mandible and chin area, for clinical use. In addition, they provide valuable communication and diagnostic information which may be used in formulating treatment plan in cases requiring corrective orthognathic surgery. But, the lip changes were somewhat exaggerated by photo prediction. Consequently, the photo prediction seems suitable for planning profile changes in orthognathic surgery that include mobilization of one main mandibular fragment. Futher investigations are needed to determine whether changes of soft-tissues and hard-tissues are sufficiently reproducible so that more meaningful predictive values can be established.

  • This paper presents 2 clinical cases of facial asymmetry resulted from vertical asymmetry of the maxilla and unilateral hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle. Both patients, a 27 year 4 month old female and a 17 year 1 month old male, had a anterior crossbite with deviated dental midline and a concave profile. Both cases were treated with orthodontic and orthognathic procedure. The following results were obtained; 1. The facial asymmetry was favorably corrected. 2. The concave profile was improved. 3. The anterior crossbite was corrected. 4. The upper and lower dental midlines against the facial midline were corrected. 5. The functional overbite and overjet were established.

  • In order to solve the problem of repositioning the old hader bar attachment and to restore the non-esthetic facial profile and improper occlusion of the edentulous patient due to inadequate jaw relation, determination of vertical dimension of occlusion and tooth arrangement were performed similar to the natural teeth before the teeth loss. In addition to improving the esthetics by restoring the inadequate facial appearance, the composite resin was used to maximize the patient's secondary esthetic satisfaction with the denture.

  • Facial balance is the primary detevminant of good facial esthetics and is expressed externally by the shape of facial soft tissues. Balance of the facial skeleton is most important in prediction of orthognathic surgery, however, it is not alwags coincided to soft tissue balance because the soft tissue drapes overlying hard tissue varies in thickness and tones from case to case. So, soft tissue facial balance and esthetics also should always be considered in prediction of hard tissue changes preoperatively. The chin has a paramount importance in the overall appearance of the face and facial profile because it may express individual charactor or image. Therefore positional change of the chin must be considered in any cases as the last and important option to give an overall soft tissue balance. Two cases were referred from orthodontists only for anterior segmental of teortomuy of the chin. Pre-operative evaluation showed poor soft tissue chin profiles which were not coincided to hard tissue chin balance. We altered surgical plans to fulfill balancing soft tissue profile and then could improve overall esthetics after surgery.

  • The purpose of this study was to survey a preference to the esthetic profile between Korean women and Korean American women. The interviewee were consisted of 30 Korean women and 30 Korean American women respectively. The survey has been done by using questionnaire. Altered facial profile of each normal male and female was got by moving maxilla, mandible to the front and back to survey the preference among the various profile. Then results were analyzed by SPSS program. The results were as follows, 1. In Korean women, in choosing the men's profile, 9 people out of 30, picked the standard profile as a most preferred profile, and bimaxillary retrusion and bimaxillary protrusion profile were followed by 6 people and 5people respectively. 2. In Korean American women, in choosing the men's profile, the 18 people out of 30, pick the bimaxillary retruded profile as a most preferred profile, and the standard profile were followed. 3. In Korean women, in choosing the women's profile, 18 people out of 30, picked the bimaxillary retruded profile as a most beautiful profile, and standard profile were followed by having 10people's voting. 4. In Korean American women, in choosing the women's profile, the 14 people out of 30, chose the bimaxillary retruded profile as a best one and the standard profile were followed by 12 people's voting. The preference of men's profile was significantly different between two groups (p<0.05) but the both group picked the bimaxillary retruded profile as a most beautiful when they choose the women's profile and then there was no statistical difference between the groups.

  • In this paper, we suggest an authentication system for online lecture using facial information and a face recognition algorithm base on relation of face. First, a facial area on complex background is detected using color information. Second, features are extracted with edge profile. Third, compare it with the value of original facial image in database. By experiments, we know that the proposed system is an useful method for online lecture authentication system.
