An Intelligent Emotion Recognition Model Using Facial and Bodily Expressions

  • As sensor technologies and image processing technologies make collecting information on users' behavior easy, many researchers have examined automatic emotion recognition based on facial expressions, body expressions, and tone of voice, among others. Specifically, many studies have used normal cameras in the multimodal case using facial and body expressions. Thus, previous studies used a limited number of information because normal cameras generally produce only two-dimensional images. In the present research, we propose an artificial neural network-based model using a high-definition webcam and Kinect to recognize users' emotions from facial and bodily expressions when watching a movie trailer. We validate the proposed model in a naturally occurring field environment rather than in an artificially controlled laboratory environment. The result of this research will be helpful in the wide use of emotion recognition models in advertisements, exhibitions, and interactive shows.

  • In this paper, we address the challenging computer vision problem of obtaining a reliable facial expression analysis from a naturally interacting person. We propose a system that combines a 3D generic face model, 3D head tracking, and 2D tracker to track facial landmarks and recognize expressions. First, we extract facial landmarks from a neutral frontal face, and then we deform a 3D generic face to fit the input face. Next, we use our real-time 3D head tracking module to track a person's head in 3D and predict facial landmark positions in 2D using the projection from the updated 3D face model. Finally, we use tracked 2D landmarks to update the 3D landmarks. This integrated tracking loop enables efficient tracking of the non-rigid parts of a face in the presence of large 3D head motion. We conducted experiments for facial expression recognition using both framebased and sequence-based approaches. Our method provides a 75.9% recognition rate in 8 subjects with 7 key expressions. Our approach provides a considerable step forward toward new applications including human-computer interactions, behavioral science, robotics, and game applications.

An Efficient Facial Expression Recognition by Measuring Histogram Distance Based on Preprocessing (전처리 기반 히스토그램 거리측정에 의한 효율적인 표정인식)

  • This paper presents an efficient facial expression recognition method by measuring the histogram distance based on preprocessing. The preprocessing that uses both centroid shift and histogram equalization is applied to improve the recognition performance, The distance measurement is also applied to estimate the similarity between the facial expressions. The centroid shift based on the first moment balance technique is applied not only to obtain the robust recognition with respect to position or size variations but also to reduce the distance measurement load by excluding the background in the recognition. Histogram equalization is used for robustly recognizing the poor contrast of the images due to light intensity. The proposed method has been applied for recognizing 72 facial expression images(4 persons * 18 scenes) of 320*243 pixels. Three distances such as city-block, Euclidean, and ordinal are used as a similarity measure between histograms. The experimental results show that the proposed method has superior recognition performances compared with the method without preprocessing. The ordinal distance shows superior recognition performances over city-block and Euclidean distances, respectively.

  • Facial expression recognition technology that has potentialities for applying various fields is appling on the man-machine interface development, human identification test, and restoration of facial expression by virtual model etc. Using sequential facial images, this study proposes a simpler method for detecting human facial expressions such as happiness, anger, surprise, and sadness. Moreover the proposed method can detect the facial expressions in the conditions of the sequential facial images which is not rigid motion. We identify the determinant face and elements of facial expressions and then estimates the feature regions of the elements by using information about color, size, and position. In the next step, the direction patterns of feature regions of each element are determined by using optical flows estimated gradient methods. Using the direction model proposed by this study, we match each direction patterns. The method identifies a facial expression based on the least minimum score of combination values between direction model and pattern matching for presenting each facial expression. In the experiments, this study verifies the validity of the Proposed methods.

The interaction between emotion recognition through facial expression based on cognitive user-centered television (이용자 중심의 얼굴 표정을 통한 감정 인식 TV의 상호관계 연구 -인간의 표정을 통한 감정 인식기반의 TV과 인간의 상호 작용 연구)

  • In this study we focus on the effect of the interaction between humans and reactive television when emotion recognition through facial expression mechanism is used. Most of today's user interfaces in electronic products are passive and are not properly fitted into users' needs. In terms of the user centered device, we propose that the emotion based reactive television is the most effective in interaction compared to other passive input products. We have developed and researched next generation cognitive TV models in user centered. In this paper we present a result of the experiment that had been taken with Fraunhofer IIS $SHORE^{TM}$ demo software version to measure emotion recognition. This new approach was based on the real time cognitive TV models and through this approach we studied the relationship between humans and cognitive TV. This study follows following steps: 1) Cognitive TV systems can be on automatic ON/OFF mode responding to motions of people 2) Cognitive TV can directly select channels as face changes (ex, Neutral Mode and Happy Mode, Sad Mode, Angry Mode) 3) Cognitive TV can detect emotion recognition from facial expression of people within the fixed time and then if Happy mode is detected the programs of TV would be shifted into funny or interesting shows and if Angry mode is detected it would be changed to moving or touching shows. In addition, we focus on improving the emotion recognition through facial expression. Furthermore, the improvement of cognition TV based on personal characteristics is needed for the different personality of users in human to computer interaction. In this manner, the study on how people feel and how cognitive TV responds accordingly, plus the effects of media as cognitive mechanism will be thoroughly discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to recognize the facial expressions by selecting face elements and finding its status. The face elements are selected by using image area segmentation method and the facial expression is decided by using the normal distribution of the change rate of the face elements. In order to recognize the proper facial expression, we have built database of facial expressions of 90 people and propose a method to decide one of the four expressions (happy, anger, stress, and sad). The proposed method has been simulated and verified by face element detection rate and facial expressions recognition rate.

  • It is difficult to recognize Human's facial expression in the real-world. For these reason, when database and test data have similar condition, we can accomplish high accuracy. Solving these problem, we need to many facial expression data. In this paper, we propose the algorithm for gathering many facial expression data within various environment and gaining high accuracy quickly. This algorithm is training initial model with the ASSL (Active Semi-Supervised Learning) using deep learning network, thereafter gathering unlabeled facial expression data and repeating this process. Through using the ASSL, we gain proper data and high accuracy with less labor force.

  • For competitiveness of national B2C (Business to Customer) service industry, improvement of process and analysis focused on customer and change of service system are needed. In other words, a business and an organization should deduce and provide what kind of services customers want. Then, evaluate customers' satisfaction and improve the service quality. To achieve this goal, accurate feedbacks from customers play an important role; however, there are not quantitative and standard systems a lot in nation. Recently, the researches about ICT (Information and Communication Technology) that can recognize emotion of human being are on the increase. The facial expression recognition among them is known as most efficient and natural human interface. This research analyzes about more efficient facial expression recognition and suggests a customer satisfaction feedback system using that.

  • Facial expression recognition technology's rapid growth and development have garnered significant attention in recent years. This technology holds immense potential for various applications, making it crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and advancements. Simultaneously, it is essential to identify and address the challenges that impede the technology's progress. Motivated by these factors, this study aims to understand the latest trends, future directions, and challenges in facial expression recognition technology by utilizing text mining to analyze papers published between 2020 and 2023. Our research focuses on discerning which aspects of these papers provide valuable insights into the field's recent developments and issues. By doing so, we aim to present the information in an accessible and engaging manner for readers, enabling them to understand the current state and future potential of facial expression recognition technology. Ultimately, our study seeks to contribute to the ongoing dialogue and facilitate further advancements in this rapidly evolving field.

  • Human emotions are revealed by various factors. Words, actions, facial expressions, attire and so on. But people know how to hide their feelings. So we can not easily guess its sensitivity using one factor. We decided to pay attention to behaviors and facial expressions in order to solve these problems. Behavior and facial expression can not be easily concealed without constant effort and training. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to estimate human emotion through combination of two results by gradually learning human behavior and facial expression with little data through the deep learning method. Through this algorithm, we can more comprehensively grasp human emotions.
