We report clinical, cytogenetic, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies of a patient with ring chromosome 9. She presented with failure to thrive, facial dysmorphysm and mild psychomotor development delay in the absence of major malformations. Peripheral blood karyotype of the patient was 46,XX,r(9)(p24q34). G-band analysis suggested no loss of material in the ring chromosomes. FISH analysis using the subtelomere-specific sequences on chromosome 9p and 9q, revealed 46,XX,r(9)(p24q34),ish r(9)(D9S913-,D9S325+). Failure to detect any hybridization of a probe for the subtelomeric sequences in the ring 9p terminal suggested that this ring arose from breakage in the distal short arm. The cytogenetic and FISH data in our case provided further evidence for the existence of a "complete ring" phenotype with incomplete subtelomeric sequences.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the improvement of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and Bell's palsy after Oriental Medicine treatment Methods : Twelve patients with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and twenty patients with Bell's Palsy who visited the Iksan Oriental Medical Hospital of Wonkwang University were evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of before and after treatment of anterior openbite malocclusions treated by Multiloop Edgewise Archwire technique. The openbite sample consisted of 4 male and 12 female adults, treated with nonextraction or third molar extraction. The normal sample consisted of 58 subjects, which have pleasing facial profile and normal occlusion and no experience of orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment. The 58 subjects of normal sample were subdivided by cephalemetric vertical relationship of face. The 40 subjects, cephalometric vertical relationship of face was in normal range, classified as Normal Sample group 1. The 18 subjects, increased cephalometric vertical relationship of face, classified as Normal Sample group 2. The computerized cephalometric analysis was accomplished with 50 reference points for 22 skeletal measurements, 46 dentoalveolar measurements, 8 soft tissue measurements. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with paired t-test, Student's t-test, and DUNCAN test using SAS(PC version), The results were as follows : 1. There were no statistically significant differences in skeletal measurement between before and after treatment. The major changes were in dentoalveolar region. 2. After treatment, the long axis of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth were distally tipped-back, and uprighted to bisected occlusal plane. The interincisal angle was increased. 3. There were no statistically significant increase in the upper posterior dental height and statistically significant decrease in the lower posterior dental height. The upper anterior dental height was increased, but there was no statistically significant increase in the absolute upper anterior dental hight. The lower anterior dental height was increased. 4. After treatment, the maxillary occlusal plane to palatal plane angle and the mandibular occlusal plane to mandibular plane angle were statistically significant increased. Then, there were no statistically significant difference between after treatment group and normal sample group 2. 5. After treatment, the percentage of upper lip length to upper anterior dental height was decreased. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate correlation of the phlegm-retained fluid, namely Damum(痰飮) and dark circles under eyes. Methods: 2 males and 11 females aged 26-60 years were participated in this study. They were asked the intensity of 29 symptoms related with Damum(痰飮) including dark circle with the questionnaire published by the Journal of the Korea Institute of Oriental Medical Diagnostics. Three skin researchers including OMD graded the dark circles by inspection. We took the pictures around eyes by Facial Stage (Moritex, Japan) and analyzed the skin color by Image-Pro Plus (Media Cybernetics, USA). Results: There was statistically significant correlation between Damum(痰飮) and dark circles measured by self, inspectors and image analysis. Conclusions: In the Oriental Medicine, It is reported that the shadows under eyes are the sign of the retention of fluid, Damum(痰飮). In our study, that shadows, namely dark circles, has correlation with the symptoms of Damum(痰飮). Especially, the correlation between inspected grade and image analysis was very high. According to the above results, it is proved that dark circles under eyes are important diagnostic sign of Damum(痰飮).
The purposes of this study were to classify the university women according to their life styles and to analyze the cosmetic consumption behavior of classified groups. The results of this study may suggest cosmetics production and sales plan to manufactures and distributers and to provide cosmetic consumption guides for the university women. For empirical study a questionnaire developed by researchers was distributed to 456 of university women in Chonbuk province from Aug. 26 to Sep. 17 1998. Frequencies and percentages were claculated. And factor analysis cluster analysis and $\chi$2-test were used. The results were as follows: 1. University women were clustered into 5 types of sound and self pursuit type realistic and fashion pursuit type external and liberal type delightful and enjoying type and passive and stagnate type according to their life styles. 2. Sound and self pursuit type was characterized by the faithfulness to school and home life and economical lining. They got cosmetics information through direct experiences by use of samples put on full make-ups to protect their skin and selected refill cosmetic products to save money. 3. Realistic and fashion pursuit type were sensitive to fashion and had a strong desire for material achievement. They put on full make-ups exchange unsatisfactory cosmetics at the store where they bought and had a lot of imported cosmetics experiences. 4. External and liberal type showed little concern with saving and had progressive thinking. They bought cosmetics at the department store got informations from market-oriented information sources. perferred shopping at department stores considerred price most important when selecting cosmetics exchanged unsatisfactory cosmetics at the store they bought when they were not satisfied with the flavor or skin troule. 5. Delightful and enjoying type showed the least faithfulness to their home and school life. They put on partial make-ups for the correction of facial defects or etiquette. 6. Passive and stagnate type enjoyed home life but were passive in real life and open-mindness They got cosmetics information from marketer-oriented information sources bought cosmetics at discount stores considered price most important when selecting cosmetics put on basic or at least mke-ups to protect their skin had the least experience in the imported cosmetics and refill products.
Purpose: Chin is located in a prominent position, and is important to balance and harmony of the face. Genioplasty is widely performed with patients' high satisfaction, yet being relatively simple procedure. Recently in analysis of dentofacial trait, three rotational variables of yaw, pith, and roll are considered with three translational variables (forward/backward, up/down, right/left). And we could correct chin deformity effectively by applying the three rotational variables with three translational variables in genioplasty. Methods: Twenty-eight patients who have chin deformity underwent osseous genioplasty. Preoperative photography, facial three dimensional computed tomography, and cephalography were taken while chin deformities were accessed. The chin deformity was classified into four categories; macrogenia, microgenia, asymmetric chin deformity, and combined chin deformity groups. According to the nature of chin deformities and the patients' desire, preoperative plans were formulated, in consideration of three rotational variables and translational variables. Through intraoral approach, anterior mandible was exposed in the subperiosteal plane between the mental foramens and beneath the mental foramens. In the anterior mandible, vertical and horizontal grid lines with 5 mm intervals were marked to confirm the spatial location of osteomized bone segment after osteotomy. Chin repositioning was done in consideration of axial rotation and planar translation. Results: Most of the patients had achieved satisfactory results with few complications. By considering the three rotational variables, it was possible to make the chin repositioning effectively. One of the patients complained about insufficient chin correction. In other case, persistent sensory impairment around chin was observed. Conclusion: In conclusion, it is worthwhile to apply preoperative analysis and operative procedures in consideration of a three rotational variables with three translational variables in genioplasty.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate distribution of the admitted patients with disease of oral cavity, salivary glands and jaws, current clinical treatment condition and clinical dental practice. Methods: The subject were 4,564 patients with disease of oral cavity, salivary glands and jaws of the Korean National Hospital Discharge Injury Survey 2004-2008 data. This study was carried out using the administrative database including patients' characteristics and comorbidity. The statistical analysis for ratio, gender, age, region, primary diagnosis, comorbidity, operation, hospital location and bed size of inpatients in Korean National Hospital Discharge Injury Survey was conducted by frequency analysis. Results: Among the total discharge injury patients in 2004-2008, the trend showed decrease of ratio of patients with disease of oral cavity, salivary glands and jaws. The portion of male was higher than female, and 20~29 age group was the highest portion compared with other age groups. Seoul-Gyunggi region was the highest among the other residences. patients with Dentofacial anomalies[including malocclusion] as primary diagnosis, digestive system as comorbidity and operations on facial bones and joins showed the highest portion respectively. Seoul-Gyunggi region was the highest portion compared with other residences. 500~999 bed size showed the highest portion. Conclusion: In this study showed that distribution of patients with disease of oral cavity, salivary glands and jaws, current dental clinical treatment condition using the Korean National Hospital data.
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare posterior tooth inclinations, occlusal force, and contact area of adults with different sagittal malocclusions. Methods: Transverse skeletal parameters and posterior tooth inclinations were evaluated using cone beam computed tomography images, and occlusal force as well as contact area were assessed using pressure-sensitive films in 124 normodivergent adults. A linear mixed model was used to cluster posterior teeth into maxillary premolar, maxillary molar, mandibular premolar, and mandibular molar groups. Differences among Class I, II, and III groups were compared using an analysis of variance test and least significant difference post-hoc test. Correlations of posterior dental inclinations to occlusal function were analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: In male subjects, maxillary premolars and molars had the smallest inclinations in the Class II group while maxillary molars had the greatest inclinations in the Class III group. In female subjects, maxillary molars had the smallest inclinations in the Class II group, while maxillary premolars and molars had the greatest inclinations in the Class III group. Occlusal force and contact area were not significantly different among Class I, II, and III groups. Conclusions: Premolar and molar inclinations showed compensatory inclinations to overcome anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy in the Class II and III groups; however, their occlusal force and contact area were similar to those of Class I group. In subjects with normodivergent facial patterns, although posterior tooth inclinations may vary, difference in occlusal function may be clinically insignificant in adults with Class I, II, and III malocclusions.
Main researching issue in affective computing is to give a machine the ability to recognize the emotion of a person and to react it properly. Efforts in that direction have mainly focused on facial and oral cues to get emotions. Postures have been recently considered as well. This paper aims to discriminate emotions posture by identifying and measuring the saliency of posture features that play a role in affective expression. To do so, affective postures from human subjects are first collected using a motion capture system, then emotional features in posture are described with spatial ones. Through standard statistical techniques, we verified that there is a statistically significant correlation between the emotion intended by the acting subjects, and the emotion perceived by the observers. Discriminant Analysis are used to build affective posture predictive models and to measure the saliency of the proposed set of posture features in discriminating between 6 basic emotional states. The evaluation of proposed features and models are performed using a correlation between actor-observer's postures set. Quantitative experimental results show that proposed set of features discriminates well between emotions, and also that built predictive models perform well.

Objective: This study examined cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-derived multiplanar-reconstructed (MPR) cross-sections to clarify the salient characteristics of patients with skeletal class III malocclusion with midface deficiency (MD). Methods: The horizontal and sagittal plane intersection points were identified for middle-third facial analysis in 40 patients in the MD or normal (N) groups. MPR images acquired parallel to each horizontal plane were used for length and angular measurements. Results: A comparison of the MD and N groups revealed significant differences in the zygoma prominence among female patients. The convex zygomatic area in the N group was larger than that in the MD group, and the inferior part of the midface in the N group was smaller than that in the MD group for both male and female patients. A significant difference was observed in the concave middle maxillary area among male patients. Conclusions: This study was conducted to demonstrate the difference between MD and normal face through MPR images derived from CBCT. Male patients in the MD group had a more flattened face than did those in the N group. Female patients in the MD group showed a concave-shaped lower section of the zygoma, which tended to have more severe MD. These findings indicate that orthognathic surgery to improve skeletal discrepancy requires different approaches in male and female patients.
