Method for Classification of Age and Gender Using Gait Recognition (걸음걸이 인식을 통한 연령 및 성별 분류 방법)

  • Classification of age and gender has been carried out through different approaches such as facial-based and audio-based classifications. One of the limitations of facial-based methods is the reduced recognition rate over large distances, while another is the prerequisite of the faces to be located in front of the camera. Similarly, in audio-based methods, the recognition rate is reduced in a noisy environment. In contrast, gait-based methods are only required that a target person is in the camera. In previous works, the view point of a camera is only available as a side view and gait data sets consist of a standard gait, which is different from an ordinary gait in a real environment. We propose a feature extraction method using skeleton models from an RGB-D sensor by considering characteristics of age and gender using ordinary gait. Experimental results show that the proposed method could efficiently classify age and gender within a target group of individuals in real-life environments.

A Literature Review for an Emotion Evaluation Protocols Based on Skin Temperature for Home Appliances (피부온을 기반으로 한 가전제품의 감성 평가 프로토콜 수립을 위한 문헌 조사)

  • This study reviews studies that used skin temperature in order to establish an emotion evaluation protocol based on skin temperature for home appliances. A survey of skin temperature evaluation papers was conducted by the following five stages: (1) keyword search, (2) title screening, (3) abstract screening, (4) full paper screening, and (5) relevance evaluation. Selected papers were reviewed for: purpose, recruitment criteria of participants, the number of participants, apparatus, procedure, measures, analysis methods, and major findings. Thermistor sensors and thermography are used for the measurement of skin temperature. Skin temperature sensors are attached to 4 - 10 locations on the body and their mean of skin temperature is calculated by Ramanatan's 4-point or Hardy & Dubois's 7-point method. Semantic differential (SD) method and thermography measuring facial surface temperature have been used for emotion evaluation. The SD method provides a set of adjective pairs related to a product and evaluates changes in emotion from the use of the product. The range of facial surface analyzed is defined in the thermal image and temperature changes before and after the evaluation are analyzed. The evaluation items of home appliances include form, color, material, aesthetics, satisfaction, novelty, convenience, pleasantness, and excellence. Many existing emotion studies using skin temperature do not apply physiological and psychological methods. This study provides basic data to establish a skin temperature and emotion evaluation protocol by examining literature for skin temperature and evaluation of sensitivity.

The Clinical Analysis of Parotid Gland Tumors (이하선 종양에 관한 임상적 고찰)

  • Parotid tumors constitute about 70 to 80% of all salivary tumors. Two thirds of parotid neoplasms are benign. Women are affected more often than men. Plemorphic adenoma or benign mixed tumor is the most common parotid neoplasm, accounting for 50% of all parotid tumors. The clinical presentation is a discrete, slowly enlarging mass, rarely accompanied by pain or facial paralysis. We reviewed 69 cases of the parotid tumors admitted and treated at Department of Surgery, Kosin University Hospital from Jan, 1970 to June, 1994. The results were as follows: 1) Over all sex ratio was 1 : 1.56(M : F). The sex ratio of benign and malignant tumor was 1 : 1.43(M : F) and 1 : 2.2. 2) The mean duration of symptom was 4.6 years. 3) In the peak incidence of age, Benign tumor was in 4th decade, malignant tumor was in 2nd decade. 4) The chief complaint was painless palpable mass in 65 cases(94%) and pain in 4 cases(6%). 5) The mean size of mass was 2.5cm in diameter and the ratio of lesion site was 37 : 32(Rt : Lt). 6) Superficial parotidectomy was the most common procedure(43%). 7) According to histopathologic findings of 69 cases, Benign tumor was 56 cases(81%) and malignant tumor was 13 cases (19%). In the benign cases, pleomorphic adenoma was the most common(44 cases(65%)). In the malignant, mucoepidermoid ca. was the most common(5 cases (37%)). 8) Postoperative complication occured in 9 cases(13%), facial palsy was in 7 cases, and wound hematoma was 2 cases.

Side Face Features' Biometrics for Sasang Constitution (사상체질 판별을 위한 측면 얼굴 이미지에서의 특징 검출)

  • There are four types of human beings according to the Sasang Typology, Oriental medical doctors frequently prescribe healthcare information and treatment depending on one's type, The feature ratios (Table 1) on the human face are the most important criterions to decide which type a patient is. In this paper, we proposed a system to extract these feature ratios from the people's side face, There are two challenges in acquiring the feature ratio: one that selecting representative features; the other, that detecting region of interest from human profile facial image effectively and calculating the feature ratio accurately. In our system, an adaptive color model is used to separate human side face from background, and the method based on geometrical model is designed for region of interest detection. Then we present the error analysis caused by image variation in terms of image size and head pose, To verify the efficiency of the system proposed in this paper, several experiments are conducted using about 173 korean's left side facial photographs. Experiment results shows that the accuracy of our system is increased 17,99% after we combine the front face features with the side face features, instead of using the front face features only.

Review of osteochondroma: involved in temporomandibular joint (측두하악관절에 발생한 골연골종에 대한 고찰)

  • Osteochondroma is the most common benign bone tumor. The majority of osteochondromas (85%) present as solitary, nonhereditary lesions. In general, osteochondroma has no symptoms,however, facial asymmetry, malocclusion, crossbite and mouth opening can be occurred in case of temporomandibular joint involved. Radiologic analyses are indispensable element to diagnose osteochondroma and pathogenetic analysis showed that hereditary multiple osteochondromas are caused by mutations in either of two genes: exostosis(multiple)-1 (EXT1), which is located on chromosome 8q24.11 - q24.13 or exostosis(multiple)-2 (EXT2), which is located on chromosome 11p11 - 12. Recently, reduced mRNA of EXT1 was described in nonhereditary osteochondromas. The treatment of choice for osteochondroma is surgical unless the skeleton is still immature. Surgery associated with orthodontic treatment can be a valid approach to minimize facial asymmetry and malocclusion in case of temporomandibular with osteochondroma.

A Face Recognition System using Eigenfaces: Performance Analysis (고유얼굴을 이용한 얼굴 인식 시스템: 성능분석)

  • This paper analyzes the performance of a face recognition algorithm using the eigenfaces method. In the absence of robust personal recognition schemes, a biometric recognition system has essentially researched to improve their shortcomings. A face recognition system in biometries is widely researched in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition, since it is possible to comprehend intuitively our faces. The proposed system projects facial images onto a feature space that effectively expresses the significant variations among known facial images. The significant features are known as 'eigenfaces', because they are the eigenvectors(principal components) of the set of faces. The projection operation characterizes an individual face by a weighted sum of the eigenface features, and to recognize a particular face it is necessary only to compare these weights to those of known individuals. In order to analyze the performance of the system, we develop a face recognition system by using Harvard database in Harvard Robotics Laboratory. We present the recognition rate according to variations on the lighting condition, numbers of the employed eigenfaces, and existence of a pre-processing step. Finally, we construct a rejection curve in order to investigate the practicability of the recognition method using the eigenfaces.

  • This study aims to discuss the type and characteristics of primitivism in the modern fashion of the $21^{st}$ century and, as a research method, the concept of primitivism as well as the transition of the patterns of primitivism expressed in modern art have been considered and reviewed through a variety of references. In particular, an empirical analysis of the works that have been created from 2000 to 2009 has been performed using domestic and overseas fashion and collection magazines. The characteristics of primitivism in modern fashion possess the following types of expression: First, Sensuality can be cited as one of the characteristics, either by using direct or indirect exposure of the human body, a silhouette which fits tightly to the body, or creating the effect of sensual beauty using animal fur or bird feathers. Second, Incantation: Masks symbolizing primitive incantation are used to cover the human face or primitive incantation is incorporated as a theme of hair accessories or fashion trinkets, etc. In addition, such decorations as tattoos and the body colorations of ancient tribes are reproduced in modern fashion by means of body painting, printing or other accessories, emphasizing the image of occult primitiveness. Third, Naturalness can be cited as one of the characteristics. Naturalness is emphasized in modern fashion not through artificial decorations and processing, but rather through different patterns of exposure by which natural purity can be felt or through the use of non-artificial materials which recalls primitive civilization. Forth, Playfulness is expressed in the form of graffiti or abstract letters and paintings, and the character of the play is often expressed by the use of grotesque images based on various distortions and exaggerations of the human body, the utilization of symbols of primitive incantation and body and/or facial painting. Fifth, Lastly 'folkishness is emphasized. Folk-like objects, facial decorations, exposure of the body and intense color contrasts typically represent the folkish characteristics.

Anonymity of Medical Brain Images (의료 두뇌영상의 익명성)

  • The current defacing method for keeping an anonymity of brain images damages the integrity of a precise brain analysis due to over removal, although it maintains the patients' privacy. A novel method has been developed to create an anonymous face model while keeping the voxel values of an image exactly the same as that of the original one. The method contains two steps: construction of a mockup brain template from ten normalized brain images and a substitution of the mockup brain to the brain image. A level set segmentation algorithm is applied to segment a scalp-skull apart from the whole brain volume. The segmented mockup brain is coregistered and normalized to the subject brain image to create an anonymous face model. The validity of this modification is tested through comparing the intensity of voxels inside a brain area from the mockup brain with the original brain image. The result shows that the intensity of voxels inside from the mockup brain is same as ones from an original brain image, while its anonymity is guaranteed.

Surgical approach and orthodontic treatment of mandibular condylar osteochondroma

  • Osteochondroma is a common benign tumor of bones, but it is rare in the mandibular condyle. With its outgrowth it manifests clinically as deviation of the mandible limitation of mouth opening, and facial asymmetry. After the tumor is diagnosed on the basis of clinical symptoms and radiographic examination including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis, an appropriate surgery and treatment plan should be formulated. Herein, we present the case of a 44-year-old female patient who visited our dental hospital because her chin point had been deviating to the left side slowly but progressively over the last 3 years and she had difficulty masticating. Based on CBCT, she was diagnosed with skeletal Class III malocclusion accompanied by osteochondroma of the right mandibular condyle. Maxillary occlusal cant with the right side down was observed, but it was confirmed to be an extrusion of the molars associated with dental compensation. Therefore, after intrusion of the right molars with the use of temporary anchorage devices, sagittal split ramus osteotomy was used to remove the tumor and perform orthognathic surgery simultaneously. During 6 months after the surgery, continuous bone resorption and remodeling were observed in the condyle of the affected side, which led to a change in occlusion. During the postoperative orthodontic treatment, intrusive force and buccal torque were applied to the molars on the affected side, and a proper buccal overjet was created. After 18 months, CBCT revealed that the rate of bone absorption was continuously reduced, bone corticalization appeared, and good occlusion and a satisfying facial profile were achieved.

A Study on the Face Image to Color of Make-up (색채 메이크업에 의한 얼굴이미지 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to study face images according to color of make-up was made by computer graphic simulation. The various facial images can be helpful for choosing suitable make-up color planning. In order to find out the differences of face images by make-up color, three different foundations and seven eye-shadows, six lips were applied on the round face model. Make-up Image Scale was used the scale of seven point modified the S-D method. Data were analyzed by Varimax perpendicular rotation method, Duncan's Multiple Range Test, Three-way ANOVA. As the result of make-up image perception analysis, a factor structure was divided into mildness, modernness, elegance, unique. The factor of mildness, modernness, unique affected on the foundation color. Foundation color was found out to be influential variable to distinguish color perception abilities. Also, the foundation, eye-shadow, lip color were influenced interactively on the perception of elegance factor. Pink color was important color, influenced on the mildness factor. Gray and purple color were influenced on the modernness factor. Mildness factor was perceived as the most bright foundation but unique factor was perceived as the most dark foundation. Then, the foundation, eye-shadow, lip color were influenced interactively on the perception of facial images. The results can be effectively applied to today's marketing and color design management which is focused on the product's emotional image in customer's mind.
