  • Face tracking is to estimate the motion of a non-rigid face together with a rigid head in 3D, and plays important roles in higher levels such as face/facial expression/emotion recognition. In this paper, we propose an AAM-based face tracking algorithm. AAM has been widely used to segment and track deformable objects, but there are still many difficulties. Particularly, it often tends to diverge or converge into local minima when a target object is self-occluded, partially or completely occluded. To address this problem, we utilize the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT). SIFT is an effective method for self and partial occlusion because it is able to find correspondence between feature points under partial loss. And it enables an AAM to continue to track without re-initialization in complete occlusions thanks to the good performance of global matching. We also register and use the SIFT features extracted from multi-view face images during tracking to effectively track a face across large pose changes. Our proposed algorithm is validated by comparing other algorithms under the above 3 kinds of occlusions.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new LDP code to solve a previous LDP code's problem and can include a face-color information. To include the face-color information, we developed various methods reducing the existing LDP code and analyzed the results. A new LDP code is represented by 6-bits different from the previous LDP code To adapt to a noise and environmental changes effectively and include 2-bits face-color information. The result shows better recognition rates of face and facial-expression than the existing methods effectively.

  • Face classification has wide applications in security and surveillance. However, this technique presents various challenges caused by pose, illumination, and expression changes. Face recognition with long-distance images involves additional challenges, owing to focusing problems and motion blurring. Multiple frames under varying spatial or temporal settings can acquire additional information, which can be used to achieve improved classification performance. This study investigates the effectiveness of multi-frame decision-level fusion with photon-counting linear discriminant analysis. Multiple frames generate multiple scores for each class. The fusion process comprises three stages: score normalization, score validation, and score combination. Candidate scores are selected during the score validation process, after the scores are normalized. The score validation process removes bad scores that can degrade the final output. The selected candidate scores are combined using one of the following fusion rules: maximum, averaging, and majority voting. Degraded facial images are employed to demonstrate the robustness of multi-frame decision-level fusion in harsh environments. Out-of-focus and motion blurring point-spread functions are applied to the test images, to simulate long-distance acquisition. Experimental results with three facial data sets indicate the efficiency of the proposed decision-level fusion scheme.

  • Intelligent human identification using face information has been the research hotspot ranging from Internet of Things (IoT) application, intelligent self-service bank, intelligent surveillance to public safety and intelligent access control. Since 2D face images are usually captured from a long distance in an unconstrained environment, to fully exploit this advantage and make human recognition appropriate for wider intelligent applications with higher security and convenience, the key difficulties here include gray scale change caused by illumination variance, occlusion caused by glasses, hair or scarf, self-occlusion and deformation caused by pose or expression variation. To conquer these, many solutions have been proposed. However, most of them only improve recognition performance under one influence factor, which still cannot meet the real face recognition scenario. In this paper we propose a multi-scale parallel convolutional neural network architecture to extract deep robust facial features with high discriminative ability. Abundant experiments are conducted on CMU-PIE, extended FERET and AR database. And the experiment results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits excellent discriminative ability compared with other existing algorithms.

  • Realistic facial animation research field which communicates with human and computer using face has increased recently. The human face is the part of the body we use to recognize individuals and the important communication channel that understand the inner states like emotion. To provide the intelligent interface. computer facial animation looks like human in talking and expressing himself. Facial modeling and animation research is focused on realistic facial animation recently. In this article, we suggest the method of facial modeling and animation for realistic facial synthesis. We can make a 3D facial model for arbitrary face by using generic facial model. For more correct and real face, we make the Korean Generic Facial Model. We can also manipulate facial synthesis based on the physical characteristics of real facial muscle and skin. Many application will be developed such as teleconferencing, education, movies etc.

  • The human face has "expression" as an important visual factor in contrast with general objects. For this reason, cartoonists draw shadow that emphasizes facial shape and facial expression in order to convey atmosphere of scene and trait of character. This shadow should be considered when doing cartoon rendering for facial expression although it is not an physical shading. This paper proposes a cartoon rendering system for facial expression based on shading techniques of real cartoonist. First of all, we searched such techniques of cartoonist through variety of collected cartoon images and defined shadow templates according to character's facial expression to do cartoon rendering diffently. After that, we demonstrated cartoon rendering system of facial expression on the basis of survey result that effectively emphasizes facial shape and facial expression. Finally, we showed the usefulness through the user questionnaire.
