  • In Japanese steel fabricators, significant time is devoted to drafting fabrication drawings compared to the fabrication process itself, highlighting a need for efficiency improvements. A primary issue is the inadequate consideration of constructability at the design stage. Steel fabricators often sign contracts based on partially completed designs, leading to frequent modifications from the creation of fabrication drawings up until just before fabrication begins, which hampers productivity improvements. To address this challenge, this study proposes separating and contracting engineering from fabrication early in the design phase through front-loading detailed design. If front-loading is feasible, it could reduce the frequency of changes and corrections, improving the drawing process and potentially enhancing efficiency in steel fabricators. Furthermore, the study explores what constitutes feasible engineering for front-loading, considering that steel fabrication involves aspects beyond mere structural design.

  • After the 'Guidelines for the preservation of digital heritage' were published by UNESCO, interests in the fabrication of digital cultural heritage have been increasing throughout the world. The present study was intended to fabricate digital cultural heritages for existing cultural properties using the reverse engineering technology and obtain two-dimensional drawings. Jinju Castle Gongbukmun, which is a cultural property, was selected as a study subject and 3D modeling of Jinju Castle Gongbukmun was conducted by implementing 3D scanning and processing the point cloud data. Using the Gongbukmun 3D model (3D-Gongbukmun) made as such, requirements as a digital heritage were reviewed and 2D drawings of Gongbukmun such as front views, ground plans, and side views could be prepared.

  • Extraction of fabrication documents is very important because it provides information related to tasks of fabrication and construction. Therefore, in the case of a prefabricated member such as a steel structure, it is necessary to improve the productivity of fabrication documents through 3D BIM. However, research and evidence data on direct comparison analysis of 3D BIM-based documents extraction versus 2D CAD-based documents extraction are hard to find. Thus, this study focuses on productivity analysis of 3D BIM based fabrication documents extraction. In this study, the productivity data of fabrication documents extraction for module construction of EPC project was analyzed. For the productivity analysis, a case study on the fabrication documents of Module A (1,965 sheets) and Module B (1,216 sheets) was conducted. Fabrication documents for each module include general arrangement drawing, assembly drawing, single part drawing and single plate drawing. Comparison of 2D CAD based fabrication documents extraction and 3D BIM based fabrication documents extraction, the productivity for the entire work was improved from 17 hours to 16 hours for Module A and 12 hours to 7 hours for Module B. Especially, the productivity of the assembly drawings, which occupies a large part of the fabrication documents, was improved by about 48.75% from the total time required from 281 hours to 144 hours.

  • With the rise in CPU power and the generalization and popularity of computers, engineering practice also changed from hand calculations to 3D computer models, from elastic linear analysis to 3D nonlinear static analysis and 3D nonlinear transient dynamic analysis. Thanks to holistic design approach and current trends in freeform and contemporary architecture, BIM concept is no longer a dream but also a reality. BIM is not just providing a media for better co-ordination but also to shorten the round-the-clock time in updating models to match with other professional disciplines. With the parametric modeling tools, structural information is also linked with BIM system and quickly produces analysis and design results from checking to fabrication. This paper presents a new framework which not just linked the BIM system by means of parametric mean but also create and produce connection FE model and fabrication drawings etc. This framework will facilitate structural engineers to produce well co-ordinate, optimized and safe structures.

  • This study aims to present a method for reducing human error, time spent on design, and waste of design manpower when designing plant pipe hanger & support using sketches based on piping and steel structure drawings in plant. The method involves organizing the pipe hanger & support design process based on codes and standards and developing a program to facilitate this. The design of whole plant systems, including pipe hangers & supports, is conducted within 3D plant CAD software that applies BIM (Building Information Modeling). All attribute information of the pipe hanger & support is digitized as a digital asset, and the design is executed as an add-in module. This module is then used for BOM(generating Bill of Materials) and installation drawings, which are essential for the fabrication and on-site installation of pipe hangers & supports.

  • BIM libraries for architectural projects have been developed and distributed. However, they do not define physical and logical quality control methods for individual library objects, so there are some difficulties in securing reliability of 3D library models converted from 2D drawings. Because the BIM library contents can be built by participating material and member-fabrication companies, after making individual BIM library objects, a certification process through separate quality verification is very important when delivering as-built BIM libraries. Since the BIM library should have generality for usage, it is necessary to secure the quality of BIM library objects according to consistent verification standards. Therefore, this study suggests a quality verification method for certifying a BIM library object from physical and data perspectives by comparing existing 2D drawings in the BIM libraries built based on standardized 2D drawings from MOLIT. This method could be widely used for quality verification in delivering BIM libraries by companies in the construction sector and operated with rule set data for quality verification of as-built BIM models.

  • 3D bridge information models for a concrete box-girder bridge were built and a typical application example for the estimation linked with the 3D models was proposed. 3D geometry objects with PBS (product breakdown structure) were constructed using standard classification codes and 2D drawings. Information on the amount of materials according to the classification codes was utilized for the estimation system. A process for the estimation of concrete and rebars was developed and verified through the pilot test. Optimization of rebar fabrication was suggested as an additional function and was utilized for the cost reduction and standard fabrication.

  • The inner and outer car panels for bonnet, door, and trunk lid are assembled by hemming rather than welding. To achieve successful fabrication of these panels, the complicated timing chart of hemming units for pre-and main hemming stages should be made to optimal one. In this study, a design system for automatic timing chart generation is developed. Using AutoCAD VBA and EXCEL data chart, hemming die design parameters and guidelines were put into the program to give hemming unit drawings and consequent timing charts. Then the prepared timing charts were checked and modified. The effectiveness of the system is verified by applying it successfully to hemming unit design for bonnet panel joining.

  • These brief studies and reports of the use of exposed aggrigate precast concrete in practice are combined with a description of some notable co-ordination such as shop drawing, manufacturing and erection in the field construction. Above mentioned exposed aggrigate P. C. means architectural P. C. which was used to the VOTRAKON site in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fabricated P. C. on the site without autoclaving and steam curing plant had been successfully carried out on this project-core building, conference room and others. The project designed by HOPE/VTN international INC. which is located in San Diego, California U.S.A. stands for vocational training and related support facilities contract. We had to submit shop drawings showing complete information for fabrication and installation of P. C. unit reinforcement. Also we should be indicated member dimension and cross section, location size and type of necessary for erection. We can delineate the following characteristic results. One of the most important things how to handle exposed aggrigate P.C. unit as specified was quality assurance and co-ordination for shop drawing, manufacturing and erection.
