  • Varieties of research on turbulent-induced noise is conducted with combinations of acoustic analogy methods and computational fluid dynamic methods to analyze efficiently and accurately. Application of FW-H acoustic analogy without turbulent noise is the most popular method due to its calculation cost. In this paper, turbulent-induced noise is predicted using RANS turbulence model and permeable FW-H method. For simplicity, noise from 2D cylinder is examined using three different methods, direct method of RANS, FW-H method without turbulent noise and permeable FW-H method which can take into account of turbulent-induced noise. Turbulent noise was well predicted using permeable FW-H method with same computational cost of original FW-H method. Also, ability of permeable FW-H method to predict highly accurate turbulent-induced noise by applying adequate permeable surface is presented. The procedure to predict turbulent-induced noise using permeable FW-H is established and its usability is shown.

  • This paper presents the numerical prediction of sound generated by viscous flow past a circular cylinder. The two dimensional flow field is predicted using FEM based Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver, and the calculated unsteady fluid field values are utilized by an acoustic code that implements Ffowcs Willianms-Hawkings(FW-H) equation. The integration surface used in acoustic analysis is extended from the cylinder surface to permeable surfaces. The 2D based CFD calculations overpredict the acoustic amplitude, however, if adequate correlation length is used, the predicted acoustic amplitude agrees well with experiment. The predictions using extended integral surface in FW-H equation show results that contain the characteristics of quadrupole - volume integration - noise term, and do not vary seriously with the integral surface location.

  • Organic wastes such as food waste (FW), livestock wastewater (LW), and sewage sludge (SWS) can produce hydrogen ($H_2$) by anaerobic acid fermentation. Expecially, FW which has high carbohydrate content produces $H_2$ and short chain fatty acids by indigenous $H_2$ producing microorganisms without adding inoculum, however $H_2$ production rate (HPR) and yield have to be improved to use a commercially available technology. In this study, LW was mixed to FW in different ratios (on chemical oxygen demand (COD) basis) as an auxiliary substrate. The mixture of FW and LW was pretreated at pH 2 using 6 N HCl for 12 h and then fermented at $37^{\circ}C$ for 28 h. HPR of FW, 254 mL $H_2/L/h$, was increased with the addition of LW, however, mixing ratio of LW to FW was reversely related to HPR, exhibiting HPR of 737, 733, 599, and 389 mL $H_2/L/h$ at the ratio of FW:LW=10:1, 10:2, 10:3, and 10:4 on COD basis, respectively. Maximum HPR and $H_2$ production yield of 737 $H_2/L/h$ and 1.74 mol $H_2/mol$ hexoseadded were obtained respectively at the ratio of FW:LW=10:1. Butyrate was the main organic acid produced and propionate was not detected throughout the experiment.

  • Among underwater noise sources around submerged bodies, turbulence-induced noise has not been well investigated because of the difficulty of predicting it. In computational aeroacoustics, a number of studies has been conducted using the Ffowcs Williamse-Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy without consideration of quadrupole source term due to the unacceptable calculation cost. In this paper, turbulence-induced noise is predicted, including that due to quadrupole sources, using a large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence model and a developed formulation of permeable FW-H method with an open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool-kit. Noise around a circular cylinder is examined and the results of using the acoustic analogy method with and without quadrupole noise are compared, i.e. the FW-H method without quadrupole noise versus the permeable FW-H method that includes quadrupole sources. The usability of the permeable FW-H method for the prediction of turbulence-noise around submerged bodies is shown.

  • The latest research has shown that the turbulence-induced noise is important in total characteristics of flow noise. Also, turbulence-induced noise have a significant influence for performance of sonar dome. In this paper, Flow analysis is performed on vicinity of the sonar dome model using Large Eddy Simulation method. Also, direct method that extracts perturbational sound pressure, FW-H method without turbulence-induced noise and permeable FW-H method that is able to calculate turbulence- induced noise were compared in order to show turbulence effect.

  • In most industry fields concerning external flow noise problems, the hybrid computational aeroacoustic techniques based on the FW-H (Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings) equation are widely used for its numerical efficiency. However, when the surface integral form of FW-H equation is used without volume quadrupole sources, it is known to generate significant non-physical noise in a certain case. Especially, in the case of a flow in which the tip vortex cavitation is formed in the distant downstream direction such as flow driven by an underwater propeller, the accuracy in noise prediction becomes poor unless it is not properly modelled. Therefore, in this study, the nonphysical acoustic waves caused by the surface integral form of FW-H equation is reduced by adding the quadrupole correction term. First, to verify the accuracy of the in-house code of FW-H equation, the noise by an axial fan used in the outdoor unit of air conditioner was calculated and compared with the results of ANSYS Fluent. In order to verify the effects of the quadrupole correction term, the noise prediction for isentropic vortex convection is performed and it is confirmed that the error is reduced by the quadrupole correction term. Finally, the noise prediction is performed for the flow field generated by the Clark-Y hydrofoil in underwater. It is confirmed that the error caused by the cavitation passing through the integral surface can be reduced by the quadrupole correction term.

  • Anaerobic fermentation of food waste (FW) and waste activated sludge (WAS) for hydrogen production was performed in CSTR (Continuous Stirred tank reactor) under various HRTs and volumetric mixing ratio (V/V) of two substrates, FW and WAS. The specific hydrogen production potential of FW was higher than that of WAS. However, pH drop in the CSTR for hydrogen production from FW was higher than that from WAS. The maintenance of desired pH during fermentative hydrogen production is regarded as the most important operation parameter for the stable hydrogen production. Therefore, when the potential of hydrogen production from FW and better buffer capacity of WAS, the proper mixture of FW and WAS for fermentative hydrogen production were considered as a useful complementary substrate. The maximum yield of specific hydrogen production, 140 mL/g VSS, was found at HRT of 2 day and the volumetric mixing ratio of 20:80 (WAS : FW). The spatial distribution of hydrogen producing bacteria was observed in anaerobic fermentative reactor using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method.

  • In this paper, aerodynamic noise simulation was conducted using DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) and FW-H (Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings) acoustic analogy for the tandem cylinders which have configuration similar to a landing gear of airplanes. Numerical simulation for the tandem cylinders whose centers are 3.7D apart was carried out and results were compared with the measured data such as flow characteristics, pressure coefficients on the cylinder surfaces and far-field noise characteristics. It was confirmed that periodically shedded vortices released at the upstream cylinder and impinged on the downstream cylinder surface are major sources of aerodynamic noise. After verifying the computational method of using DES and FW-H acoustic analogy for predicting aerodynamic noise of tandem cylinders, additional simulation was conducted to examine the effect of attaching a splitter plate at the rear of the upstream cylinder. It was confirmed that the noise level in specific frequency band decreased significantly because the splitter plate changed the vortex shedding features and reduced dipole noise source.

  • Comparison of fish number on routine oxygen consumption (OC) of black porgy (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) reared in seawater (SW) versus freshwater (FW) was performed in closed water-recirculating system containing respiratory chamber. Fish acclimated in separate indoor tanks with SW or FW were sampled as two groups (one or three of fish used, $mean\;{\pm}\;S.D.=36.4{\pm}9.8$). OC of fish reared in both SW and FW showed clear temporal rhythms, with higher values in the daytime and lower values at night, in accordance with light (09:00-21:00 h) and dark (21:00-09:00 h) phases of the diel cycle (12L:12D). The OC of the fish increased linearly with the water temperature. The OCs of black porgy reared in SW and FW at 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$ were 140.0, 174.8, 282.3 mg $O^2{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ and 177.5, 307.8, 413.1 mg $O^2{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ for the one of fish used, and 200.5, 274.7, 339.1 mg $O^2{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ and 118.2, 188.2, 252.8 mg $O^2{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ for three of fish used, respectively. Black porgy reared in SW had higher ventilation rates than those in FW. These results indicate that black porgy reared in FW had higher OC than those in SW at the one of fish used, but the fish reared in SW had higher OC than those in FW at the three of fish used.

  • In this paper, a series of experiment is performed for a scaled hovering rotor in a semi-anechoic chamber and the results are compared to the noise spectra predicted by using Lowson's loading noise equation and FW-H equation. It was founded that the sound directivity pattern for both experiments and predictions are similar in their trend. Meanwhile the FW-H equation showed better agreement with experiments in the near-field noise spectra, but at the far-field the Lowson's equation performed better. The discrete noise are known to be proportional to the loading on the blades, which can be controlled by collective pitch angle of the blades. It was founded that the predicted spectra with FW-H equation come close to the measured noise spectra in low collective pitch, but in high collective pitch angles the Lowson's equation be more reliable.
