  • In this paper, we propose VLSI architectures for the full search block matching algorithm (FS BMA) and two-stage BMA using integral projections that reduce greatly computational complexity with its performance comparable to that of the FS BMA. The proposed VLSI architectures are faster than the conventional ones with lower hardware complexity. Also the proposed architectures of the FS BMA and two-stage BMA are modeled in VHDL and simulated to show their functional validity.

  • In this paper we investigate the hardware implementation of block matching algorithms (BMAs) for moving sequences. Using systolic arrays we propose a hardware architecture of a two-stage BMA using integral projections which reduces greatly computational complexity with its performance comparable to that of the full search (FS). Proposed hardware architecture is faster than hardware architecture of the FS by 2~15 times. For realization of the FS and two stage BMA modeling and simulation results using SPW and VHDL are also shown.

  • In this paper, we propose a multi-level block matching algorithm using motion information in blocks. In the proposed algorithm, the block-level is decided by the motion degree in the block before motion searching procedure, and then adequate motion searching performs according to the block-level. This improves computational efficiency by eliminating the unnecessary searching Process in no motion or low motion regions, and brings more accurate estimation results by deepening motion searching Process in high motion regions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm brings the lower estimation error about 20% MSE reduction with the fewer blocks pet frame and the operation number was reduced to 56% compared to TSSA and 98% compared to FS -BMA with constant block size.

  • As the search range increases, most fast ME algorithms can not keep the performance comparable to the full search BMA. In this paper, we propose a new fast motion estimation method which locates the small search area for a block of the current frame. This method is based on interframe correlation of motion vectors as well as intraframe correlation. Especially, the proposed algorithm outperforms other fast methods when the motion is very fast or complex. It drastically reduces computational complexity while maintaining good performance compared with the conventional FS-BMA.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast variable block matching algorithm for motion estimation based on bit-patterns. Motion estimation in the proposed algorithm is peformed after the representation of image sequence is transformed 8-bit pixel values into 1-bit ones by the mean pixel value of search block, which brings a short searching time by reducing the computational complexity. Moreover, adaptive searching methods according to the motion information of the block make the procedure of motion estimation efficient by eliminating unnecessary searching processes of low motion block and deepening a searching procedure in high motion block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides bettor performance - average 0.5dB PSNR improvement and about 99% savings in the number of operations - than full search Hock matching algorithm with a fixed block size.

  • Motion estimation using Full-Search(FS) and Block-Matching Algorithm(BMA) is often used in the case of moving object tracking by vision sensors. However these methods often miss the real-time vision data because these schemes suffer the heavy computational load. When the image size of moving object is changed in an image frame according to the distance between the camera of mobile robot and the moving object, the tracking performance of a moving object may decline with these methods because of the shortage of active handling. In this paper, the variable-representative block that can reduce a lot of data computations, is defined and optimized by changing the size of representative block accor...

  • The Motion Estimation (ME) process is an important part of a video encoding systems since they can significantly reduce bitrate with keeping the output quality of an encoded sequence. Unfortunately this process may dominate the encoding time using straightforward full search algorithm (FS). Up to now, many fast algorithms can reduce the computation complexity by limiting the number of searching locations. This is accomplished at the expense of less accuracy of motion estimation. In this paper, we introduce a new fast motion estimation method based on the spatio-temporal correlation of adjacent blocks. A reliable predicted motion vector (RPMV) is defined. The reliability of RPMV is shown on the basis of motion vectors achieved by FS. The scalar and the direction of RPMV are used in our proposed scheme. The experimental results show that the proposed method Is about l1~14% faster than the nearest neighbor method which is a wellknown conventional fast scheme.

  • Recently we need a faster and more accurate motion vector search algorithm for ASIC(Application Specific IC) or small systems. Block motion estimation using Full Search(FS) algorithm provides the best visual quality and PSNR, but it requires intensive computations. The previously proposed fast algorithms reduced the number of computations by limiting the number of searching locations. This is accomplished at the expense of less accuracy of motion estimation and gives rise to an appreciably higher SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) for motion compensated images. In this paper we exploit the spatial correlation of motion vectors and present a fast motion estimation scheme which uses the predicted motion vector(PMV). The PMV scheme is more clear and simpler than the previously proposed algorithms which also use adjacent motion vectors. Simulation results with standard video sequences show that the PMV scheme is faster and more accurate than other algorithms such as Nearest-Neighbors Search(NNS) algorithm.

  • Motion Estimation is an essential module in video encoders based on international standards such as H.263 and MPEG. Many fast motion estimation algorithms have been proposed in order to reduce the computational complexity of a well-known full search algorithms(FS). However, these fast algorithms can not work efficiently in DSP processors recently developed for video processing. To solve for this. we propose an efficient motion estimation scheme optimized in the DSP processor like Philips TM1300. A motion vector predictor is pre-estimated and a small search range is chosen in the proposed scheme using strong motion vector correlation between a current macro block (MB) and its neighboring MB's to reduce computation time. An MPEG-4 SP@L3(Simple Profile at Level 3) encoding system is implemented in Philips TM1300 to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. In that processor, we can achieve better performance using our method than other conventional ones while keeping visual quality as good as that of the FS.
