  • We perform an experimental study of concrete beam with pultruded fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) plank using as a permanent formwork and the tensile reinforcement. A satisfactory bond at the interface between the smooth surface of the pultruded plank and the concrete must be developed for the FRP plank and the concrete to act as a composite structural member. Two kinds of aggregate were bonded to the FRP plank using a commercially available epoxy. No additional flexural or shear reinforcement was provided in the beams. For comparison we test two types of control specimen. One control did not have any aggregate bonded to the FRP plank and the other control had infernal steel reinforcing bars instead of the FRP plank. The beams were loaded by central patch load to their ultimate capacity. The experimental results were compared to current ACI 318 (2005) and ACI 440 (2006) code predictions. This study demonstrates that the FRP plank has the potential to serve as formwork and reinforcing for concrete structures.

  • An experimental study of composite beam with perforated fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) plank as a permanent formwork and the tensile reinforcement was performed. A combined formwork and reinforcement system can facilitate rapid construction of concrete members since no conventional formwork is needed, which requires time consuming assembly and dismantling. In order for a smooth FRP plank to act compositely with the concrete, the surface of the FRP needs to be treated to increase its bond properties. Aggregates were bonded to the FRP plank using a commercially available epoxy and perforated web of plank. No additional flexural or shear reinforcement was provided in the beams. For comparison, two control specimens were tested. One control had no perforated hole in the web of FRP plank and the other had internal steel reinforcing bars instead of the FRP plank. The beams were loaded by central patch load to their ultimate capacity. This study demonstrates that the perforated FRP plank has the potential to serve as a permanent formwork and reinforcing for concrete beam.

  • The use of hybrid FRP-concrete structures with a dual purpose of both permanent formwork and reinforcement, has been considered in some studies recently. For the FRP plank and the concrete to act as a composite structural member a satisfactory bond at the interface between the smooth surface of the pultruded plank and the cast-in-place concrete must be developed. Sand was bonded to the pultruded FRP plank using a commercially available epoxy system. In applying general analysis techniques to evaluate the performance of composite structures with FRP stay-in-place forming, it is essential that characteristics of the bond stress-slip relation be identified. In this study I would like to propose a simplified bilinear bond stress-slip model for FRP composite structures.

  • An experimental study for bond slip behavior of concrete and a FRP plank was used as the both formwork and the tensile reinforcement for a concrete structural member is described. For the FRP plank and the concrete to act as a composite structural member a satisfactory bond at the interface between the smooth surface of the FRP and the concrete must be developed. This study focuses on investigation of the bond slip behavior of sand coated interface between FRP and cast-in-place concrete experimentally.

  • DFRCC (ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites), which are a significantly improved ductile material compared to conventional concrete, were evaluated as a new construction material with a high potential applications to concrete structures for a range of purposes. In this study, experiments on the failure behavior of composite beams with a DFRCC and FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) plank with a rib used as permanent formwork and tensile reinforcement were carried out. A normal concrete and a fiber reinforced concrete with PVA series of RF4000 and the PP series of PP-macro were used for comparison, and each RF4000+RSC15 and PP-macro+RSC15 was tested by producing composite beams. The experimental results of the FRP plank without a sand coating showed that sliding failure mode between the FRP plank and concrete started from a flexural crack at the beam center; therefore it is necessary for the FRP plank to be coated with sand and the effect of the fiber to failure mode did not appear to be huge. The experiment of the FRP plank with a sand coating showed that both 1200mm and 2000mm allowed sufficient bonding between the concrete and FRP plank. The maximum load of the fiber reinforced concrete was higher than that of normal concrete and the case which a series of PP fiber was mixed showed the highest value. The crack latency caused by the fibers led to composite action with a FRP rib.

  • Development of new concrete bridge deck system with FRP plank using as a permanent formwork and the main tensile reinforcement recently has been actively conducted. Concurrent use as a reinforcing material and a permanent formwork, it is possible to reduce the construction time and construction costs than the usual concrete slab. In this study, an experiment was carried out for the bond stress between cast-in-place concrete and the type of FRP plank using as a permanent formwork. The interfacial fracture energy that can be one of the most important parameters were evaluated for adhesion performance and bond stress to know the characteristics of the failure mechanism of the adhesion surface. Interfacial fracture energy of normal concrete is 0.24kN/m of GF11 case, in the case of GF21, 0.43kN/m appears, in the case of CF11 and GF31, 0.44kN/m and 0.46kN/m respectively it appeared. In case of RFCON, 0.52kN/m appears from GF12, the CF12 and GF22, 0.51kN/m and 0.36kN/m appeared each case.

  • Bond stress between cast-in-place ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites and CFRP plank were experimentally analyzed. As failure shape, the mixture of failure between CFRP plank and epoxy, and failure between concrete and epoxy was shown. In case of RFCON from the suggested simple bond slip relationship, the maximum average bond stress was 5.39MPa, the initial slope was 104.09MPa/mm, and the total slip length was 0.19mm. PPCON showed the maximum average bond stress of 4.31MPa, the initial slope of 126.67MPa/mm, and the total slip length of 0.26mm, while RFCON+ appeared to have 8.71MPa, 137.69MPa/mm, 0.16mm. PPCON+ had 6.19MPa maximum average bond stress, 121.56MPa/mm initial slope, and 0.34mm total slip length. To comprehend the behavior of composite structure of FRP and concrete, local bond slip relation is necessary, and thus a simple relation is suggested to be easily applied on hybrid composite system.

  • In recent years, the use of hybrid fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)-concrete members with a dual purpose of both formwork and reinforcement, has been considered in some structures and has been applied in a small number of bridge decks. Numerical simulations of the beam failure tests were performed using nonlinear finite element program and a parametric study was performed with variables of perfobond shape. The ultimate strength was increased with perfobond shape because of dowel action. It was showed a good performance in case of approximately perforate diameter 25~35mm in this case.

  • In order to study ultimate flexure behavior of FRP-concrete composite structures which can replace reinforced concrete structures, ABAQUS, a general purpose analysis program, was utilized for numerical nonlinear analysis of structural performance and behavior characteristics of FRP-concrete composite beams. Explicit nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted and the numerical results were compared with previous experiments. Concrete damaged plasticity model was adopted as material properties of concrete and Euro code was used as compressive stress state. Nonlinear analysis was performed for four different types of FRP-concrete composite beams, and ultimate load and cracking pattern was compared and analyzed. The model suggested in this research was able to simulate ultimate load and cracking pattern properly, it is expected to be utilized in study of precise structural and behavioral characteristics of various FRP-concrete composite structures.
