  • Three series of 36 short square columns confined by wraps, full shells and partial shells were tested by varying the thickness of GFRP laminates. An assessment of the effectiveness of the existing model on confinement of concrete columns with FRP was made. Test results indicated moderate increases in strength, but significantly enhanced deformability compared with those in unconfined concrete, particularly the warp and full shell confinement.

  • DFRCC (ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites), which are a significantly improved ductile material compared to conventional concrete, were evaluated as a new construction material with a high potential applications to concrete structures for a range of purposes. In this study, experiments on the failure behavior of composite beams with a DFRCC and FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) plank with a rib used as permanent formwork and tensile reinforcement were carried out. A normal concrete and a fiber reinforced concrete with PVA series of RF4000 and the PP series of PP-macro were used for comparison, and each RF4000+RSC15 and PP-macro+RSC15 was tested by producing composite beams. The experimental results of the FRP plank without a sand coating showed that sliding failure mode between the FRP plank and concrete started from a flexural crack at the beam center; therefore it is necessary for the FRP plank to be coated with sand and the effect of the fiber to failure mode did not appear to be huge. The experiment of the FRP plank with a sand coating showed that both 1200mm and 2000mm allowed sufficient bonding between the concrete and FRP plank. The maximum load of the fiber reinforced concrete was higher than that of normal concrete and the case which a series of PP fiber was mixed showed the highest value. The crack latency caused by the fibers led to composite action with a FRP rib.

  • Utilization of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been enlarged as a substitution material to the general construction materials having certain long-term problems such as corrosion, etc. However, it could be difficult to apply the FRP material, which has a linear shape generally, to an arch-shaped tunnel structure. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this study to develop a device to form a designed cross section of FRP material by pulling out with a curvature. A sample of the circled FRP product was successfully produced and then the sample has been tested to identify its physical characteristics. Then, intensive feasibility studies on the circled FRP panel to be used for a tunnel lining structure have been carried out by numerical analyses. As a result, it appears that the new circled FRP-concrete composite panel has a high capability to be used for a tunnel lining material without any structural problem.

  • An analytical method capable of predicting various stress-strain responses in axially loaded concrete confined with FRP (fiber reinforced polymers) composites in a rational manner is presented. Its underlying idea is that the volumetric expansion due to progressive microcracking in mechanically loaded concrete is an important measure of the extent of damage in the material microstructure, and can be utilized to estimate the load-carrying capacity of concrete by considering the corresponding accumulated damage. Following from this, an elastic modulus expressed as a function of area strain and concrete porosity, the energy-balance equation relating the dilating concrete to the confining device interactively, the varying confining pressure, and an incremental calculation algorithm are included in the solution procedure. The proposed method enables the evaluation of lateral strains consecutively according to the related mechanical model and the energy-balance equation, rather than using an empirically derived equation for Poisson's ratio or dilation rate as in other analytical methods. Several existing analytical methods that can predict the overall response were also examined and discussed, particularly focusing on the way of considering the volumetric expansion. The results predicted by the proposed and Samaan's bilinear equation models correlated with observed results with a reasonable degree, however it can be judged that the latter is not capable of predicting the response of lateral strains correctly due to incorporating the initial Poisson's ratio and the final converged dilation rate only. Further, the proposed method seems to have greater benefits in other applications by the use of the fundamental principles of mechanics.

  • Utilization of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) material has been increased to solve construction material problems such as corrosion, etc. However, there are still many problems in using a linear-shaped FRP material for a tunnel structure with curved section. In this study, the loading tests were performed on the curved FRP-concrete composite material to evaluate its behavior as tunnel support. These tests were based on the result from preliminary numerical analysis on FRP-concrete composite material. Also, additional numerical analysis considering interface characteristics between FRP and cement-concrete was conducted to compare the result of loading test on FRP-concrete composite material. From the results of the loading test and numerical analysis, the analysis method suggested from this study is reasonable to evaluate the mechanical behavior of FRP-concrete composite material.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer, FRP has a light weight, a high tensile strength based on design, non-electronic, non-magnetic, and rust-resistant feature, etc and many researches are being conducted recently on FRP in the construction area. Among them, GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is excellent in price competitiveness and is widely being used. However, since GFRP has a relative low modulus of elasticity and causes excessive deflection, the section must be large to be used as a structural component and an investigative review must be carried out in design to set the limit for deflection by the use load. Therefore, in order to solve the mentioned technical problems, this study suggested a section of a module form such that application of a large-scale section is possible. Also, to secure the low rigidity of FRP, this study developed a new FRP+ concrete composite girder form that confined the concrete. To identify the structural movement of the developed FRP+ concrete composite girder, shear strength test was carried out.

  • Recently, much research has been conducted on FRP composite to replace steel. However, the concept of FRP girder filled with concrete has not been fully attempted. This study focuses on the analytical behavior of FRP girders filled with concrete. FRP girders usually have large deflection due to relatively low elastic modulus compared to steel members. However, in the previous experimental investigation on small sized modular beams, it has been verified that the displacement of FRP-girder filled with concrete is reduced and the strength is increased considerably. In this research, analytical investigations have conducted to verify the analytical method by comparing the results with tests. In addition, analyses on large girders assembled with small modules have been carried out to predict the feasibility before tests. The analytical results showed that the assembled FRP girders can be used as substitutes for steel girders.

  • In recent years, many efforts have steadily been allocated to develop a new deck system in terms of its materials and structures in order to make up for the shortcomings of reinforced concrete deck. This study implemented and analyzed the verification for concrete composite beam with perfobond FRP as a permanent formwork and the tensile reinforcement, using non-linear finite element analysis program. Approximately 8-15% difference of ultimate failure load between numerical and experimental results were found and showed a similar figure of strain distribution in failure state.

  • This study is a basic experimental research to apply FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) box members to slabs and girders among various architectural structures, which receive bending stress. We prepared prefabricated FRP member and connected it to an FRP box member as a large cross section before we conducted an experiment in diverse conditions to analyze characteristics of compressive fracture behavior. In this study, we carried out a compressive fracture behavior test according to fillers on the upper part of the FRP box member, loading methods, and connective types and thereby performed a finite element analysis. The comparison of analysis results with test results revealed that rigidity was found to be slightly low, while stress was concentrated on the fracture point of the sample.
